How it started - many moons of planning to create this feast of a journey. 

Works of Nature at ACMI follows a circular design motto where we reduced the environmental impact of the exhibition by minimising the use of new materials. We focused on reusing and recycling existing materials from ACMI’s archives and previous exhibition furniture, and optimising the durability of the components so they can be reused after the exhibition is over.

We were chuffed with the wonderful work of the ACMI curatorial and technical teams throughout this process.

With only 3 days to go before we wrap up the exhibition, we can’t wait to announce new stops for Works of Nature.

I’ll refer to it as “Crypto Commerce” 

Web3 is composable. You can build stuff using micro integrations. Now we just use ChatGPT to make a shop using Frames. 

We are one step away from a full Crypto Commerce transaction occurring in a social media feed.

The recording artist rac asked if someone could make a vinyl shop using a frame. 🫡

In addition to the simplicity of this commerce experience, the checkout runs through Coinbase. The cost per transaction is tiny compared to traditional merchant fees. 

I highlighted a few NFT focused commerce platforms earlier this year. That’s one way to leverage blockchain for ecommerce as well. It’s all converging as DAUs scale on decentralized social platforms. 

Shopify look out! Transaction fees are about to get more competitive! This will bring new commerce concepts and a new wave of platform innovation.

Apparently - if you are a parent, your cultural relevance declines more rapidly than empty nesters. 

I’m going to be part of the 1% that breaks that rule… anyway…. Who needs a ”parent tax” 😂

I found this article fascinating - essentially, we all revert to the generation of music we love and it’s typically our late teens until around 30. 

Guilty 🙋‍♀️ ( but I do have a lot of artists I love from this decade and last )

Coinbase nails it again...

There are over 10,000 red public telephone boxes in London. 

The red phone box is probably one of ( if not the ) most iconic artifacts of the U.K. brand. The Union Jack, the red bus and the red phone box. 

The London brand sells these artifacts around the world. 

One man, maintains the red phone boxes, as a volunteer 😧.

This is admirable. Also - pay the poor guy. What is our mayor thinking? 


The New Way to build real communities on social media is happening elsewhere. 

Algorithms that reward and know the cycles of successful social growth can be short lived if the incentives aren’t aligned for everyone ( brands / creators/ users ).

Misalignment creates low quality and gamification by creators. Advertising dominance also becomes a challenge to navigate. 

Human behavior is connected to incentives.

Troy (People vs. Algorithms ) wrote a thoughtful email regarding Power. 

The world is very unpredictable right now. You can see so many people trying to build one form of power or another. From the full stack entrepreneur to the side hustle creator - everyone is trying to get a grip on their future.

He lists many forms of power - none of which involve taking the corporate path, mainly because corporate loyalty is at an all time low and it’s a false sense of power in C Suite. Hopefully that will change, large companies have a long road ahead as talented graduates take ownership of their future. 

One form of Power he includes is kindness - 

“Pick the important qualities from this list: empathetic, good listener, collaborative, funny, modest, light, patient, supportive, inspiring. Get good at some of these and you don’t have to be that smart or that expert to summon more POWER. People will like working with you and will not like the idea of you not being around. Plenty of mean people have POWER. Nice and smart people are wonderfully POWERFUL.”

I loved this! We need more of this in the world.

How is BAT doing? 

What is BAT? It is the Basic Attention Token. 

Why does it matter? Cookies are on their way out? What replaces cookies? 

Signals? I am not sure that is a great solution - even if it is working for advertising companies like Meta where mobile platforms blocked data ages ago! Is it working? So far I hear - it is too expensive. I am not sure it is working but it is "part of the total media mix". Surely we can do better than this? 

NFT's replace cookies. Even if people STILL think NFTs are dead. Sorry - they are core infrastructure and you can't get rid of them. If it makes you feel better, call them smart contracts. 

What I find interesting about BAT is - it is an early case study on how to use tokens and NFTs for advertising tracking and personal data control. They have 60M monthly active users and 23M daily active users. All of those users are incentivised directly. 1.4 million content creators have registered to receive BAT payments from their audience.

Brave - the creator of BAT has partnered with numerous platforms, including Twitter, GitHub, and Vimeo, to expand the BAT ecosystem.

I am sure BAT is up because the general sentiment toward crypto and consumer crypto is positive right now. However, a market cap of $456M is pretty good for a "niche" browser and ecosystem trying to prove - that a $330 billion digital advertising industry is failing users, publishers and advertisers. 

As a very experienced advertising buyer - I agree. There is so much waste in digital advertising - and that does not include the click fraud. It is simply ineffective at scale. Yes, Brand is back. However, you still need quality reach at scale and I think that is in decline. 

So - where do we go from there. I think BAT is a great place to investigate if you want to understand where digital advertising and analytics might end up.

⚡️ Disruption in Traditional Art ⚡️

Traditional art museums and institutions have historically been the gatekeepers of artistic culture and tastemakers for what constitutes capital-A "Art."

However, the digital age has disrupted this decades-old paradigm, making space for new art forms to emerge outside the institutional embrace - from NFT artwork to generative art to immersive multimedia installations.

How traditional art institutions are embracing Digital Art ⚡️👀

Art influences a lot more technology and innovation than you think...

There are so many examples of art that explore problems, come up with an artistic solution that helps understand possible solutions without commercialising things. Creating just to explore possibilities. 

I used to say most innovation starts in finance and the adult entertainment industry. 

The more I explore art, the more I realise artists are not given enough credit from an innovation perspective. We think about art as artistic or even political. 

Here is one example ( I have a long list at this point ).

Agent Ruby - this is essentially Chat GPT in 2001. You can still converse with Agent Ruby and it was built before there was a pile of free information ( and technically IP protected information ) to aggregate, structure and build on. 

Art > Technology 
vs.
Technology > Art

The new(ish) blockchain by Coinbase - called Base is the likely catalyst for mainstream web3 adoption. They will keep iterating until the technology is invisible. Coinbase is a household name. Consumer crypto will morph into the new internet in 24 months. 

My prediction is - Base will be where media performance tracking resides ( NFTs will replace cookies soon ). 

Base will be where the next wave of social media data is aggregated. Consumers can own their data. Threads is already decentralized via Activity Pub. Yup is aggregating all text based social media. Moving your profile from place to place is happening already. 

Most new influencer incentive models / platforms will use Base ( new platforms are cutting out the middleman giving brands a fair price and influencer more money). Rug radio and others are all over this! 

Social commerce - via Frames will be on Base. NFTs will drive more social commerce than TikTok does in the long term. I believe this is likely because new subscription tools are grouped into this commerce category. Frame innovation is fast - I can pay people in one tap already. Attach a Frame to a physical purchase claim and you have ecommerce checkout in a feed ( still needs more integration work ). 

Email as a wallet - I wrote about this two years ago. Now it’s common. Many of these solutions are being built on Base and integrated into new loyalty solutions that merge CRM and NFTs. I sign people up and give them a crypto wallet without the hassle of understanding what a wallet is or even what chain it’s on. 

Media on chain is growing rapidly. Loyalty currencies that look like memecoins but have a dual use case are worth billions. I pay artists with coins in a feed already. How does that change grocery loyalty or other known loyalty mechanics? 

It’s time for the tech enabled, consumer universe to explore the Base 📣

Media incentives (tokens) are going to be everywhere by the end of 2024.

TikTok isn’t happy with their growth rate - it’s slowing. 

They are launching an app called The Coin app across Europe. 

I shared Drakula a few weeks ago ( an incentive based video Dapp ).

Warpcast is full of incentive coins right now with built in tipping and gifting mechanisms.

Get ready!
