I'm a firm believer that success comes to those stubborn few organizations that choose to ignore the temporary discomfort of setback for the long-term strategy of delivering value. "Recurring revenue is a product of recurring value". This offers me little choice but to openly acknowledge and pride myself on the inglorious factors that have driven my career: an aching desire to overachieve in the face of adversity; the peculiar blessing of a tendency to downplay prior accomplishments; simple hard work; those proverbial 100,000 hours of practice; and my own share of good fortune, which I refuse to cast into the wind.

Day 1 at BlackHat MEA 2025 was like watching an entire region harden its attack surface in real time: red teams, blue teams, policy makers, founders, and CISOs all looking at the same threat landscape and asking, “How do we get ahead of what’s coming next?”

What’s most obvious walking the floor is how clearly the three core pillars are showing up:

1) Political will: Cyber and AI aren’t side projects here; they’re national priorities.

2) Capital: There is serious, long-term investment behind this push.

3) Talent aggregation: The badge list reads like a global roster: GCC, Europe, US, Asia. The Middle East isn’t just building local skills; it’s pulling in ambitious talent from everywhere and giving them a platform to build.

Those three pillars are why this market is primed for sustained, outsized growth. You have alignment at the state level, money ready to deploy, and world-class talent in the same room, solving the same problems. That’s not incremental change, that’s inflection-point territory.

Heading into Day 2, the energy is only building. Today was about scale and reconnection; tomorrow feels like it’s going to be about depth, real partnerships, real deals, and real plans for how this region will help define the next decade of cybersecurity and AI.

Black Hat Riyadh – Day 2 🚀

Day 2 at Black Hat Saudi has confirmed something many global vendors have yet to understand:

KSA isn’t an “emerging” market. It’s an accelerating one.

A few things I’m seeing on the ground that many still miss:

1️⃣ Vision 2030 isn’t marketing, it’s an operating model. Security, AI, and data governance aren’t side projects here. They’re core to national strategy. Boards, regulators, and operators are aligned in a way you don’t see in many other regions. Deals move when you can show clear alignment to national priorities, not just a cool feature set.

2️⃣ Data sovereignty is now a buying criteria, not a slide. KSA organizations are asking detailed questions about where data lives, who can see it, and how AI models are trained and governed. “Trusted by global brands” isn’t enough. You have to show how you’ll protect Saudi data, in Saudi, for Saudi outcomes.

3️⃣ This isn’t a quick-win market, it rewards real commitment. Teams that fly in once a year to “cover the region” will lose to those who invest in local partners, local talent, and long-term relationships. The bar for partnership here is high, and that’s a good thing.

If you’re still treating KSA as a side bet, you’re already behind.
The momentum here is real, and it’s only Day 2.

"𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞" is a topic that hasn't found itself into the boardroom, but it's coming based on what I'm seeing in the field. Organizations are starting to leverage AI, but they are also seeing that the hidden threat (shadow knowledge) has the potential to derail their enterprise AI initiatives. While everyone is talking about “Shadow AI”, the next shoe to drop is "knowledge". 

"Shadow knowledge," as I think about it, is a massive universe of outdated, duplicate, misclassified, or undiscovered information buried inside every enterprise. This is the knowledge your AI will ingest… and it’s exactly what will mislead it.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐈𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐈 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡, 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐭 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. 
AI doesn’t hallucinate out of nowhere. It hallucinates because we feed it stale, forgotten, or contextless knowledge:
👉 The outdated policy still indexed from 2019
👉 The version-8 document stored next to version-12
👉 The “final” contract saved in one repository and the actual final in someone’s email
👉 The sensitive file that was mislabeled and now sits in a Teams folder feeding the company’s RAG pipeline
👉 The retired product spec that still ranks higher in search because it has more keywords

Shadow knowledge is everything we never meant for AI to see, but it sees anyway. And once it’s in an AI’s retrieval or memory, it becomes operational truth. Shadow knowledge is the new technical debt. And unless it’s addressed head-on, it will derail even the most ambitious AI strategy.
