It’s 11:09pm on a Saturday night and I’m making a call-out to connect with someone about this new branch of our company we’ve been building in stealth.

Last month, I shared that our goal is to acquire and build freelance writer job boards - with the vision of creating more opportunities for writers.

We’re fortunate to have had incredible conversations, over this past month, with reputable freelance writers building in this space, who are ready for their next rodeo. As well as the opportunity to brainstorm internally on GTM tactics to get this across as many desks as possible, as soon as our first public announcement and launch. 

Our biggest bottleneck right now, in all transparency, is finding our “1–10” hire - someone who’s an execution machine and thrives on building from zero.

I’m looking for someone who would trade their Saturday night plans to help build this mission:

• Ideally based in Montreal (Canada if not)

One example: they built one of the world’s fastest-growing companies to unicorn status in under a year - only to be crushed back to zero by the largest incumbent in their space.

Over the past month, I put out 2 hiring posts for account managers and content writers, and received 600+ inbound applications. 

We disqualified more than 80% without even skimming through the full application. 

The market is as competitive as ever. If I were applying for a freelance writing role today, here’s exactly what I would do to stand out:

1. Actually read the qualifications.

It surprised me how many people didn’t. The requirements weren’t obscure. I mentioned that we are location-based, capacity-based, and culture-based. 

The first step in showing that you give a sh*t is ensuring that the basic criteria are met. 

2. Personalize your application.

A generic cover letter is the fastest way to get skipped. I would ensure relevance - presenting a parallel piece of your work as an example. 

3. Show proof, to de-risk the decision.

Link to samples, share metrics, show testimonials. De-risk the potential doubt which the hiring manager/decision maker will be faced with. Understand that in a decent job listing, they will be sifting through hundreds, if not thousands of application. 

The first step is auto-disqualifying those that aren’t “obvious”. 

The best applications remove doubt.

4. Please get the decision maker’s name right:

OpenAI is hiring for storytelling and communications roles, and paying almost $400K a year. The irony is perfect.

Everyone uses ChatGPT to write the exact type of content OpenAI now needs humans to create. 

Draft emails, social media posts, marketing copy, all the stuff they are posting job descriptions for.

Two things are happening at the same time. The value of authentic storytelling keeps rising while AI makes generic content, well, more generic.
 
Companies that can tell compelling stories about their products, vision, and impact will win. The platforms do not matter - TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, your own site. 

What matters is the ability to connect with people through narrative.

But here is the catch. AI can generate infinite amounts of content, but cannot create a genuine connection. 

It can mimic tone and style, but cannot share real experiences or build an authentic community.

OpenAI hiring human storytellers while their product replaces human writers reveals the paradox. 

The better AI gets at producing content, the more valuable the human perspective becomes.

The companies winning at lead generation and community building are not using AI to replace their communications, but to handle the boring stuff so humans can focus on the stories that actually matter.

This creates a weird dynamic. AI democratizes basic content creation but increases the premium for authentic voice and genuine insight.

The jobs getting posted are not for people who can write. They are for people who can think, connect, and communicate ideas that matter.

Product, feature, and company launches shouldn’t follow the traditional playbook anymore. Here’s the breakdown of the old VS. new approach: 

The old approach: publishing a press release and hoping it lands, just doesn’t move the needle like it used to (!!!)

This outdated PR pump has proven to be significantly less impactful today. 

If I were to be launching a product, feature, or even announcing a fundraise in the next 90 days, here’s how I would approach it:

1. Start by creating a monthly company update email list, including investors, advisors, mentors, past and current clients.

This is something we’re actively building out and have been pushing behind-the-scenes for the past 2 months. Easily the highest-yielding ROI activity since the founding of our company. Takes ~an hour a month. (feel free to DM if you’d like to check out what ours looks like!)

2. Leverage the above list to push social post announcements - drumming up engagement just as the post(s) go live. 

What this means in practice is notify the network roughly a week prior about the upcoming announcement. Notify them on the exact time and profile that it will be shared on/from. 

3. The day of, not only should the CEO be sharing the announcement, but also the rest of the team. Bonus if the investors and early customers can chime in. (As a case study, Clarify, Superpower, Unify, Pylon do this quite well when announcing their company milestones). 

4. Create a series of follow-on social posts which come after that media run, capitalizing on the momentum. Some ideas:

(A) Talk about the journey of building (the good, bad …)

(B) Talk about why you built it (the company, feature, product …)

(C) Talk about why you decided to build it NOW (why was this relevant and timely at this particular instance)

…

From there, then move into media placement to amplify. I wouldn’t do it the other way around.

I don’t always get to use the products of the executives we support on LinkedIn. Most of the time, we’re not the ICP, or we already have a stack in place. But Clarify is different.

This partnership started on the content side, but it’s expanded in a way I didn’t fully expect. We’ve become not just their storytellers on LinkedIn, but also power users of their product. 

That’s the best-case scenario: when you can believe in the product as much as the people behind it.

Working with Chris and the Clarify executive team has been an absolute honour and privilege. 

In short, they’re building an autonomous CRM (CRM, call recording + transcription, unified meet notes and context, deal tracking …) What they’ve built pulls together multiple tools into one place - and the feature I find myself using the most is their daily brief. Every morning I can see exactly who I’m meeting with, plus context from every past interaction: emails, calls, even LinkedIn DMs. It’s like my memory, extended.

My philosophy on tools is simple: if it takes more time to use the product than the problem it’s solving, it’s not worth it. 

I’d hate for this post to sound like an ad, but I just wanted this to surface my appreciation for what they’re building, knowing many of whom who will be reading this post would be happy users.
