Founded a consulting company which also found prospects for listed (and some private) companies in return for equity and royalties.  My first client was Monterrico plc, whose Rio Blanco project had a resource of 170 Mt @ 1% declining at my arrival, and over 1 Bn tonnes at 0.8% at my departure at the end of the year.  Achieved through unglamorous geologic rigour with no shortcuts.

My second client was Exeter Resource corporation where I negotiated the acquisition of the Caspiche project, then 250,000 ounces, now 27M ounces of gold and an additional 19M ounces equivalent in copper.  As well as acting as commercial manager I ran the early stage exploration at Caspiche.

I then worked for a variety of companies in several commodities, mainly in Chile, but also other places in the Americas.

Latin American Copper plc

I floated Latin American Copper on the bizarre notion that the early noughties were a perfect time to explore for copper deposits in Chile.  Retail shareholders got this; institutions, not so much.

Despite a level of funding which was less than I could have earned over the period, we managed to acquire a modest resource with potential for expansion and to do JVs with two majors.  When we finally looked like raising some real money, my board decided life would be easier without me.  On the day of my departure the share price stood at three times our float price.

Epithermal gold and porphyry exploration, with a little orogenic gold and some lead zinc on the side.  My clients included: Rio Tinto, Barrick, ETSA, BHP, and Cyprus Minerals (for whom I discovered the secondary enrichment deposit at Rio Blanco).

I was Niugini Mining's man in the Solomons.  Mainly chasing epithermal gold, with a few side trips.  Great country, impossible politics, great company.

Kennecott Explorations

Simberi project.  I made a modest but significant contribution to this 6M oz mine.  I also came to know and become freinds with the people of the Tabar Group of Islands in PNG.

PNG Mining and Exploration

The first time I ever managed my own show.  Trained a National exploration team second to none, who taught me how to run a fly camp in the jungle and how to work with traditional landowners.   Regional exploration in the Torricelli/Bewani mountains, New Ireland and the highlands.  Set up database for legacy data.

For nearly three years I had the privilege of working in Barry McMahon's pit slope design team.  This included major projects at the Leigh Creek coalfield and the Lihir Island feasibility study, along with a host of minor projects.  

Besides learning the elements of rock mechanics at the feet of a master, I also learned to implement a higher degree of geologic rigour than previously, the elements of project management, and the joy of the well constructed technical report.

I have been an exploration geologist for a little more than forty years.  Most of that has been spent in copper/gold exploration in PNG and the Andes, although I have strayed into engineering geology, iron, uranium, lead/zinc and coal.

I have been instrumental in the discovery of two (possibly three) billion tonne porphyry deposits and once floated an exploration junior on the ridiculous assumption that the early noughties were a good time to explore for IOCG systems in Northern Chile.

Although I have been an early adopter of technology, I believe successful exploration is achieved by high performing, well motivated teams carrying out rigorous geology with NO shortcuts.
