Boston Dynamics has once again reinvented itself. It took my brain a while to parse what's going on in this video. We are so obsessed with "human-level" robotics that we forget it is just an artificial ceiling. Why don't we make a new species superhuman from day one? 

I am optimistic that humanoid robots will exceed the supply of iPhones in the next decade, freeing us from all kinds of undesirable or unsafe physical work. Gradually, then suddenly.

Meet our next generation Atlas! A humanoid designed for commercial applications.

We are taking all we have learned over 15 years of research on our hydraulic Atlas platform and putting it into the next generation of the program, a fully electric Atlas robot designed for real-world applications with super-human performance. 

Just like we did with Stretch, we will partner with a small group of innovative customers to drive the development of this robot toward applications that they care about. We have a hypothesis that robots like Atlas will provide the most value by moving parts that have complex shapes, sizes and weights. So if you believe you have one of these tasks, I would love to hear from you. 

We also believe that companies cannot go from zero to humanoid. Your operational journey toward deploying humanoids and other mobile robots can start today. A capable robot is only one of the pieces required for a successful commercial solution.

𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗺, 𝗠𝗔 - 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 - Today Boston Dynamics, the global leader in mobile robotics,  announced a new collaboration with Gravity Industries, the company that designs, builds and flies the trailblazing personal VTOL aviation systems, Jet Suits. The two companies aim to pioneer a new type of robotic exploration by giving Boston Dynamics' famed humanoid robot, Atlas, the ability to fly. The two teams recently began commencing test flights over Boston Harbor. 

The companies envision a surprisingly wide range of future applications for the flying robot, including wind turbine inspection and repair, wildfire monitoring and emergency support, skyscraper window washing, lost balloon rescues, and in-air traffic controllers and flight maintenance for commercial airliners.

“With so much global interest in new applications for quadrupeds and humanoids, we decided it was time to push the envelope,” explained Marc Theermann, Chief Strategy Officer for Boston Dynamics. “Walking on the ground almost seems easy these days, so we’re taking our innovation to the skies.” 

The earliest test case will focus on the flying robot’s aerial agility compared to that of a human. As part of the research and development phase, Atlas will begin participating in Gravity’s new racing series alongside human athletes. Competitors will command 1500bhp Jet Suits in the nail-biting pursuit of the race podium at iconic waterfront locations around the world. 

“We’re making science fiction a reality,” said Richard Browning, CEO of Gravity. “This is the closest most of us will ever come to feeling like a superhero, and we can’t wait to see all the places Atlas will be flying in the next few years.”

Mostar's selma svendsen has just been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of Boston Dynamics, one of the most advanced robotic companies in the world ❗️

💙Selma has been involved in robotics and company operations for 20+ years. She holds 22 patents for inventing technologies critical to robot design, including autonomous mobility behavior and mechanical cleaning systems found on popular iRobot products like the Roomba® vacuum cleaner.

💙Her inventions and leadership helped transform iRobot from a small startup in Massachusetts to a global, publicly traded consumer robot company with more than $1 billion in annual revenue.

💙She is the winner of numerous awards, including the famous TIME magazine's "Best Invention", the "Best of What's New" popular science award, and was inducted into the International Women in Technology Hall of Fame in 2017.

💙Selma grew up in Mostar, where she completed her studies in mechanical engineering at University Džemal Bijedić Mostar. She came to the United States in 1994 as a refugee, where she earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Northeastern University in Boston. In the US, she continued her passion for engineering and built an incredible career.

This is the most exciting humanoid robot yet.

Meet the redesigned Atlas from Boston Dynamics, an all-electric upgrade to the famous robot that was retired just a day earlier. Though it still wants on two legs, its movement is significantly smoother than its predecessor, and its frame is less bulky and more flexible. 

A more rounded aesthetic is intended to make it less industrial and more approachable, but you're probably distracted by its ability to fully rotate its head and waist. It's more than a neat trick, it can drastically increase productivity for a robot intended to help with manual labor.

🚀 It's happening! Boston Dynamics caves in to 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. After 30 years of being world-class at 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥-𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞-𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥, their next release of Spot will include both RL and MPC. 👇👇👇

It's not bad news in any way for Boston Dynamics, it's just showing where things are heading, and that Reinforcement Learning is not only for the 'weak in control theory', but also for the best minds.

RL succeeds due to the significant upscaling in simulating multi-body physics, such that in a matter of hours, thousands of generations of deep learning models are trained. I wrote about Isaac Gym before, it's that again at work.

They don't mention it, but I'm assuming they use a Model-free RL architecture.. oh the irony from being modelling specialist to no model at all 😅

Recently, one of our Spot robots valiantly helped end a standoff with an armed individual, and was shot three times in the process. The Spot robot took three bullets, and helped prevent both officers and the armed suspect from being exposed to lethal force. It's amazing to be part of an organization that helps save lives. Also, although there was some mild damage to the robot's wrist joint (including thermal melting caused by point blank muzzle fire), this Spot continues to function, and has returned to our HQ as a little robot hero.

It was jaw dropping to see each time to say the least...  This robot from Boston Dynamics really changed my idea of what robots can do!  Atlas has certainly set the standard and paved the way for the future of robotics globally 👏
