If you want to get promoted in Excel, you’ll need to know how to visualize results. 📊

That’s because promotions go to people who can explain what happened. 

Here are some tips as you build charts in Excel: 

1️⃣ Use Excel tables! This will let you update your chart data without adjusting the reference addresses of the charts. 
2️⃣ Create your own format. Excel’s defaults do not follow good data viz principles. 
3️⃣ Stay away from VBA! Your boss doesn't need that much interactivity. Less is more.

The essence of good data visualization is being able to deliver a message quickly and effectively.

Does automation mean VBA, Power Query, Office Scripts, or Power Platform?

That’s because to get promoted, you’ll need to take on more responsibility. 

That means directing automations instead of coding them yourself. It means mentoring others to build your vision. 

Leading a team will require you to be able to move in and out of different technologies.

Through my journey, I’ve met all types of people. 

Most are genuine, warm, gracious, and real. 

But some people are just good at faking these qualities. 

I didn’t want to believe it at first, because I was taught to give people the benefit of the doubt. 

Over the years, I’ve grown weary of bringing new people in my network. Because I’ve run into people who said the right thing but weren’t dependable. 

In one case, someone offered me a job under the pretense that we would partner on something big. I told him I didn’t want to work for anyone and that I didn’t want to get paid per hour, but that I would partner on a large project. He spent a lot of time courting me: a large project was in the works they assured me, and I should just become their employee to make it easy to pay me. 

Less than a day into becoming my “boss,” the tone changed: he said I was dramatic, overpaid (he was paying me far less than my competition), and if I wanted to keep the job I needed to get with the program. I needed to prove myself to work on the bigger project initially teased. 

So I said, “Ok… I quit.” 

He went ballistic. Telling me I had broken a contract, threatening me, suggesting I was selfish for making him “wait to hire me so I could go on vacation.” I was still recovering from a back injury, a point I had made clear to him. 

“What contract?” I pointed out, “I’m an at-will employee.” 

His tirade continued, so I interrupted.

“You’re not listening,” I explained, “I don’t want to work for you. And so, I’m not going to. Get it? You can keep the payment for the work completed. We’re done.” 

Then came the nasty text messages. 

I couldn’t imagine why someone would want me to still work for them after burning the relationship. They talked of how much I needed them. In their mind, they were entitled to my efforts on their own terms. 

These people seemed like a mystery until I read “The Sociopath Next Door.”

What's a sociopath? A sociopath has no conscience or ability for empathy. We think of sociopaths as criminals. But in truth, most live banal lives. 

This book will help you understand this often misunderstood part of our society, which represents 4% of the population. The business culture of the West creates the perfect mask through which these people operate. Their motives are hard to identify. If you’re their target, you might feel like an island on your own. 

One great takeaway from this book is a simple test when working with people. Give them three chances. If they’re undependable, break a promise, or violate your boundaries three times, then you shouldn’t be around them. It doesn’t matter if they fit the DSM criteria for sociopathy or not. 

You cannot change these people. Your best bet is to keep them out of your orbit.

To get promoted in Excel, you’ll need to give up the title of being the ‘Excel Expert.’ 💡

For many of you this will be really hard.

You believe being the expert is what will validate your skills. 

But experts can’t do it all. And promotions go not to expert technicians, but rather those who can show leadership and take on more responsibility.

At one point in time, I felt like I needed to be THE Excel expert. I spent lots of time here on LinkedIn attempting to prove it to people. 

But over time, I had to realize I didn't know everything. And, in truth, being the best at something doesn’t mean you get your work done. 

Nowadays I know I’m not the best. Though I do think I can handle myself, I see another generation of Excel users who are taking my work and making it even better. 

Part of being a leader is helping others grow.

Which means you have to stop focusing on being the ‘expert’ and start moving into becoming a data mentor.

First comes obsession. Then comes restraint. 

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the interplay between obsession and restraint. We get a lot of confusing messages about it. Go hard, the obsessive side says. Don’t kill yourself, says the other. 

I know a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with this. It’s hard to know what to do when you have competing thoughts. 

