Any time I ask a group to raise your hand if you want to be successful, how many people in the group raise their hand?

Every person.
The entire group.

That's guaranteed.

I was fishing in northern Wisconsin.
It was a small creek beneath a dam.
There was an older guy next to me fishing.

I'm very outgoing.
I was trying to get him to talk.
He would take a drag of his cig and not respond.

Definitely a man of few words.
I wasn't catching any fish that day.
He kept reeling in monster after monster.

Massive walleyes.
Really nice-sized panfish.
With every amazing fish, he threw it back.

I couldn’t figure out what was going on.

I kept trying to talk to him.

He wouldn't engage.

I continued to watch him throw massive fish back.

My frustration with not knowing was killing me.

It was time to get answers.

I said, "Look, my man, I need to know what's going on."

He looked at me and took a drag of his cig.

He said, "I only have a 9-inch frying pan."

My mind was blown.
I viewed success as a massive fish.
He viewed success as a fish he could cook.

Everybody wants success.
Many never find success.
Why's it so elusive?

The old man had a clear definition.

Growing up as a kid, we didn't have much.

My parents were both social workers.

We always had enough.

As a child, my parents ran group homes.

24/7, my parents were working with kids.

We lived in a home with juvenile delinquents.

This opened my eyes to the power of human connection.

These kids were living rough lives due to no connection.

They did anything to get attention.

My parents were busy keeping my foster brothers out of jail.

I learned a ton living in a group home.
It shaped my early years.
It was incredible.

My dad and I are wildly different in so many ways.

He's a socialist.
→ I love capitalism.

He's smaller in size.
→ I'm a massive human being.

He doesn't like football.
→ I love football.

He pays no attention to fashion.
→ I love fashion and current trends.

He is living his dream on a farm in rural Wisconsin.
 → I've  never liked living the rural life.

We are different in so many ways.

But...

My dad is the most influential person in my life.

Because...

He gave me the greatest gift anyone can give a person.

He's always there for me.

He believed in me.

Cheering me on.
Challenging me.
Pushing me.

He's the first person I call when I'm in trouble.

He's the first person I call when I'm successful.

He gives the best advice.

He showed me the most powerful thing a person can tell somebody.

Why does my boss sound so different when speaking to a group? It's so awkward...

I had a boss who was a completely different person when speaking to a group.

They changed their...

It was tough to watch.
It was similar to a car accident.

My 2-year-old daughter was crying so hard she was shaking. I wasn't sure I had ever seen her this scared.

We were at a meet-the-Easter-bunny event, and Kenny was not having it.

She wouldn’t go near the Easter Bunny at all.

I was offering her encouragement.
I was offering support.
No chance.

I took her up to the Easter Bunny with me.
Kenny started shaking.
She was crying.

It wasn't good.

That was last year.
This year was way different.
Kenny was excited and posed for pictures.

This new generation is so different. Why are they so soft?

I hear this all the time.
The younger people are different.
They don't have the same values.

There are 4 generations in the workplace today:

Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z.
