Better Place Forests is creating North America’s first spreading forests for families who choose cremation. We support the growing majority of people who choose cremation at the end of their lives, but have no beautiful, protected and private place to return their ashes to the earth. Instead of a tombstone, Better Place Forests incorporates ashes into the soil of a tree.

I'm the founder of a food broker firm. I identify emerging food brands and very rapidly sell those product lines to thousands of gourmet markets, grocery stores, gift stores, hotels, online retailers, and catalog companies. One focus is premium foods from California.

As a "Pioneering Food Broker", I usually choose product lines that are best-kept secrets with very little wholesale presence, and get them onto store shelves everywhere, including retail chains like Whole Foods, Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table, Cost Plus, etc. I also sell products to corporate gift and special event customers. When my clients are ready to grow, I negotiate with, manage, and activate distributors.

✨ How did I create an AI tool that could help train hotline or call operators before disasters, leading them to help more people during emergencies? 

In late March, I found myself with friend Sheri Cardo at a talk at Golden Gate University in San Francisco listening to a panel of AI experts, including Matt Burton of SAVANT-AI™, Mallory Cloutier of Highwire, Sunil Rajaraman of Hamlet, and Warner Johnston.

I had been dabbling in AI tools but felt too overwhelmed to move forward. 

I connected with Matt on LinkedIn, and he informed me about the four-week AI Bootcamp course he was leading. 

I enrolled in the course with a purpose: to create an AI tool to help train hotline operators.

I was nervous and intimidated - not knowing what to expect or how anything in AI really worked. I just had an idea and I wanted to help others. 

Information about AI tools evolves so quickly that the learning curve can be a bit steep for someone who doesn’t have the time to invest in their own research. 

That’s why this course was different for me. 

It wasn’t about the certification or even necessarily the information in the course—it was the community.

Let me share that again. It was the community.

Listening to inspiring guest speakers like Suzanne Welker Jurgens, Karl Yeh, Noah Cheyer, Sara Davison, and Tyler Fisk, who demonstrated their own projects and ideas, I learned so much - especially being able to ask questions and connect. 

I felt encouraged and supported by our community of cohorts like Vix Joyce, Mig Ponce, Joyce Tang, Aaron Shepard, Alison Peek, Andrea Rasmussen, Claire Jones, Estrada Bernard, Iris Rogers, Jacqueline Claudia, Jeffrey Colpitts, Joyce Guan West, Karen Royer, Kelvin Chan, @LauraHerbert, and more after creating small 3-step or 5-step projects, initiated by Matt. 

The course work was hands-on, and the feedback and questions from the group helped me gain the confidence I needed to build the AI tool in week 2. 

Yes, week 2.

By week 3, I began building out a business model based on the AI tool. 

By week 4, I’m working on demonstrations and possibly working out the details for several new contracts. This could mean I'm launching a new business.
