I have recently completed a series of migrations of Windows 2008R2 servers onto more modern versions of Windows Server - supporting a variety of business applications, as well as just being infrastructure for small LAN.

My big project for the year is probably to master some backup software - very different from the stuff I used to support while at HP.  The basic function is of course the same - but the details differ substantially.

Networking (LAN) and SAN and Storage.  Good stuff.

I first became a CISSP in 2008, chasing a high dollar certification. I let it lapse by 2011, as opportunities did not fit my geographic availability.

In 2015, upon leaving the Army, Raytheon gave me an opportunity to become an ISSO and focus on compliance issues, rather than strictly IT.

In 2018 I moved out of LA to a small site - where I got a much more dynamic and holistic view of compliance.  I have also enjoyed a deeper engagement with IT issues, enabling me to once again claim some technical prowess.

I will drop some key words for the search engines out there:

I have recently used Cisco IOS skills for small switches. I have trained others in those skills.

I have recently used Linux skills (basic stuff) around Red Hat (RHEL 6.10) and high performance computing, networking, and clustering.

Of course I must mention Windows 10, Server 2016, and active directory (AD). As an ISSO I am mostly a spectator, of course.

And then there is the SIEM called Splunk. It is tremendously capable, but I see it as an enterprise tool, that I must use on a LAN.

I also now have some experience with the Nessus suite. This is another tremendously powerful enterprise tool, that only poorly fits my need - I am applying it at a LAN scale.

Someone else does the systems administration... I observe, make note, coordinate, collaborate, follow up, report, and so on.

I look forward in 2020 to engaging compliance from a broader business and technical perspective.

One of my favorite thought expiriments: explore the security and performance issues around a small device like a Raspberry Pi.  In an RMF world, we try to build in enough security to defend the system, while enabling a rational and economic level of use. So for a given use case, how can I defend the device, what losses will I accept, and at what price?

My goals include a return to Northern California, and embarking on a technical (STEM) master's degree of some sort.  Systems Engineering, EE, and Computer Science all beckon.

I am seeking employment in a computer related field that integrates my security, networking, and systems administration experience.

I first passed the CISSP test in 2008.  I passed the CISSP-ISSAP exam in September 2020, and in 2021 - I am officially a CISSP-ISSAP.
