At its broadest, José is a national award-winning mental health advocate, speaker, and researcher. As a student at Columbia College, he combines cognitive science research with lived mental health experiences to better understand youth well-being dynamics and attitudes in marginalized communities. He is interested in how epistemology shapes policymakers' understanding of youth mental health and how epidemiology informs evidence-based mental health policy-making. Currently, alongside Columbia Professor Wilcox, he is blending academic scholarship with lived experience to develop a digital intervention aimed at alleviating depressive disorders in marginalized communities in the U.S. To make his work and research more accessible, he co-founded Khipú, a project dedicated to translating mental health research for Hispanic communities and amplifying Hispanic stories and local engagement. José’s leadership and public scholarship have been featured in publications such as Harvard Public Health Magazine, Columbia Political Review, USA Today, and more. He continues to work with and advise some of the nation's most renowned mental health nonprofits. At its most intimate, as a bilingual immigrant, José’s work is dedicated to translating knowledge and hope to communities and individuals whose stories, lived experiences, and academic contributions have been linguistically inaccessible, historically undermined, and frequently overlooked.
