Opencast Software

Opencast Software is an independent software house that specialises in designing, building, managing and optimising enterprise software utilising agile delivery methodologies. Whilst Head of Delivery my role involved leading the delivery function of the business and it also encompassed providing direction for the resource, contract and client management. As a member of Opencast Software’s Senior Management Team the business grew from circa 20 people with a £1.5M turnover in 2015 to circa 80 employees with a £5M turnover in 2018.

Successful deliveries and responsibilities included:

Programme Manager for the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA) for their Mainframe Migration

The £3M programme’s aim was to remove the need for the mainframe, moving services to existing or new platforms at a lower cost whilst delivering business continuity. The role was a part-time quality assurance and delivery role, which ensured that the programme and its 5 projects adhered to the BSA’s project governance, agile delivery and financial regulations.

Project Manager for the Department of Health for their Abortion Notification System replacement project.

Parachuted into the implementation phase of the project to ensure that the replacement Abortion Notification System was put back on track and delivered on time. This was required as the project was heading towards failure due to 3rd Party Supplier delivery problems. The key focus was supplier management, to ensure their deliveries matched the DH’s acceptance criteria and were delivered on time and to budget. It also involved taking the non-technical DH staff, including the Public Health Director, on the delivery journey.

Scrum Master/Product Owner for the successful delivery of a diverse collection of agile projects:
•	Class Actions Management System for a Financial sector client
•	Wind Energy Benchmarking Service for a Renewables Energy sector client
•	iPost Automated Franking and Mailing System for a Public sector client

Head of Projects/Senior Project Manager

Mi-Case

Mi-Case is responsible for the supply, implementation, continued development and support of a suite of web based software solutions for Criminal Justice, substance abuse and Oil & Gas upstream well management.

Current and previous successful deliveries and responsibilities include:

•	Delivered the detailed planning for two successful $25M tenders for the replacement of the Criminal Justice systems for two US states
•	Successfully implemented the delivery of the US Criminal Justice solution to be the “system of Record” for all prisoners for the State of Maryland
•	The transformation of the US police-centric Criminal Justice solution to a European prisoner centric one, by rebuilding circa 250 screens, in 12 key modules, to enable the 38 prisons of the Belgium Prison service to be in a position to migrate to the Mi-Case Criminal Justice solution in August 2014 
•	Account, Operational & Portfolio management of circa 25 resources on around 20 concurrent deliveries for the 3 primary Mi-Case product suites, for over 20 clients, including the primary Oil & Gas accounts of TAQA and BG Group
•	Delivery of a Risk Assessment module to the Upstream Oil & Gas solution. I was brought in to salvage the Risk Assessment module’s delivery, which was running late and over budget
•	Implementation of the Lock Valve module to the Upstream Oil & Gas solution. This was a major product enhancement and was successfully delivered following the implementation of new project management processes I proposed and introduced to Mi-Case
•	Implementation of the Upstream eLogbook solution to BGG Australia in 4 weeks. This was completed entirely remotely (from the project initiation stage right through to implementation) and involved the deployment of the solution in an Australian data centre
•	The day to day management of 2 Account Managers, 1 Project Leader, 2 DBAs, 3 on-shore and 1 off-shore testers, and 6 on-shore, 8 off-shore and a fluctuating number of contract developers

Mi-Case – Senior Project Manager

British Airways

British Airways is a £9 billion organisation and the largest UK based airline, by fleet size, with 47,000 staff. Currently Project Managing a number of projects decommissioning BA’s current Customer and Flight Management systems. It includes co-ordinating hardware, software and staff outside direct management control. Ensuring projects adhere to design processes and products. Risk, quality and project plan management are undertaken. Key customer and manager expectations and relationships are managed effectively. Appropriate resourcing requirements are identified to deliver to required service levels/quality levels and ensuring appropriate contracts are defined for supply of IT products, whilst supporting the skills development of team members. Some of my implementations include:

· Currently completing the implementation of a project to replace BA World Cargo’s container tracking system with a new 3rd Party solution. This will ensure that BA World Cargo can continue to track 18,000 containers (at around 150 stations worldwide
· Employee Self Service (ESS) Robust Portal. A 3rd Party Portal implementation that provided BA with a robust and flexible platform to deploy Employee Self-Service applications and encapsulating BA’s award winning Intranet for its 100,000 current and past BA employees
· ESS Reporting Architecture project to implement a Corporate System for securely storing and publishing reports to the 47,000 current BA employees
· New & Small Portal Developments project that exploited the 3rd Party Portal mentioned above. The purpose of the project was to implement various portlets to the business to make it easier for employees to manage their work and life. 4 major releases, which included 10 plus portlets, 20 plus portal pages, and a sub-project to enable zero systems downtime during upgrades, were all delivered within a year’s time box 
· Duty Travel Booking project implementing a 3rd Party Duty Travel Application resulting in £100K savings per month

IT Project Manager

LG.Philips Displays Durham

LG.Philips Displays was the world’s biggest TV and computer monitor cathode ray tube maker, which was a 50-50 joint venture between Netherlands-based Philips Electronics and South Korea-based LG Electronics. It was, at its height, a £3 billion business, with 23 factories, in 10 countries, employing 27,000 staff. The Information Systems Manager role involved managing 4 Operators maintaining 7*24 critical systems cover to the business and 5 Development staff implementing business systems improvements in support of the cost reduction initiatives of the business. Aligning the IS Strategy to the Business Strategy, without impacting service levels to the business, whilst reducing the IT budget spend from £1M to £0.58M over three years for this £100M pa business. Further achievements included:

· Managing the transition of all the UK IT systems for the joint venture between Philips and LG, for 7 ex-Philips UK sites implementing new E-mail, Local Area Network, Wide Area Network and Desktop systems, within an immoveable 1-year deadline, to support the joint venture
· Improving Manufacturing and Engineering efficiency through successfully implementing the MANMAN MRP, Computer Aided Manufacturing and Asset Management systems, which improved yield 4%, reduced machine downtime by 5% and produced overall annual savings of £2M
· Pioneering the introduction of the Data Protection and IT Security to the 7 LG.Philips Displays UK sites
· Being a principal internal consultant to Corporate IT, for the provision of a Global ERP package, resulting in £20M savings for the Global Business 
· Implementing a best practice Helpdesk environment for the business, to manage both the IT workload and the user expectations, handling over 10,000 calls 
· Introducing the Capability Maturity Model processes into the Information Systems department.

Viasystems / Interconnection Systems Limited (ISL)

Viasystems Tyneside Limited was a £250 million pound facility employing circa 1000 employees. It was formerly Interconnection Systems Limited, until 1997, when it was taken over by the Viasystems Group, Inc., which is still the World’s largest device manufacturer for complex multi-layer printed circuit boards, wire harnesses and electro-mechanical solutions. The group now has 25,000 employees and a $500 million turnover. Other achievements included:

· Managing a multi-disciplined development team of up to 15 programmers and Data Base Administrators developing and maintaining pan-European systems and being accountable for multiple concurrent projects for the full project life cycle 
· Performing a central role in the Business process re-engineering for the business areas covered by Viasystems European Shared Service Centre (ESSC)
· Managing the development of the Forms, Reports and Interfaces required to fill the gaps that the Oracle Financials applications could not provide for the ESSC
· Delivering the interfacing design for integrating five different MRP packages into the European Shared Service Centre Oracle Financials application
· Implementing an Oracle MRP system into Viasystems VAAS facility on Tyneside
· Liaising with functional teams to understand and provide technical input into their solution requirements, quality assuring systems analysis and design
· Recruitment of and contract negotiations with independent consultants for the year 2000 project
