I was one of those kids who always loved science -- no one was surprised that I went to study molecular toxicology at UC Berkeley, with an eye towards med school. But when a classmate suggested I try wet lab research in the Bjeldanes Lab, they changed my trajectory in more ways than I could have imagined. It was my first real exposure to biotechnology/pharmaceutical R&D, and I was hooked. I joined the Leitman Lab next, studying the mechanisms of action of estrogen during menopause, aging, and breast cancer. I loved seeing how our work supported the scientific community in directly improving the human condition. But there was a big challenge that kept coming up over and over again. In every lab, financial and operational roadblocks would come up, halting the lab’s work in its tracks… And preventing brilliant scientists from making a difference. It was INCREDIBLY frustrating. When I surveyed the professors at UC Berkeley & UC San Francisco, they all had the same problems: 💰Capital constraints in their budget 🔬And equipment downtime that brought their labs to a screeching halt I knew I could do more good by removing these roadblocks than I could as an individual contributor in the lab. So in 2011, we founded Excedr with a mission to accelerate scientific innovation by reducing the financial burdens that kept innovative, fast-moving labs from securing mission-critical equipment needed to change the world. #dreambig We ran our pilot equipment lease program at UC Berkeley, making our way into other universities and government labs, and finally into the private sector life sciences industry. 10 years later, we’re living that dream. Our mission and our work are the same, and we’re helping brilliant researchers acquire the equipment they need to solve some of our world’s most pressing challenges.
