A great game can fail with the wrong price.

Here are 10 common pricing mistakes to avoid.

1. Underpricing
— Low prices can suggest your game is poor quality. While high prices can suggest high quality. 

2. Market Mismatch 
— Not aligning price with target market's buying habits and willingness to pay.

3. Ignoring Psychology
— Not using psychological pricing strategy, such as setting prices at 19.99€ vs 20€.

4. Fixed Pricing
— Not adjusting price based on market trends & feedback.

5. Complex Pricing
— Creating complicated pricing structures that confuse buyers.

6. Not Testing Pricing
— Not trying different prices to find the profitable one.

7. Ignoring Segmentation
— Not changing price for diffrent dplayed types. 

8. Stale Pricing
— Not revisiting price post-launch based on performance & feedback.

9. Mismatched Motivation
— Failing to strike a balance with prices that maintain player satisfaction.

10 Common Game Pricing Mistakes

Is making the background of your website a game necessary? Probably not... but it was totally worth it! 😅

Loot Boxes: the scum of Game Dev... or not? 

Loot Boxes are demonized; in fact, you could say there is a witch hunt against them.

But, like the awkward ginger kid in the room, they are misunderstood. Here is why...

Loot boxes leverage powerful psychological triggers. The anticipation for a reward and variability of the reward.

These mechanisms are associated with slot machines. Hence, the bad rep.

But, the same mechanisms are used in all good games, keeping players engaged and creating a sense of excitement.

Take Diablo. You are driven to find the next chest, elite, or boss. You anticipate getting something valuable and, if lucky, something extremely valuable. 

Rogue-likes do the same. At stages, you get a selection of weapons or power-ups. You are driven by anticipation and excited by the variability of what you get.

When done right, loot boxes add excitement and joy to a gaming experience.

So why the bad rep!?

As the saying goes, "Lightsabers don't kill people; the Sith do". Yes, that's a saying 😂. 

Loot Boxes are not the issue. Instead, HOW they are implemented.

For instance, setting loot boxes behind a paywall and, by design, teasing the best rewards while making them nearly impossible to get. 

This makes people spend more money, hoping to get the reward they want. Just like with slot machines.

This is why Loot Boxes have a bad rep.

Luckily, there are ethical and honest ways to use loot boxes to boost engagement, excitement, and even profit.


Here are 5 ways (good and bad) to use loot boxes:

(Unethical Way 1#) 
Loot Box reward BEHIND a paywall & low chance of the desired reward.

(Unethical Way 2#) 
Loot Box reward BEHIND a paywall & reward required to win (Pay to Win).

(Ethical Way 1#) 
First, let the player unlock the Loot Box reward then present the option to buy.

(Ethical Way 2#) 
Guarantee rewards (e.g., resources) BEHIND a paywall that the players want and are worth the price paid, with a Loot Box reward as a Bonus.

(Ethical Way 3#) 
Just give Loot Boxes with great rewards at no cost 😉.

Word of warning: 
Don't be a d#*! and tease rewards that are rarely or never delivered.

I also recommend not including anything into monetized Loot Boxes required to progress or win the game... cosmetics only.
