Redefined processes for competitor research, keyword conquesting, and quality inbound link acquisition. Updated standards as frequently as the industry changed. Sat sales meetings with Biz Dev, held discovery sessions with clients, assembled the right team members to develop strategy, presented concepts to business owners and investors, and oversaw team production for a select portfolio of brands.

Bookspan, LLC

Responsible for leading a department of 13 marketers, designers, copywriters and product buyers during the transformation of 6 male-interest and 4 home and lifestyle book clubs into reaching a younger demographic of readers. 

Developed genre-specific blogs, contests, and communities to position unique online video and marketing collateral. Oversaw SEO and content efforts on newly developed Magento websites. Leveraged cross-promotional email and social media initiatives for both customer acquisition and retention. Revitalized print catalogs and collateral to save costs and increase offline conversions.

Marketing Lead for the migration and replatforming of 25 websites from legacy systems to Magento and the supervision of 9 marketers across the business throughout development, UAT and rollout. 

Bookspan (formerly Direct Brands) has served readers for over 90 years, and today online, with membership brands like Book of the Month Club.

Oversaw Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Paid Search/Search Engine Marketing (SEM), and Social Media Marketing (SMM) acquisition channels for 26+ brands online; including Columbia House, Book-of-the-Month Club, and Doubleday Book Club.

Worked in coordination with Email, Direct Partners/Affiliates, Telemarketing, and Direct Mail marketing channel owners to align acquisition budget and provide consistent on-site experiences.

Developed and implemented brand building and marketing strategies for Acme Media's largest assets, including the creation of a 250+ strong network of bloggers and product reviewers, multiple Social Media Marketing channels and programs, Email Marketing for a subscription base of >80k purchasers, and SEO/SEM campaigns from inception to optimization.

Designed and developed sales and marketing databases for visibility into demographics, purchase behavior, and an RFM of >200k online retail customers. Provided feedback and analysis to Coles-Myer's marketing team to influence website design and online marketing decisions, as well as cost saving measures with fulfillment. Transitioned all systems from Sydney to Melbourne and trained staff.

Next week, my friends at Goodby Silverstein & Partners will lose their GSP email addresses and be assimilated into the Omnicom BORG, complete with their new omc.com mandate.

I don’t know why this pisses me off so much.

I don’t work at GS&P anymore — and in the grand scheme of corporate horrors these days, an email switch is hardly the worst offense. But it’s just so...stupid.

Working at GS&P (three different stints!) was one of the best jobs I ever had. It was advertising grad school, with amazing opportunities, colleagues, and resources. I owe my career in advertising to the people I met there, the things I learned, and the alumni network that STILL supports me to this day.

It was weird and wonderful and frustrating and rewarding...but it MEANT something to work there. It was different from other shops.

Omnicom used to take a lighter touch with its stable of agencies. They understood that their uniqueness made the whole stronger. That the quirks weren’t “inefficiencies” to be smoothed out, but the special sauce that made a place stand out — the reason clients wanted to work with them.

But those days are over.

Holding companies aren’t creative collectives anymore. They’re hedge funds, minimizing risk and maximizing “value.” The only goal: reduce headcount, cut costs, and pump up the stock price for the next quarter.

It's colossally stupid. They're destroying long-term value in favor of a short-term sugar high. But the people making these decisions don’t care about the long term. They have earnings calls to prep for.

They bought the food court and now want every kiosk to serve the same meal. They'll merge all the great legacy agency brands eventually — and then wonder why their clients hate them. (Monopolies might be good for the balance sheet, but they suck for customers.)

It’s not just GS&P. ALL the Omnicom agencies are being stripped of their unique URLs. Mass homogenization.

So yeah, it’s just an email switch.

But it’s also a symbol of how the soul of this business keeps getting chipped away.

Not with some big, dramatic gesture, but with small, stupid decisions that slowly erase what made advertising fun, weird, and meaningful.

And once it’s gone, it’s not coming back.
