Having worked with a range of clients from large corporations like Nestle to smaller e-commerce startups, it’s a trend I’ve observed over the course of time. This has led me to move toward more interim CMO roles with a focus on leading strategic outbound activities to test market receptiveness.

The challenge is real: deciding whether to ‘zig’ or ‘zag.’

The pandemic showed us something interesting. 
A world where online shopping is the norm, but… 
The aftermath has revealed some significant challenges. 

Especially with delivery services. 

Crazy fees and unsustainable business models are highlighting a critical crossroads for e-commerce and delivery startups, especially those trying to address the ‘last mile’ phenomenon. 

My recent experiences with seemingly simple orders breaking the bank is making me think about just how sustainable these services are long-term. 

Doesn’t seem like the delivery of a $10 burrito to your front door from the restaurant should end up costing you $30 after everyone gets their piece. 

This crossroads is going to force delivery and e-commerce businesses to innovate and find a balance that offers value to consumers without compromising on service quality. 

The future of online commerce depends on our ability to adapt and evolve in the response to these emerging challenges.

eCommerce website experience hinges on one thing.
Friction reduction.
Here's why it's so important.


Ever visited an eCommerce store website and everything is difficult? It's almost as if they've intentionally made purchase as hard as possible to prevent you from buying?

That's friction.

These sites are cluttered and busy.
And by default, that makes them confusing.

The best customer website journeys reduce friction as much as possible.

Especially through "click reduction."

It should take you, at most, a few clicks to purchase.

Some sites are masters at this.

And others, not so much.
Those who aren't effectively "unselling" people ready to buy.

So, go back and review your store's site and see where there's friction. If you were a visitor, where would you get stuck? Is there a clear path to purchase without getting overwhelmed by clutter?

If so, great, you're way ahead of most.
If not, make those tweaks.

The speed at which ideas get stolen these days, and then products mass-produced, is scarily rapid. 

The reality of that speed requires all brand owners to do something very specific to protect their intellectual property.

With the advancement of AGI, it's easy for people to knock off products by slightly modifying them to avoid your intellectual property or copyright protections. 

Therefore, it's a race for any brand to build something "defensible" within any new product you take to the market to have some legal protections.

Companies like Shein are a great example of how products can be knocked-off, and quality could be better and closer to the original version. When this mass production happens, the overall quality level of the product is dramatically degraded.

This risk is less profound for high-end designers or creators, but it's a constant and pressing threat for startup designers and those with fewer resources.

So ask yourself this: 

What can you do to protect your new products out of the gate, as soon as they hit the market, so they're harder to knock off and so you can protect yourself?

One way is through trade secrets, but that's more for another post.

You'll have to constantly consider whether selling online makes up a majority, or even a degree of your income.

Think through it!
