Not happy with the solutions presented to me, I knew there was a better way, and I was determined to find it.

After years of research and development and personal implementation in science-backed methodologies, biofeedback, and mind/body practices, my entire life, career, and health turned around for the better. As a result, I was inspired to share this with others and launched my company, Core Performance in 2003.

I have developed a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of stress and burnout. This approach doesn't rely on special diets or workouts, lengthy talk-therapy sessions, or prescription medications. Instead, it leverages the latest in technology and scientific research to help clients develop greater self-awareness and emotional self-regulation, which are key to improving their performance and overall well-being.

My coaching methodology has been successful in helping hundreds of executives achieve greater levels of success and fulfillment in their lives and careers. It has also been applied in the Department of Defense through the Stress Resilience Training System (SRTS) that I helped develop, which has been used to assist military personnel in managing stress and performing at their best in high-pressure environments.

After implementing my training, many clients report waking up happy, even on a Monday morning. They have shifted from living in anxiety to peace and finally sleeping through the night after years of wrestling with sleep.

These basketball players chose to support each other across team lines. Not because they had to. Because of who they are.

That's character.

And it's the most underrated leadership skill in the workplace.

You can teach someone strategy. You can teach technical skills. You can teach productivity systems.

But character? That's harder.

Here's what I've learned working with executives: character isn't built in workshops or written in company values posters.

Character is built in moments of stress when no one is looking.

When your competitor wins the client and you congratulate them instead of talking behind their back.

When your direct report is struggling and you help them succeed instead of replacing them.

Leaders don't foster character by talking about it. They foster it by modeling it under pressure.

When leaders regulate their own stress response, they create psychological safety for their teams.

Research shows that teams with high psychological safety are 27% more likely to report high performance (NFP Research, 2025).

But psychological safety doesn't come from policies. It comes from character.

It comes from leaders who stay calm when things go wrong. Who support instead of blame. Who lift people up even when it's inconvenient.

Your team doesn't just watch what you say. They watch how you regulate yourself when the pressure is on.

Do you stay supportive when someone fails? Or do you react with anger?

Do you extend grace when someone is struggling? Or do you withdraw it?

Do you help people up when they're down? Or do you step over them?

Character is everything because your internal state determines your actions.

The executives I work with train themselves to regulate under pressure so they can show up with integrity when it matters most.

This is why so many high performers burn out…

By constantly relying on new and better motivation over and over again, you neglect the discipline needed to succeed.

They chase the next surge of motivation. The adrenaline rush of a new challenge.

It works. For a while.

Then the motivation fades. And they're left wondering why they can't sustain what they started.

A study published in Neuron found that motivation activates the brain's reward system, the ventral striatum, which releases dopamine. It feels good. It creates excitement.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘆. 𝗜𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵.

Discipline, on the other hand, is built in the prefrontal cortex through repetition. It doesn't rely on feeling good. It relies on neural pathways that make the action automatic.

Dr. Wendy Wood, a behavioral scientist at USC, found that 43% of what we do every day is driven by habit, not conscious decision.

That grizzled vet 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗛𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀.

𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

This is why executives who chase motivation cycles through burnout, fatigue, and eventually give up.

They're constantly starting over. Constantly needing a new reason. Constantly waiting to feel ready. Sound familiar?

Your circle of friends and coworkers affects your health more than your gym membership. Sound dramatic?

It’s backed by decades of research.

A 2025 Cornell study found that people with strong, sustained social support actually age slower at the cellular level.

Their biological clocks ticked slower.
Their bodies showed less chronic inflammation.
Their mental health was more stable and resilient.

Here’s why:
Your brain doesn’t separate emotional pain from physical pain.
When you feel excluded, judged, or unsupported, it activates the same threat centers in the brain that process actual physical injury.

But the opposite is also true.
Supportive environments calm the brain and reduce stress at a neurological level.

 "It's yours"
 "Come on"

The encouragement of his team moved him out of fear and into action.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻:

This is exactly what happens inside your workplace.

