Senior Planning Engineer

Seconded to EDF and responsible for providing planning support to the EDF Energy Generation work portfolio.

Develop, control, monitor, analyse and report on schedule related aspects for designated projects within a Portfolio.

Establish and monitor a cost and resource loaded, logic linked, baseline plan for the project in accordance with CTO Programme Office processes.

Capture project budgetary costs and resources in the plan to determine time phasing of expenditure and the total project budget.

Work with the Project Manager and the Project team to establish the project activities, cost and durations and ensure that these reflect project scope, constraints and commitments.  Challenge as necessary to ensure compatibility and compliance.

Interface with other departments regarding the project’s activities which may have an impact and ensure these are correctly captured.

Facilitate acceptance of and ensure that the project plan embraces the full project work scope, is fit for purpose and is achievable.  This to be done in collaboration with the Project Manager and the project’s Key Team Members / Task Managers.

Maintain and control project baselines in line with company procedures and guidance. 

Ensure the reasons for, and the factors influencing each change to the project’s baseline plan plus the implications of such change are understood and communicated with the wider project team. 

Liaise with project team members and contractors with regards to progress and cost forecasting.

Monitor, control and analyse the project programme and cost information using Earned Value methodologies, identify variances and bring these to the attention of the Project Manager with possible alternatives, prepare specific reports to facilitate challenge and analysis to meet the project’s specific needs. 

Regular interfacing and integration with the project controls team to maintain an aligned financial position with the Project Plan.

Planning Engineer

Nuvia Limited

Employed by Nuvia ltd, in the nuclear sector I Reported to the Planning Manager and gained experience working in both a tendering and post contract environment. Built schedules from first principles, under different forms of contract (NEC3, FIDIC etc), for many clients. I was then based in Barrow-In-Furness on a multi-million pound, multi-discipline project, updating the live master schedule, carrying out EVA, KPI's, managing change, monitoring and reporting progress.

Responsibilites:
- Support the planning needs of Nuvia.
- Development of project programmes using Primavera P6 under different forms of contract.
- Logically underpin the programme with a commercial and contractual awareness.
- Communicate effectively with the project team and externally.
- Production of any other project documentation as instructed under the contract or internally.
- Monitor progress of projects.
- Provide weekly and monthly reports, highlighting areas of risk/opportunity and critical path analysis.

Planner

Propipe ltd

During my time with Propipe I worked in the pig testing department with the Projects Director. The testing department simulated specific subsea pipeline features from out in the field, which were anticipated to be the most problematic for the proposed pig tool to pass through. The purpose of this was to give the client peace of mind that the pig was fit for purpose and was not going to create issues in the line or perform poorly, which could lead to significant cost implications.

My duties included:
- Production of test reports, method statements & risk assessments.
- Ensure pressure gauges and transmitters were calibrated before testing.
- Obtain test data using NextView software and include the data in test reports.
- Liaison with various suppliers and hire companies to ensure the necessary pipework, pumps, tanks, flow meters etc were ordered and delivered in accordance with the agreed timescale.
- Assist the projects director when required and prepare data logging equipment to record pressures in the line and flow speeds. This was carried out by wiring the individual pressure transmitters and flow meters back to the data logger and configuring the Nextview software.

Achievements:
- Managed a cleaning pig maintenance project. This required constant communication with the client and documenting any damage the pig had sustained through the pipeline. Refurbishing parts of the pig and re-certifying when required. This was of particular significance, as the line being cleaned was one of the client's most productive in the area.
- Produced test reports using the data obtained from testing and project information sent from the client.
- Produced specific health and safety documentation for each project I was involved in.
- Gained a fundamental understanding of pig testing, with some hands on experience and an insight into the oil and gas industry.

Project Engineer

Upon returning to JN Bentley as a graduate I was brought straight back into the "Minor Works" team and was able to carry on from from where I left off during my placement year, with increased responsibility, being handed my own projects from the start.

My duties included the following:
- Manage a variety of projects from cradle to grave of values up to £150K on waste water treatment sites. Working to tight budgets, finding efficiencies where possible, taking into account any maintenance requirements and working to both the client's and British Standards. 
- Carry out site surveys to help the client determine what sites and areas were to be made the priority for future budgets.
-  Be commercially aware and produce BoQ's which were then presented internally before submission to the client. 
- Assist the client with compiling the contract data part 1 and eventually completing the whole contract and works information, as part of the proposal documentation.

Achievements:
- Tackled a series of challenging projects, offering the client time saving solutions and working with suppliers to research alternative materials/products to reduce the lead in time and cost. Each option I would make sure to relay the cost vs quality implications of each option back to the client.
- Gained an understanding of PID controllers and was actively involved in the commissioning of a system involving PID control.
- Continued assisting other projects in a mechanical capacity, carrying out pump sizing calculations when required and checking these over with a senior mechanical engineer.
- Successfully worked closely with the Quantity Surveyors to identify any areas of risk and opportunity for each project.

Graduate M&E Engineer

Initially I was employed by JN Bentley on an industrial placement. During this time I worked with a senior project leader on a range of waste water projects, contractually bound by NEC options A & C. These project were all part of the "minor works" framework. This meant the projects were up-to £150K in value and required a quick turn around time, as the work was often reactive and process critical to the client. By the end of the year I was leading my own project, had gained an understanding of the sewage treatment process and even carried out some electrical design and pump sizing.

During the industrial placement my duties included:
- Assisting with the production of the tender proposal documentation. This included, but was not limited to, contractual data part 2, BoQ's, D&C programme.
- Identifying H&S and environmental issues early and producing risk assessments, presenting them to senior members of staff and the CDM-C.
- Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure agreed timescales and quality aspects were met.
- Completion of the Document Requirement List in accordance with the client's demands.

Achievements:
- By the end of the year I inherited my own challenging project. The site had a very old MCC which was to be retained and adapted and there were logistical issues to be solved whilst keeping the project cost to a minimum.
- I gained a basic understanding of MCC's, PLC's, Telemetry, actuators, flow meters and submersible pumping equipment.
- I was able to carry out cable sizing calculations using Amtech software.
- I carried out pump selection using Flygt software packages.

As a result of this I was sponsored through my final year of university and offered a graduate position with the company.

• A methodical and determined worker, keen to develop as a Project Planner under different forms of contract and gaining exposure in varying work environments.
• P102 and P106 certified in Primavera P6.
• Previous undergraduate and postgraduate experience as an M&E Engineer and Project Engineer.
