Hammer Prep

My tenure at Hammer Prep started as a part-time Physics and Calculus tutor part-time, and it evolved into a full-time position preparing students for the SAT and ACT while continuing to tutor Physics and Calculus, adding Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, and other courses for high school and university students. I helped over 500 students in their academics and ACT while working at Hammer Prep, and worked long-term with over 250 students as they prepared for the college entrance exams. 

While working with students at Hammer Prep, I collected performance data and lesson data on Google Sheets to get insights as to what methods worked with individual students and what overall methods helped me optimize the time and quality of instruction. When I started working on SAT and ACT test prep, the standard curriculum had an average of 27 lessons with a high variance based on the student’s starting score. After testing different methods across groups of students, also taking into consideration learning challenges, I was able to reduce the number of lessons to 18. Additionally, the average ACT composite score improvement went up by nearly 200%.

Upon the redesign of the SAT in 2016, I worked with one other employee at Hammer Prep to create a new company manual, adapting to the new style of questions and methodologies that the SAT shifted to, adding over 280 new math questions. The next year we updated our ACT manual, where I not only revised the math section but also revamped the science section, leading to major improvements by our students. Instead of focusing on topics and passage types, I encouraged the students to think more analytically given the data provided. This helped not only with their test scores but also translated to their academics, as reflected by their grades.

As the Associate Project Coordinator, I worked alongside the Project Coordinator in the design, validation and processing of data for GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) assays. My extensive work in MS Excel at an advanced level ensured there were no errors in the reports prior to sending them back to our clients. Collaborating with other lab members, I was able to coordinate more efficient scheduling, balance monthly costs, and track revenues. In addition to work on Excel, I regularly wrote and reviewed extensive technical reports, ensuring proper grammar and wording for our biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients.

As a project analyst at Intertek, I worked with sensitive clinical tests as part of a contract research organization, performing multiple ELISA assays daily in a fast-paced environment. All work done was performed with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) to ensure data fidelity.

UC San Diego

As a lab manager and researcher for the Neuromuscular Bioengineering Laboratory, I made a number of notable contributions to the laboratory. One of my first tasks upon joining the lab was the design and construction of an electrophysiological analysis system for nerve tissue, requiring electric shielding, signal amplification, real-time signal observation integrated through LabVIEW, and post-processing. I drafted the designs and built a Faraday cage to house the microscopes for both in vitro and in vivo analyses on rat models. This setup allowed us to study nerve conductivity at different time periods following nerve damage and surgical repair under different tensions. 

For each experiment, I thought strategically to create a project plan, experimental design, critical path activities to assign internal and external responsibility to assure the project achieved all deliverables. 

Another major accomplishment during this time was the drafting and optimization of immunohistochemical and histological recipes to be formalized as standard operating procedures staining and labeling. We used these procedures to streamline tissue staining and slide production for high volumes of human nerve tissue.

Collaborating with UCSD neurosurgeons, we human nerve tissue, and using the aforementioned procedures, I carried out an extensive study of human nerves for structural analysis, acquiring, storing, and cataloging over 100 tissue samples based on subject and physiology.

For each of the visiting residents, fellows, graduate students and undergraduate researchers, I instructed them on proper techniques in microscopy, cryosection, and slide production for analysis. I supervised the undergraduates as they worked in the lab as well as coordinated the work with visiting medical staff to ensure we were at the same pace for design and production of the computational analysis software for nerve analytics, ultimately supervising up to 5 students, engineers, and clinicians.

Bioengineering Lab Manager; Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery

Salk Institute for Biological Studies

While volunteering in Wylie Vale's laboratory at the Salk Institute, I worked with a postdoctoral fellow who was studying the neurological changes that take place with constant exposure to social anxiety. This study was performed with mouse models, and considered central gene-expression changes we were able to visualize with in situ hybridization, quantitative PCR, and RNA extraction.

Volunteer Neuroscience Research Assistant

The Chicago Medical School (Rosalind Franklin University)

Our laboratory focused on the discovery and characterization of dual-pore potassium ion channels both cloned and native such channels in the carotid body using Patch-Clamp experimentation. Patch-clamp is biophysics at its finest - connecting a glass tube to the cell membrane of a single cell under a microscope, and then recording the electrical signals produced while changing the ion content surrounding the cell. 

 After processing the data, isolating the signal from noise, we were able to verify our discovery of an ATP-Sensitive Potassium channel, as well as further characterize a hybrid channel more characteristic of those found in neonatal carotid bodies. As a lab of 2 people, myself and the principle investigator, I was solely responsible for all experimentation, data acquisition and analysis, and subsequently writing one of the published papers. Prior to my departure, I was responsible for training 2 new hires during over 4 months to ensure their ability to take over the research.

Georgia Institute of Technology

While working as a Graduate Student in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University, I had the opportunities to teach a senior-level Tissue Engineering Course, particularly in the Tissue Culture laboratory, teaching the students about the experiments and technologies they would be using, as well as preparing the materials and ensuring that they learned the best practices for cell culture, working with aseptic technique, as well as critically thinking about the results they found during their experimentation - especially when things didn't go as planned. One of my favorite lessons I taught was how no data is bad data, it just requires a more in-depth analysis to make conclusions about how the results acquired may have been influenced by external factors.