Your team members are constantly scanning their environment for cues of threat or safety.

A dismissive tone, silence after speaking up, or being overlooked for a contribution can trigger the same stress response as a physical threat.

On the other hand, a well-timed word of encouragement, appreciation, or support can reverse it instantly.

Supported people think more clearly, sleep better, make stronger decisions, and stay longer.

Teams that lack psychological safety and connection may still show up. But they won’t show up at their best.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆:
Start your next team meeting with a "peer highlight" moment.
Ask each person to name one specific way a teammate helped them recently.

This creates a loop of positive reinforcement that activates safety, engagement, and trust.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺?

The person you're underestimating right now might be the one who has exactly what you need.

And the lesson hits hard: we judge books by their covers. And we can miss everything that matters.

As a leader, here's what you lose when you assume:

 - You discount team members because they don't fit your image of "executive material."
 - You dismiss ideas because they come from someone junior, quiet, or different from you.
 - You overlook talent because it doesn't look like what you think high performance looks like.

And in doing that, you miss the innovation, the truth, and the solutions sitting right in front of you.

The Bible is full of stories like this. Lowly people speaking truth to power.
 - David, a shepherd boy, defeats Goliath when trained warriors wouldn't step forward.
 - Moses, who stuttered, becomes the voice that frees a nation.
 - Esther, an orphan, saves her people from genocide.
 - Ruth, a foreigner, becomes the great-grandmother of kings.

The pattern is clear: God uses the overlooked, the underestimated, the dismissed to do what the "qualified" couldn't.

Here's what great leaders understand:

 - The best idea in the room might come from the person who's never spoken up before.
 - The next leader on your team might be someone you've been overlooking because they don't look or sound like you.
 - That arm wrestler didn't need approval. He had strength the cocky opponent never saw coming.

And as a leader, how many times have you been that cocky opponent?

How many times have you underestimated someone because they didn't match your mental model of competence?

How many voices have you dismissed because they didn't sound like what you expected wisdom to sound like?

You can't argue facts. And the fact is: the people you're overlooking might be carrying exactly what your team needs.

Your job as a leader isn't to decide who's capable. It's to create space for everyone to show you.

Leadership can be exhausting. It requires you to be confident and humble. And at the same time, strong and vulnerable, fast and patient. No wonder it can be hard.

You need confidence to make decisions. But arrogance kills learning and credibility.

Your team needs empathy and support. But clarity matters too, even when the truth stings.

You need input to make informed choices. But when time is short, you have to decide and move.

Here's what makes this even harder: these aren't either-or choices. They're 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵-𝗮𝗻𝗱 requirements.

The solution isn't picking one side. It's developing the capacity to regulate yourself enough to know which truth the moment requires.

When your internal state is dysregulated, you can default to extremes.

Stress pushes you toward rigid control instead of empowered accountability.

Fear makes you rush decisions instead of building momentum with patience.

Exhaustion turns optimism into blind spots instead of realistic hope.

Research shows that leaders under chronic stress have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for complex decision-making and holding nuanced perspectives (American Heart Association, 2021).

But when you can regulate your stress response, you gain access to nuance.

You can project confidence while staying curious about what you don't know.

You can be transparent about challenges while protecting information that would create unnecessary alarm.

You can move with speed when it's time to act and practice patience when the situation isn't ready.

Resilience training is expanding your capacity to hold complexity.

Train your internal state, and you unlock the ability to navigate the gray.

Leadership can be hard. But it gets easier when you stop fighting the contradictions and start training yourself to hold both truths.

Here's the one thing you get to choose that impacts your entire life…

You don't decide how your story begins.

But you do decide how it ends.

Here's what science tells us about that choice:

The only things we can control are how we react to what happens and the meaning we assign to it.

Your reaction can be fleeting. Anger in the moment. Fear when it happens. Sadness that passes.

But the meaning you give it? That can last a lifetime.