I’ve also applied the principles of obsession versus restraint when it came to starting my digital nomad journey.

In August 2022, I packed up my entire life and moved to Lisbon, Portugal. 

I spent hours and hours in an obsessive state. I researched everything I needed to know. I spoke to other digital nomads over Zoom. I was very prepared and ready to go. 

Or so I thought. 

Here’s the story I used to feel embarrassed about. I guess I really thought if I didn’t execute this thing perfectly I would have let my community down. But I’m over it now. 

So here’s what happened…

Sometime between late July and my move in August 2022, I misplaced my passport. 

I’m pretty sure it was stolen. I know where I left it. 

And people were touring my apartment when I wasn’t home because it was my last month there. 

So… I didn’t have a passport and I was moving to Lisbon in less than a month! I tried to pursue my digital nomad visa without it, but they turned me away. 

I decided my best course of action was to move to Lisbon as planned. And go from there. I was able to get a new passport–it was printed less than 24 hours before I left. 

Once I arrived, I talked to a lawyer and a few other experts. They said I had to come back to the United States to start the process over. 

So I flew to Washington D.C., went through the process at the consulate, and had my passport mailed to me in about 10 days. 

My obsessive side got the job done.

But when I realized that other things were out of my control, I brought in some restraint. I had to let go and just enjoy the mini adventure for what it was. 

As a digital nomad and as a business owner, you’ll need to be able to move between obsession and restraint as the situation evolves. 

But if you’re wondering where to start to get things done…

My view is….

First bring your obsessive side by attacking it with full force. 

Then calibrate that energy with restraint. 

If you do that, you’ll be able to handle anything.

When it comes to using Excel for work, what do you struggle with the most? 

The secret to (actually) keeping it together while traveling for work ✈️

As I’m settling back in Lisbon after a week in Bulgaria, I thought about all the habits I picked up along the way from my learned experiences of being a digital nomad. 

Particularly, what has helped in making travels more smooth and kept me productive, organized, and focused. 

So here are 3 tips on how to keep it together while traveling as a digital nomad: 

1️⃣ Set work boundaries — Set your working hours and stick to them. With clients or coworkers in different time zones, it’s easy to slip into working all hours of the day. Once you start working outside of your established work hours, that could lead to expectations that you work any day, any time. This is not sustainable. Block meetings that fall outside of your working hours, set your Slack on mute after hours — whatever you need to do to avoid the temptation of checking “one last thing”...do it. 

2️⃣ Routine rituals — Make time to do something for yourself every day. Whether that’s journaling, working out, or going for a walk, schedule dedicated time for yourself. A little bit of time each day can go a long way in taking care of your mind and body, helping you stay focused and sharp. Traveling will only be fun so long as you stay healthy. 

3️⃣ Backup internet — You might check into your hotel and realize that the WiFi is spotty or there’s a sudden internet outage in the area. There are a few options out there: use your phone’s mobile hotspot feature, purchase a dedicated hotspot device with a data-only plan, or purchase a travel router. You can decide what works best for you, but always have a backup. 

👉 BONUS: tap into your local digital nomad community and connect with friends. Everyone has their own stories and insights to share and we can learn from each other. For me, meeting up with my Excel friends (like in this photo!) when they’re in town is often the highlight of my travels.

Do you know about the Marshmallow test? 

It’s a study of self-discipline, conducted by Stanford researchers in the 70s. 

Children were offered a choice between receiving a treat now (the “marshmallow”) or waiting and receiving a double treat later. 

What the researchers found tells us a lot about self-discipline today: children who chose to forgo immediate rewards in favor of more later had better outcomes in life. Differences in their brains even appeared in scans (during a mid-life follow up) as compared to those children who chose to not wait. 

I came out to Lisbon to find more solopreneurs like me. But I was surprised by how many I’ve met who described themselves as lacking in discipline. Discipline, of course, isn’t just getting things done; it’s also the acceptance of your own limitations. In other words, the negative self-talk is a type of lack of discipline existing irrespective of the work getting done. 

This is an important point. Because the science of delayed gratification does a better job of explaining our own behavior than the stories we tell ourselves, many of which were formed in childhood, long before we even knew real responsibility. What researchers found for instance is that children who did not think about the marshmallows at all fared better than the children who imagined double the reward. 

The process of manifestation, whether you believe it to be metaphysical or simply a very useful placebo, says we should imagine ourselves enjoying the additional rewards that result from delayed gratification. The Marshmallow says the opposite: when we feel tempted to stray, we should remove ourselves from the game. 

Contrary to popular advice, our obsession with the future and focus on our “why” can potentially work against our own success. The case studies of this are perhaps the entrepreneurs I’ve met over the years, who seem stuck: they’re actually very disciplined but caught in a never-ending desire to prove it. 

I’m not saying you shouldn’t imagine a good future for yourself. But when does the story of self become an easy treat? Negative self-talk is a type of self-indulgence; it’s much easier than doing work.  

Perhaps it’s time to remove yourself from that game. 

And think about something else.

Extreme Ownership is a book by two former Navy seals on the importance of leadership, taking the lessons of the battlefield to the boardroom.

The crux of this book is that leaders need to take full, 100 percent ownership to be effective. That means owning the failures of the people they lead AND the failures of the people they support. In other words: everything is under their control. And the subsequent outcomes are a direct result of their desire to be fully accountable. This is what makes “extreme” ownership. 

I have to admit, I didn’t expect to like this book. Its authors were a core part of the Navy SEAL teams in the American invasion of Iraq. My own relationship to the war has changed over the years. When I was young, I supported it, because I grew up in a conservative household. But over the years I’ve come to question the validity of all wars. 

Still, I think the lessons of battlefields do tell us a lot about how we should lead in our organizations. 

The stories in which the authors transferred their skills to companies are invaluable in the information they impart. Managers who don’t see themselves as actors become victims of their circumstance. They blame everyone else.

From my own perspective, social media says leadership is about amassing status and wealth. People will follow you, if you demonstrate a life of consumption, extravagance, and lack of accountability. My “follower count” here on LinkedIn is a pretty number, but a misleading term.

True leadership is in short supply. We have forgotten the fundamentals. For instance, troops follow their leaders when they understand the reasons why they’re being asked to do something, not just because they’re told to do it.

This lesson directly from the book affects everything from team dynamics to making your next sale. 

If you want people in your tribe to buy your course offering, then providing a dizzying array of options will just create confusion. If you want people to respond to your LinkedIn posts, you need to stop complaining about how hard it is to satisfy the algorithm. Is the algorithm the problem, or are you not reaching your troops effectively? Why should anyone engage in your content if you don’t give them a reason?

Despite what you hear, success isn’t tangible. 

It’s a feeling that comes as a direct product of consistency.  

When you embrace this, you’re never really behind on your goals. The more consistent you are, the more throughput (and output). Eventually, this creates momentum that can’t be stopped. 

On some days, I push the ball forward more than others. But I always advance my business every single day. 

For instance, last year I made it a goal to improve my health and my business marketing knowledge. 

I wrote “Health” and “Marketing” with a dry-erase marker on my bathroom mirror. I looked at it every day.  

So I went to the gym a lot (my coach is Trent Harrison at Ransomed Bodies Training, Inc), and I read a ton on marketing. 

I made an effort to push the ball forward (no matter how small the push) in both of these areas every day. 

Understand: the point of a goal is not always to achieve it. 

Instead, the value is in trying and discovering.

I’m in town attending Bulgaria Excel Days, an international conference covering the latest news and trends in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Power Query, Power Pivot (DAX), AI, Data Visualization, Financial Modeling, and Analysis. 

This is my first time attending. I also have the honor of speaking to conference participants about AI in Excel in my presentation "AI in Excel without programming: Let's build a spam detector!" 

We’re going to be implementing a data science project from my new book ‘Data Smart’ using Naïve Bayes and a bag of words. 

This is actually super easy to do in Excel with Power Query and Excel tables. 

At every Excel event, there are of course familiar faces and friends that I’m excited to run into, like Oz du Soleil, Ken Puls, Boriana Petrova, Alan Murray, and Gašper Kamenšek.
