It's often stated that Gen-Z entrepreneurs lack patience and grit, favoring quick flips over sustained growth, and frequently that observation isn’t just a generational gripe. However, I reckon it's a reflection of deeper economic and cultural shifts that the startup survival data subtly underscores. The fact that only about half of startups survive five years, and only a third reach a decade, is not new, but the recent cohorts’ performance during a volatile economic period is telling. It reveals a generation navigating unprecedented uncertainty and structural challenges, often without the luxury of long-term runway that previous generations might have had.

Startups in high-churn sectors like technology face relentless innovation races and winner-take-all dynamics. It's an environment that incentivizes rapid iteration, quick exits, and leveraging borrowed capital rather than grinding slowly to build something enduring. The entire agile movement, which I despise for reasons stated regularly in my posts, has sprung from that. What sticks? Agriculture, utilities, and add-value services have the best survival rates, highlighting that stability and regulatory barriers remain key to longevity, not digital-first Gen-Z ventures with lofty dreams about another finger-swiping app.

The problem I see is that the prevailing strategy for quick flips and early exits will dramatically impact the innovation pipeline, employee career development, and long-term value creation. The risk is a cycle of short-lived ventures that prioritize immediate returns over meaningful impact, ultimately eroding trust among investors, customers, and talent. All of this in the middle of a brewing AI storm!

Note the year 2015, when Germany single-handedly opened its borders against the prevailing Dublin agreement, backed by "migration experts" who proclaimed that "in ten years we'll be grateful for Chancellor Merkel."

The distortion lies in what’s conveniently celebrated versus what’s quietly ignored. Inflating public spending might pad short-term growth figures, but pretending this compensates for the structural decay in private investment is pure wishful thinking. It’s the macroeconomic equivalent of putting a fresh coat of paint on a crumbling facade: impressive at first glance, but it does nothing to shore up the foundation.

Since the 2008 financial crisis, banks have been burdened with stricter capital and liquidity requirements, along with tougher borrower scrutiny. This regulatory tightening made traditional lending more complex and costly, pushing many borrowers toward private credit, those non-bank institutions often dubbed the shadow banking sector, resulting in private credit’s growth from around $500 billion to $3 trillion in assets under management, fueled by firms like KKR and Apollo.

As somebody who's been through the DotCom Bubble, the Neuer Markt and AIM crash, the Lehman crisis, to name but a few financial disasters I've experienced first hand, the inconvenient truth I've learned is that banks don’t fail because of regulation, but because they simply make bad loans due to mainly two factors: stupidity and greed! And private credit, particularly in the TIME sector where I've been prowling for the last three decades, is sitting on a precarious pile of such loans. Many of these credits are extended based on overly optimistic forecasts — “hockey stick" projections, as I call them — that assume explosive growth. Growth that rarely materializes, especially in trendy startups that struggle to generate sustainable revenue above rising costs.

Recent data from S&P Global highlights a growing wave of defaults in private credit portfolios tied to these buzzword-driven industries. The relaxed oversight on private lenders hasn’t eliminated risk; it’s concentrated it in places where fiduciary discipline is weaker and enthusiasm for innovation blinds caution. In my little control room, the red lights are blinking wildly, and I reckon the sector is primed for a painful correction that could ripple through the wider financial system; Lehman will be labeled "peanuts" for what is to come down on us. Saddle up; it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Tim Davie’s soft confession isn’t an apology, it’s an attempt to paper over what was effectively manufactured news; editing a president’s words to change meaning isn’t a “mistake,” it’s manipulation, and that crosses from sloppy journalism into propaganda. 

If the BBC truly wants to fight for journalism it should own the breach, fire whoever greenlit the deceptive cut, and invite independent forensic review so the public can judge whether a once-respected institution has become a partisan content factory.

I'm sure those debt levers can go to "11" … drowning in liabilities louder than the alarm bells no one wants to hear. 

Celebrating growth while ignoring ballooning debt reminds me of applauding a tightrope walker for style points as they inch closer to the edge. Maybe the real skill is knowing when to turn down the volume before the whole act comes crashing down.

With a debt-to-GDP ratio of 94.7%, likely to increase dramatically in 2026, it's safe to assume that we'll not get out of this mess anymore. Time to hunker down.

The BBC is obligated to maintain editorial independence while upholding high standards of transparency and accountability in its journalism. Many of these institutions — e.g. ARD, ZDF — once bastions of impartiality, have drifted alarmingly from their core mandate of objectivity, increasingly aligning with ideological biases that undermine their credibility. 

From a holistic perspective, public broadcasters like the BBC are funded by taxpayers to serve the public interest, not to push narratives or shape opinion under the guise of reporting. If Trump’s lawsuit—centered on allegations of bias—gains traction, it will expose a systemic issue: the erosion of trust in institutions meant to be neutral arbiters of truth. I've seen firsthand how media can sway public perception, and when entities like the BBC stray into advocacy, they risk alienating vast swaths of their audience, fracturing social cohesion in an already polarized world.

The BBC’s charter explicitly demands impartiality, yet repeated accusations of slant — whether in coverage of Trump or other contentious issues — suggest a cultural shift within these organizations. Is this drift a response to competitive pressures in a fragmented media landscape, where sensationalism garners attention? Or does it reflect a deeper ideological capture, where editorial decisions are shaped by a narrow worldview disconnected from the diverse publics they serve? Either way, the implications are dire: when public broadcasters lose their neutrality, they cease to be a unifying force and instead become just another player in the culture wars.

It’s going to be a precedent set by a president.