A study in Psychological Science found that the stories we tell ourselves about our experiences shape our emotional health more than the experiences themselves.

It's not what happened. It's what you decided it meant about you.

Your head creates the story. "This happened because I'm not enough." "I can't trust anyone." "I'll never be successful."

That story triggers an emotion in your heart. Shame. Fear. Hopelessness.

That emotion creates a physiological response in your body. Tension. Shallow breathing. Elevated cortisol.

And that physical state reinforces the story in your head. "See? I feel terrible. The story must be true."

It's a cycle. And it can prolong your discomfort and pain for years.

Here’s how to break the cycle:

Notice the story you're telling. What meaning have you assigned to what happened? Write it down. Get it out of your head.


Regulate your body. Your physiology is keeping the story alive. Deep breathing. Movement. Shift your state so your body stops confirming the narrative.

Rewrite the meaning. Not to gaslight yourself. But to ask: What if this experience taught me resilience instead of proving I'm broken? What if it made me stronger, not smaller?

You don't decide how your story begins.

But you decide what it means. And that meaning shapes everything that comes next.

You can't lead effectively if your body is stuck in threat mode.

Here's how to bulletproof your stress response.

Most executives focus on strategy, communication, and productivity. But none of that matters if your body can't handle the stress.

Improving your capacity to regulate stress involves optimizing your body's ability to handle pressure, regulate itself, and repair.

And this is all backed by science. Here's what the research says.

A study published in Psychosomatic Medicine found that chronic inflammation is directly linked to heightened stress reactivity and impaired emotional regulation. Translation: if your body is inflamed, you can't regulate under pressure no matter how hard you try.

That cold shower you've been avoiding? It's not a biohack. It's vagal nerve activation that literally changes your physiological state.

You think you're anxious about the presentation. Your body is anxious because you had coffee and a muffin for breakfast.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that leaders who sleep less than 6 hours show a 60% reduction in emotional regulation capacity the next day.

You're not making bad decisions because of pressure. You're making them because your prefrontal cortex is offline from sleep deprivation.

And, the author of The Body Keeps the Score, states: "Trauma and chronic stress are stored in the body, not just the mind. You have to address the physiology to change the psychology."

All those meetings where you felt on edge? That wasn't the content. That was your dysregulated body perceiving threat.

Here's the bottom line:

Executive performance isn't about working harder or thinking better. It's about giving your body the physiological resources it needs to regulate under pressure.

Your leadership capacity is limited by your body's capacity. Build the foundation first.

That exhaustion you feel at the end of the day?
It’s not from what you did.
It’s from what drained you while you did it.

It’s the 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘴.

Here’s what quietly drains your energy without you noticing:

 - Ruminating over that one conversation
 - Replaying how you should’ve worded the email
 - Worrying about a decision that’s already been made
 - Mentally solving a problem that isn’t even yours to fix

Each of these pulls you out of center.
And when you’re uncentered, everything takes more energy.

Here’s the science: Your body spends energy on everything you give attention to—even your thoughts.
When you dwell, worry, or loop scenarios, your nervous system interprets it as a real-time threat. That activates the stress response—and stress burns energy.

So by the end of the day, you’re drained. Not because you did too much—but because you gave away energy to thoughts that didn’t deserve it.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸?

1. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 what thoughts are draining you.
Write them down. Awareness is the first regulation.

2. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 if the thought deserves energy right now.
Can you act on it? If yes—do it. If no—release it.

3. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 your focus to what actually matters.
Strategic thinking. Creative flow. Building vision. Leading your team.

Because you 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘶p, but you can choose which ones get your energy.

When you’re 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱, you have energy for what matters.
When you’re 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱, everything drains you.

What mindset are you ready to flip?

Trust isn't built by having all the answers.

Look at those phrases in the graphic. Every single one requires you to do something uncomfortable:

 - Admit you were wrong.
 - Say you don't know.
 - Disagree openly.
 - Set boundaries on what you can commit to.

When your stress response is activated, your brain goes into self-protection mode.

