Who we are is how we lead. If your business or team isn’t performing the way you’d like, it might be time to look at yourself. Leaders aren’t taught that in business school. It’s all about performance, projections, and enforcing the mule to carry the load. It’s easy to make an evaluation of systems and workers and say, “Joe isn’t doing his job right. Joe is the weak link. Get rid of Joe.” But it might not be Joe. It might be you. Joe has a set of innate skills that nobody else has, just as any strategic system. Maybe the problem is that you haven’t taken the time to tap into them yet. It takes a strong person to lead from a place of compassion and care. If you’re thinking, “I don’t have time to be compassionate and caring. I have a business to run,” then show me your numbers. I’ll bet they aren’t anywhere close to where they could be. Or, you might be crushing it in your numbers, and yet they are still diminished by a lack of open-heartedness and personal connection. Even if things are good, they could always be even better. When people feel seen and their innate being is validated, they produce stronger results, because they bring their entire being into their work, rather than just operating other people’s systems so they can merely get a paycheck. Leaders can’t bring their team into a place of total empowerment until they learn compassion and care, starting with themselves. You have to be able to ask yourself with compassion and non-judgment why you can’t lead your team with an open heart, why you have a hard time seeing them, why their subservience trumps their being, and what’s creating so much fear in bridging humanity and interpersonal relationships. This is 2022. We can’t afford to grind like we once did, leaving the heart of our workers in the dust. We need community, compassion, and care. Leaders: Start with yourself first.
