Today marks 500 days since I gave up alcohol.
(It's the accomplishment that I’m most proud of.)

2 years ago, many of you wouldn’t have recognized me.

I was stuck in my career.
I drank multiple nights per week.
I was constantly around people, but felt lonely and depressed.

I used to boast about being an “expert drinker.”

Based on Malcom Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule and the idea that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery of a skill…

I WAS an expert. 🙂

In fact, late night partying and alcohol was more than a skill.

It was my entire identity.

My interests were centered around drinking 
(ie watching sports, bar hopping, first dates)

The common denominator of my social circle was socializing with alcohol.

Even my career in Tech Sales benefited from my drinking 
(ie happy hours, sales dinners, conferences)

I believed that my whole life would revolve around drinking, because that is what I knew. 

But what I’ve learned in the past 500 days is that it’s never too late to shift your beliefs, do hard things, and change everything.

And that our dream life is located in the place that we refuse to go.

I came across this article about the 7 types of rest. 

And it made me rethink my sleeping habits completely. 

I consider myself a high-achiever, high-producing individual, with more energy than most. 

But recently, I’ve been hitting the 2pm slump, despite getting 7 hours of sleep each night. 

What I learned in this article, is that sleep is not the end all, be all to produce maximum levels of energy throughout the day. 

There are 7 (yes, 7!) key areas of rest that require equal restoration to perform at your maximum potential. 


1) Physical Rest: There are two types of physical rest, active or passive. Passive physical rest is sleeping or napping, while active physical rest includes activities like yoga, stretching or body work. 


2) Mental Rest: This includes scheduling short breaks throughout the workday as a reminder to sllooowwww dooowwnnnn. Regular mental breaks set you up for better sleep throughout the night. 


3) Sensory Rest: This is a required practice for anyone working on a computer. Bright lights, computer screens and background noises for extended periods of time can rob you of your peace. Intentional moments of sensory deprivation starts to reverse damage from an over-stimulating world.


4) Creative Rest: Transform your workspace to support creativity with  pictures and art that resonate with you. It's unrealistic to devote 40 hours a week in an environment that's empty or cluttered and still hope to ignite passion or spark creativity. 


5) Emotional Rest: This may be the hardest type of rest as it requires courage to be authentic and the vulnerability to freely express yourself. By releasing negative emotions, you create more energy to be spent on things you care about.


6) Social Rest: Where are my extroverts at?! Saying no to social outings that don’t energize you or support your vision is the definition of social rest. Spend your time with people that GIVE you energy, not ones that take it. 


7) Spiritual Rest: My #1 method for spiritual rest is breath work, and meditation is a close second. Spiritual rest requires a deep sense of belonging, love, acceptance and purpose beyond the physical or mental world.

I host networking events centered around childhood games like DuckDuckGoose, Red Light, Green Light and more.

Here are the 3 Lessons I’ve learned about the importance of play for adults.

1) Adults crave physical play.

Nearly everyone that attends my event hasn’t played in this way since childhood and at the end of each event the feedback is “I needed this” and “I don’t know why I don’t do this more.”


2) Play is the foundation for authentic connection.

45% of adults find it difficult to make new friends, which was not as much of a problem when we were children. The closest person on the playground would become our best friend for the day, and play is at the center of that connection.


3) Play is productive.

Research has shown that adults who prioritize play, experience an increase in productivity, more creativity, and greater health and happiness. I intentionally schedule my event at 5pm on a Friday, because I believe that your time is much better spent at my event, than working at 5pm on Friday.

Remember that we all have a kid within us that needs to experience play, joy and connection.

It’s your responsibility to find environments where you can let them out.

(And why most workplaces don’t prioritize it)

People believe that play is only for children
and has no place for adults.

This breaks my heart.

A lack of play leads to
➡ Toxic work environments.
➡ Stress and overwhelm.
➡ Disconnected families.
➡ Boring relationships.
➡ Memory loss.

Research has shown that play boosts endorphins, improving mood and mental health by fostering new neural connections in the brain.

Which is why I prioritize play throughout my day, no matter how busy my schedule is.

Here are my 5 favorite ways ways to infuse play into your every day, so that you can stay young forever. 

1️⃣  Sing in the shower.

Belt your favorite song to start your day, like no one is listening. 
Imagine you’re the lead singer playing in front of thousands.

2️⃣ Dance in the car.

Turn up your favorite jam, and get jiggy with it. 
A little shoulder action never hurt anybody. 
(Just keep your eyes on the road)

3️⃣ Wear bright colors.

