👉 But we can’t fix it when companies hoard data like my kid hoards Barbies. 


What if companies weren’t allowed to hang to data (like my social security number) for, oh, 4+ years after I switched cell phone providers? 

Smart laws could make this illegal.

While we’re at it:

Smart laws could also look like our minor kids (under 18) are born with frozen credit. 

🟢 It’s easy for: 
A thief to file taxes using our kid’s social. 

🟡 It’s really hard to:
Freeze your kid’s credit on their behalf. 

🔴 It’s unbelievably difficult to: 
Make a company so secure that our socials are safe.


👉 We as citizens deserve BETTER than sloppy data hoarding. 

It’s just too lucrative to be a cyber criminal. 

You can’t lock down chocolate from my teens, and you can’t keep my social safe so many years later. 


And on the ✨brand ✨issue?

This is personal. 

This is a deal-breaker.

I have the honor of every few weeks or so being the first phone call people make when they are laid off. 

Or when they have had enough. 

Or are sick to death of feeling stalled, stuck, or quieted. 

Here’s some of the guidance I share: 

1: NO JOBSEEKING. 
Don’t go looking for your next role yet. Not in this market. Don’t heave yourself back into the same messy corporate environments until you KNOW who you are.

Stop. Heal. Breathe. 

Get the space and time to be creative and to think about what you actually WANT to do., and what the market needs from you.

And focus full force on this: 


2: SOLVE PROBLEMS
Your service - a boxed problem you solve - it may be fractional, consulting, partnering on projects, subcontracting. Maybe it’s a service with a beginning, middle, end. 

It has to be a service you can do NOW. 

Don’t try to get into a certification program or apply to an expensive graduate program. Save your funds.

This service of yours gets discovered and delineated through conversations with people and 30 for 30s.

You need two clients a month, three clients a quarter, and that’s not a lot. 

It’s enough to stabilize your revenue. 


3: MARKET YOURSELF: 
You don’t need expensive branding. 
You do need a strong LinkedIn profile and compelling thought leadership. 

You’ll need to get clear on what service you’ll offer because you’ll want that revenue coming in. 

You find clients through sharing very clear guidance like I am doing here. 

Help folks. Reach out hand, share your expertise, and CARE. You can handle that. 

It will take time and practice, so don’t waste another day.

Start writing about where your expertise, passion, and where the market needs you all align.


4: BE BRAVE: 
Fear will hold you back for MONTHS when every day counts. Skip past the months of unnecessary edgy and worry around the smart pivot you’ve made (hear me) or was made for you. Skip the back-and-forth on, consulting or jobseeking? It’s both. In the right order. When it’s time.

It will take drastically longer to find a job than it will go than finding side revenue - and we’re all very quiet about it, but there are extremely qualified people tapping out their savings as we speak that need to know that the market is not your friend. 

Don’t waste any time and start:

👉 No job seeking until you have revenue coming in. Busy is hot. Sitting still is not. 
👉 Get clear on what you offer. 
👉 Hone your voice as subject matter expert. Write, right away.

We get so riled up when we see people sent on a goose chase of LinkedIn hacks, tricks. 

“The algorithm is constantly changing, right? We talk a lot about the algorithm, the algorithm, the algorithm… that's what pushes your content out there. That's what determines how successful your post is going to be. And so all these things that may give you a teeny tiny little boost today, probably aren't going to have that same effect in just a short period of time because the algorithm is constantly adjusting. 

What makes me mad is when people invest a lot of time employing these hacks and tricks when what works is building a community, knowing how to share knowledge-based information that's valuable to your target audience and to your people. And just building a community on LinkedIn. And that's how I work and that's how I help people to really be successful on the platform.”  - Melissa Cohen

I should have made it a stronger “I believe” statement a long time ago. 

Three lessons articulated from three convos this week: 

1: If you’re reading this, I believe you need a side gig. 

Waiting till you’re in career transition is too late. If you have the luxury of a current role, build a side project before your role shifts and you have no revenue. 

C-Suite down to tweens babysitting for cash - this is the rough (but beneficial) side of the future of work. It will reveal passion you didn’t know you had).

2: I believe we need to stop learning and start actioning. 

This is coming from someone who dreamed of having a solopreneur training school. 
And lead trainings - a lot of them. 
And thrives on learning. 

We are overwhelmed by info. 

I’m solving for this with my peers, which has to happen - because spinning our wheels, drowning in info is demoralizing. 

Try this: 
1 big action a week. 
3 small actions a day.

3: I believe that we can go 10X faster in collaboration. 

I would have said 2X faster awhile ago. 

Your genius and mine, aligned to serve, is one of the few ways we can significantly accelerate.

nudge them to build their email list 
(I call it your future client list)

Why is building an email list crucial for future clients?

“Mom, I don’t know who this is.” I’m grateful my teen showed me her phone. We’re always talking about scams, but this was the first she received. 

I told her about who could be on the other end of the text:

❌ a cute guy from church youth group 
(except, not really - it's someone a continent away masking their face, voice with #deepfake tech)
❌ an AI designed to steal
❌ a parent my age, promised a role - that turned out to be slavery
❌ Someone within driving distance who may try to convince her to meet 

Their job:
... Get her to trust them. 
... Believe them over her parents. 
... All to harm her. My kid. 

I tried not to overblow the danger - 

But our kids are living at the bleeding edge of scams, sextortion - 

and under age 25 are actually taking some of the worst damage.

What do we do? 

👉 Stories can create behavior change. Share em. 
Facts and data? Am I eating all the veggies yet? 
... anyway, moving on - 

💡Freak people out. 
I've given her a sticky story! 
That story will ring him her mind, and sadly, freak her out - 
She's *immediately equipped* to help keep her friends safe, too.

Go freak out your friends, kiddo. It's our best chance.

You’ll find yourself using your turquoise trivet that was in the Amazon box when you got that new clothes iron, wrapped like a taco, and held in place with a hair tie you yanked out of your messy bun. 

You’ll have oil draining into an old water bottle as you empty old motor oil out of your lawnmower. 

And you're not gonna really feel proud of it, until you realize that you got the job done, and most people would've given up and called some expensive lawnmower repair person. 

But not you. 

👏 You said screw it, I need to mow the lawn today, and I'm going to learn how to get this oil out with YouTube and gumption, and that's that.

👏 Here’s to you that said screw it, I’m going to be brave, and plan to get out of corporate when it isn’t serving you. 

👏 Here’s to you that said screw it, I’m going to forget this CRM nonsense and use a Google Sheet for business development - and started.

They were back to back scheduled. 
Crunch time. 
Tired. Worn out. 
I get it!

… In a corporate role that isn’t serving you

… In a career transition


So - what do you do? 

Fight.
Fight for joy. 
Fight for gratitude, 
Fight for the future you want. 
Get mad at the right things.

👉 There is no way in the world I could have had these businesses I’ve owned for 14 years without FIGHT in me. 


Helpless, panic, hopeless want to take you down. 

If you need to rest, take the day, week, month and heal.
