It was actually the best title I could have ever asked for, but it didn’t come with a raise or stock options or any other material reward like I had sought when I graduated from college. The title was “dad,” and it came with many, many wonderful perks and the promise of a lifetime of guaranteed benefits. One of those perks has been the opportunity to sit down with my daughter to read books that capture her imagination, that help her see possibilities she hadn’t even thought of, and many even inspired her into action. They are full of illustrations that bring the stories to life and help her make sense of the narrative. The pictures further engage her and help her to “see” the story being told. Some of the stories take her back in time, some help her understand the present, and others give her a glimpse into the future. I am not a children’s author, but I tell stories, I just don’t use letters. I fell in love with numbers as far back as I can remember. That took me to a degree in finance, but the repetitive work of that realm didn’t really suit me. What I wanted to do was show others what I had been able to see all along—that numbers tell a story. I found that I have a knack for telling stories with data that spark an immediate understanding in others. My “data” stories help stakeholders see the past, the present, and the future clearly. They help them imagine what is possible and give them actionable insights. Through visualization, I take them across the bridge from bits and bytes to a compelling and comprehensible narrative. In the end, compelling stories connect the data to the business in a way that I always knew they could. I’ve learned a lot since becoming a dad, and I think my own number stories and pictures may have gotten even better as I came to see the power of stories through my daughter's eyes.
