Volunteer Assistant

75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Army

I developed and mentored soldiers aspiring to join the 75th Ranger Regiment through the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP 1). Every day was different and involved a lot of personal interaction, as part of my role was to assess the suitability of a soldier for life as an Army Ranger. I learned the importance of logistics and a systems-based approach.

Because of this I developed an interest in software and technology. I learned to utilize programs to record and process metrics to make the program better. I helped lead an initiative to develop an app that could be paired with the current database, reducing workload by limiting the amount of manual data entry currently required. 

I enjoy my current role because I am constantly faced with new problems that require flexibility and adaptability to solve. My passion is identifying problems such as these and attacking them with creativity and outside-the-box thinking to generate a working result.

Instructor/Section Leader

I enlisted in the Army in 2015 with the goal of becoming an Army Ranger. I arrived at Fort Benning, GA and underwent infantry training, learned how to jump out of airplanes, and completed the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program. I watched my team leader and learned how to shoot, move tactically, clear compounds, seize airfields, and operate as part of a team to accomplish the mission. 

I advanced in responsibilities and worked as a leader in charge of a four person team. We ate, trained, worked out, and deployed to combat together. I learned the value of being detail-oriented and doing the small things with great care.

Army Ranger

Varied

Upon graduating college, I realized that my education was very incomplete – all of my learning had been achieved in the classroom or the library instead of “real life”. My friends were the same age as me with fairly similar backgrounds. So, instead of taking a traditional job, I decided that I would move to different parts of the country and work as many different/interesting jobs as possible. 

I fixed fence on a cattle ranch in Colorado, worked on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska, loaded trucks at an Amazon warehouse, and spent long days on a fracking crew in Wyoming. I experienced the soreness of a long days work and the joy of suffering and achieving with a tight-knit group. My colleagues came from all walks of life and I learned to listen first before passing judgement. I am thankful for this time as I gained an appreciation for a hard days work as well as clarity with regards to my path forward.
