I'm a seasoned (ageing) communications professional with a wealth of experience in the commercial/third sector. I am as adept at integrated marketing strategy as traditional public relations, campaigning and community engagement. I have a proven track record of leading teams, telling stories effectively and protecting brand reputation. After ten years in the Third Sector, I currently work in local government. Previously, I was External Communications Manager at Leonard Cheshire for nearly five years, leading a team on integrated comms activity related to their work across the world; supporting disabled people to live, learn and work. Successes included leading on media campaigns for policy areas involving employment, social care and hate crime that resulted in significant national press coverage. I also led on crisis management, parliamentary briefings and media training for senior staff. My previous role was leading integrated comms for Network Rail's railway suicide prevention programme at Samaritans. I designed a pioneering plan that targeted C2DE men, harnessing sport and celebrity ambassadors, paid advertising, social media and press. This resulted in measured increases in impact, reach and awareness of the award winning We Listen campaign. In my initial role in the Third Sector, I managed a small team as Head of Community Engagement at Movember UK across five campaigns from 2011 to 2015. My responsibilities included corporate fundraising, particularly within London's Square Mile, developing and implementing a regional communities strategy based on increasing participation and retaining fundraisers across targeted corporate sectors. I also conducted numerous press interviews on live national television and radio. In May 2013 I won an internal award for the best global Grassroots Community Activation during the 2012 campaign and was Employee of the Year in 2014. I learned my trade at Sky Sports, where I worked as a Senior Publicist during the growth years of the mid 1990s up to 2010. During this time I was also a reporter for the Soccer Saturday programme and radio stations including Capital Gold and GLR (now BBC London). I retain a passion for old school public relations and shy away from over complication, corporate snake oil merchants and talk-a-good-game consultants. There’s no substitute for good contacts, credible stories and creative ideas that engage, inspire and increase impact. I specialise in strategy, campaigning, media relations, community engagement, creative writing, broadcasting, fundraising and public speaking.