Your prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for thoughtful communication and nuanced thinking, gets overridden by your threat response.

You become defensive instead of accountable.

You rush to answer instead of pausing to think.

You avoid uncomfortable truths instead of being transparent.

You justify instead of owning mistakes.

Research shows that leaders under chronic stress have reduced prefrontal cortex activity, the exact brain region needed for integrity-based communication (American Heart Association, 2021).

You can't think your way into speaking with integrity when your body is in threat mode.

Here's what changes everything:

When you train your stress response to stay regulated under pressure, you create the physiological space to choose integrity.

You can say "I was wrong" without your ego taking over.

You can say "I need to think about this" without feeling like you're losing credibility.

You can disagree respectfully without getting defensive.

You can admit you don't know without spiraling into inadequacy.

The gap between knowing you should speak with integrity and actually doing it? That's internal self-regulation.

Every phrase in that graphic requires you to override a threat response:

The urge to protect your image when you make a mistake.

The pressure to have an immediate answer when you don't know.

The discomfort of setting honest boundaries instead of over-committing.

Leaders who consistently speak with integrity have trained their internal state to stay calm enough to choose honesty over self-protection.

Your team doesn't need you to be perfect. They need you to be regulated enough to be honest.

You've heard "iron sharpens iron" and "you become like the five people you hang around." Now here's the science behind why that's actually true.

The spinning tops aren’t a metaphor. That's physics. And it's exactly what happens in your brain.

A study published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience found that our brains have mirror neurons that fire both when we perform an action and when we observe someone else performing it.

Your brain literally mimics the people around you at a neural level.

Research from Harvard Business School showed that emotions are contagious in groups. If you're surrounded by calm, regulated people, your stress levels decrease. If you're surrounded by anxious, reactive people, your cortisol rises even if nothing is happening to you directly.

Dr. Nicholas Christakis from Yale found that behaviors spread through social networks up to three degrees of separation. Your friend's friend's friend affects your behavior.

Not through advice. Through proximity.

This is why it's critical to be around people who believe in you more than you believe in yourself.

Their belief creates a physiological state in your body that makes achievement possible.

When you're around people operating at a higher level, your brain starts to mirror their regulation, their confidence, their capacity.

You don't consciously decide to change. Your nervous system adapts to match the environment.

If you're surrounded by people who are regulated, growing, and operating from abundance, your brain mirrors that.

As a leader, you can have all the discipline, all the goals, all the strategy in the world. But if your environment is pulling you down, you're fighting an uphill battle.

Your circle isn't just for networking or support. It's for your neural regulation.

Audit your circle. Are they spinning faster than you? Or are you the one trying to pull everyone else forward?

But God put something inside you that doesn’t depend on circumstances.

When your heart comes into coherence, your brain follows.

When your thoughts align with truth, your entire environment begins to change.

Your brain doesn’t know the difference between real and imagined. That’s something elite athletes and leaders have realized is a superpower.

In this video, you can see it clearly. These athletes aren’t just warming up their bodies. They’re rehearsing the race in their minds—every stride, every breath, every finish.

Before the starting gun ever fires, their brains have already run the full race.

Michael Phelps did the same. He didn’t just prepare for the perfect race. He mentally rehearsed failure. He practiced swimming with his goggles filled with water so he could count his strokes and stay composed no matter what.

When that exact scenario happened during the 2008 Olympics, he executed flawlessly and won gold.

That is the power of mental rehearsal. That is the science of neuroplasticity in action.

Dr. Guang Yue at the Cleveland Clinic found that people who mentally practiced lifting weights increased their strength by 13.5 percent without ever picking up a dumbbell.

Your brain wires through repetition, whether the experience is real or imagined.

So how does this apply to leadership?

Want to lead calmly under pressure? Practice being calm when there is none. Breathe like a calm leader. Speak like one. Stand like one.

Want to speak with clarity and confidence? Visualize the moment. Hear yourself. Feel it until your body believes it.

