My professional life has been centered around creating new businesses to satisfy a need or improve on an existing model. With an interest in athletics, my breakout business, after graduating from the University of Oregon, was to create a multi-use athletic club in Eugene, Oregon: the Eugene Athletic Club. A $7M sports complex with 310 condominiums on the banks of the Willamette River. This led me to Bellevue, Washington (Bellevue Athletic Club) followed by the Juanita Bay Athletic Club in Kirkland, Washington. I then joined a partnership of physicians to create a chain of back rehabilitation clinics titled Back in Action. This lead me to create a pre-work shift injury prevention stretching program titled FreeFlexRx, which initially included Nike as an investment partner. I went on to developed a youth sports training program, Youth SportsRx, with Reebok, focusing on training coaches in first aid and fundraising using calling cards. I went on to created a substance abuse prevention program for the workplace, ‘Drug Free Workplace’, and for schools ‘STEP Online’ (Students, Teachers, Employers, and Parents). These efforts were in partnership with USA Today, Community Anti Drug Coalition of America, Office of National Drug Control Policy, Partners for a Drug Free America, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). I was also involved in the development and operations of the San Francisco Spine Institute, followed by the development of a cryogenic stem cell storage venture with Blue Cross of California titled ‘Lifeguard Station 33’. Our focus was on marginalized populations that couldn't afford the fees for collecting and storage of umbilical cord blood (stem cells) after the birth of their child. With this collection of experiences I secured a business process patent: US Pat. No. 7612680 'Life Saving Advice', which updates and embeds into the memory on all electronic devices the local emergency information: what to do, where to go, how to get there, and what to do once you arrive... location of shelters, hospitals, evacuation routes, and more. By constantly keeping the local information updated with sponsor driven notifications (think YouTube or any of the streaming music channels) it allows us to not only instill greater confidence with every recipient, but at the same time generate community funding at zero cost. The revenue generated by these ongoing, geocoded updates will allow us to reinvest 100% of the proceeds back into the community for preparedness and recovery, while at the same time promoting unity.