Put on clothes that make you stand out. 
The more play you infuse in your fashion, 
the more joy you experience every time you look in the mirror.

4️⃣ Make jokes in the office.

Respectively of course. Don’t get HR called on you, 
but it’s okay to infuse humor into your day to day.

5️⃣ Engage in activities.

Plan activities with your close friends or family on a regular basis. 
(My goto is mini-golf, arcades, and dance!)

Do these each day this week and your entire mood will shift.

Do these everyday for the next year and your entire life will change.

6 unconscious traits that prevent you from making friends.

(at work and in your personal life)

Lack of Accountability - Avoiding responsibility for your actions and blaming others can lead to resentment and frustration among friends and coworkers.

Defensiveness - Can make it difficult in resolving conflicts, which is vital for the evolution of any relationship.

Passive Aggressiveness - People that agree to do things, and then demonstrate resentment through procrastination or inefficiency can lead to confusion, unresolved conflicts, and a breakdown in communication.

Jealousy - No one wants to be friends with someone that shares resentment towards their success, relationships, or possessions.

Constant Negativity - Persistent pessimism or negativity drains the energy from any relationship. 

Victim Mentality - Individuals who see themselves as the victim avoid taking responsibility for their actions, blame others for their misfortune, and place a burden on others to constantly address or rectify perceived wrongs.

Positive emotions have been related to improved decision-making skills. NEVER make BIG decisions in a bad mood or in a fight/flight response.

5 ways to reduce stress

(in as little as 1 hour per week)

In tech, it’s easy to work 60 hours per week without blinking.

Therefore managing stress requires intentional investments of your time outside of work into relaxing, rejuvenating activities.

Here are my 5 favorite ways to invest an hour each week to reduce long-term stress and burnout:


⛳ Invest in Hobbies

Designate 1 hour to be completely free from work-related activities and digital devices and engage in hobbies or activities that bring joy and relaxation.


🧘‍♂️ Invest in Mindfulness

Regular mindfulness practice can significantly reduce stress levels, enhance focus, and improve overall well-being, making it easier to navigate high-pressure environments.


🏃‍♀️ Invest in Movement

Schedule regular physical activity into the week, whether it's a gym session, yoga, or a brisk walk. Exercise is a powerful stress reliever. It pumps up endorphins, improves mood, and can be a great way to clear the mind.


👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Invest in Friends and Family

Proactively schedule time with friends and family. Strong social support is vital for stress management.


✍ Invest in Learning

Dedicate time each week to learn something new that is not directly related to work. Learning outside of work can provide a sense of achievement and personal growth, counteracting feelings of stagnation and burnout.


An hour of intentional activity can significantly decrease stress from compounding, prevent burnout and prolong your career.

3 reasons why I host a networking event in the park.

(and why we need more events like it)

I host an event called “NetPlay” in Austin, Texas once a month.

Here’s why I do it:

1) Remote work is causing us to become increasingly isolated.

Remote work has helped a lot of people improve their work/life balance, however it’s also contributed to an increased level of isolation, loneliness and time indoors.

That’s why NetPlay is in-person and outside. It forces people to leave their home and connect face to face.

2) Playful connection requires vulnerability and a unique way of being.

It’s easy to show up to events and put on a mask. At regular networking events, most people lead conversations with their employer, what they do for work, and rarely connect on a deeper level.

At NetPlay, we connect through play and classic childhood games like DuckDuckGoose, Red Light Green Light and Telephone.

I’ve noticed that during the games, people let their guard down and people are more authentic when it’s time to connect.

3) Play is vital to longevity, health and wellness.

Play can aid in stress reduction, help reduce stress levels, fatigue, boredom, and burnout.

In a world where we are constantly inundated with stress, it feels vital to create a space free of it.


We need more people creating spaces of joy, play and connection, because as a society we are drifting further and further apart.

It takes events like NetPlay to remind us that we’re not that different.

That we’re all kids that just want to belong and have fun.

Stop trading your personal life for professional success.

In Tech, there is a false belief that good leaders must put themselves last, sacrifice sleep, personal time, and mental health for the sake of team moral, revenue and deadlines.

This isn't just unsustainable; it's a fundamental misunderstanding of what modern leadership actually entails.

I've seen brilliant minds approach the brink of burnout, 
believing that their personal sacrifice is a testament to their dedication.

But here's the truth I share with them: real leadership, isn't measured by how much you can endure before breaking down, how many hours are logged and emails sent.

It's measured by the success of your team, while prioritizing your own personal mental health and well-being, demonstrating healthy boundaries, and maintaining a sustainable culture of creativity and innovation.