Want to lead a high-performing team? Mentally embody the identity of someone who already does and show up that way.

This is how we become the vision of who we choose to be. And it starts in the present moment.

Because your brain is always recording. Train it with intention.

“𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.” We all say it. But what if it’s not just about time?

What if it’s about commitment?

We make time for what we’re truly committed to, consciously or not. So when we feel like we don’t have time, it may not be about the hours in the day. It may be about what we’re unconsciously committed to:

 - Staying in motion because stillness feels unsafe.
 - Responding to every demand because we fear letting someone down.
 - Living in urgency because we’ve equated stress with value.

When we live in stress, we live in the past. And when the body is stuck in the past, the future is just more of the same.

We repeat what we don't repair.

So when you hear yourself say, “I don’t have enough time,” do this:

𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲.
𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁.
𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀.

Breathe in slowly through your nose, imagining your breath flowing in and out of your heart or chest area. Breathe a little deeper and slower than usual.

𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲.
𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲.

Repeat this 10 times.

This simple practice helps shift your body out of a reactive state and into 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀, the place where presence lives.

Because presence requires one thing: 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆.

And from that state, you can ask the real question:
What am I actually committed to right now?

Is it clarity? Peace? Connection?
Or is it control, busyness, proving, avoiding?

You don’t need more hours in the day.
You need fewer moments spent in patterns that no longer serve you.

One of my clients, Michael, a veteran and New York City SWAT officer told me, “I used to come home and still be at war in my head. Now, I’m here. My kids feel it. My wife feels it. I feel it.”

Time isn’t the issue.
𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀.
And presence starts with a choice.

Anxiety isn't just in your head.

It's in your body, your thoughts, and your emotions all at once.

Physical symptoms: Dizziness. Sweating. Muscle tension. Shakiness.

Mental symptoms: Overthinking. Feeling overwhelmed. Negative thoughts.

Emotional symptoms: Irritated. Crying. Guilt. Depressed. Exhaustion. Impatience. Anger.

Here's what most people don't understand about anxiety:

Your thoughts trigger your emotions, which trigger your body.

It's not three separate problems. It's one cascading response.

You have a thought: "I'm not prepared for this meeting."

That thought triggers an emotion: fear, inadequacy.

That emotion triggers your body: heart racing, sweating, muscle tension.

And then your body feeds back to your brain: "Something is wrong. There's a threat."

Which creates more anxious thoughts. Which creates more emotional distress. Which creates more physical symptoms.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽.

And here's the problem: you can't think your way out of a stress response your body is running.

Because logic lives in your prefrontal cortex. But anxiety lives in your autonomic stress response.

You have to train the body to shift out of threat mode.

When you regulate your internal state, the physical symptoms calm down. When the body calms, the thoughts quiet. When the thoughts quiet, the emotions stabilize.

You break the loop by training the stress response itself.

Not by managing thoughts. Not by pushing through. By regulating the physiological state that's driving all three systems.

Jesus promised us His peace (John 14:27). So why are so many of us walking around chronically stressed, anxious, and reactive?

Peace isn't just spiritual magic; it's neurological regulation. God designed your body.

You don't have to choose between science and faith. God is the author of both. He wired your brain to heal, to renew, and to operate in His peace. It’s time to use the hardware He gave you to experience the promises He made you.

The people carrying the heaviest burdens often wear the brightest smiles.

The weight of unspoken exhaustion, emotional suppression, and performance pressure builds over time and it will find a way out.

Often through burnout, anxiety, or depression.

During the holidays, mental health issues increase by up to 30%, yet fewer seek help due to pressure to appear joyful and grateful.

High performers, especially, are trained to suppress stress and maintain a positive facade, but this unspoken exhaustion and pressure will inevitably lead to burnout, anxiety, or depression.

That's exactly what happened to Jim, a senior financial advisor and executive coach.

He had years of experience in personal development, meditation, and coaching but was still silently battling depression and low energy.
