This lesson was the hardest, darkest, scariest, personal or professional experience I’ve ever had. It was harder than when I landed an airplane on a tiny island. Scarier than when I scaled a hundred-foot cliff and darker than when I dove the ocean bottom in the black of night. 

Since 1988, I’d advised over 5,000 companies on billions of dollars in federal wins, and published my book “Government Contracts Made Easier.” I was an expert with a dirty little secret: I didn’t know how to sell. 

In 2014, the 25 years I had spent hiding that secret turned my biggest-ever contract into a nightmare. I learned that, in addition to consulting, the client expected me to make thousands of sales calls for seven different companies on federal buyers, and hundreds of introductions for them. For a whole year.

Hour after hour. Afraid of failing. Ashamed that anyone had to hear me stumble. Embarrassing, awkward, calls. Sleepless nights. 

Call by call, over that whole year, I learned the only way that people win sustainable Federal business: by making genuine human connections. 

When I did the math at the end of that year, I realized how much I had lost: if only I’d learned that sooner, I’d have earned another million dollars in my own business...and could have helped so many more companies win hundreds of millions themselves.

But the time I finished the project, something bigger had shifted for me:
