13+ years ago, I made a bet that changed the trajectory of my entire career.

RAI_Framework

A lot of PMs think they need to know everything about AI to land an AI PM role.

But here's the hard truth:

You are not hired for how much you know as an AI PM.
You're hired for the way you think.

I've been involved in the hiring process of hundreds of AI PMs.

And I'll tell you this...

You can:
 
• Binge every online course
• Memorize transformer diagrams
• Build a side project or two

... but none of it matters if you can't demonstrate how you think.

When evaluating candidates, hiring managers only care about 3 things:
 
• How you navigate ambiguity
• How you make trade-offs
• How you connect technical capability to meaningful product outcomes

Hence why I always tell students in my AI PM cohorts:

"Yes, you must know AI, but its proof is what will get you hired and promoted."

This is also the reason one of our core philosophies at Next Gen Product Manager is "Show the thinking, not just the output."

Here's the main gist...

If you want to transition into AI, you must demonstrate your ability to:
 
• Surface the right questions early on
• Compare approaches with clear reasoning
• Create structure in a non-deterministic environment

Learn the fundamentals of AI.
Build projects.
And explain how you arrive at solutions.

This combination is what will set you apart.

Let’s debunk the biggest myth about transitioning into AI as a PM:

(And highlight the two skills that actually matter)

Knowing how to code is not a requirement.

What you really need is:
 
1. Strong product sense
2. Enough technical fluency to make sound decisions alongside your engineering partners.

Why do I say this?

Because the most effective PMs start with the problem.

They can recognize when AI is genuinely the right tool, when it isn’t, and how to shape a solution that’s both technically grounded and user-centric.

They understand how model behavior impacts users in ideal scenarios and in edge cases, when performance has degraded, and in ambiguous situations.

There's no need for you to know how to write production-grade code.

The most important thing you must know how to do is speak the language of AI.

And you must be able to do this well enough to:
 
• Evaluate trade-offs
• Challenge assumptions
• Connect system behavior to business outcomes.

Technical fluency is what lets you translate between product goals and engineering realities.

When something goes wrong, a strong AI PM already has fallback strategies that protect the user experience and maintain trust.

So if you’re already good at problem framing, collaboration, and designing for users, you’re closer than you think.

The next leap is building the technical fluency that allows you to reason about AI systems with clarity and confidence.

I’ve hired AI PMs across multiple large-scale Fortune 500 organizations.

Here's a harsh truth:

Submitting applications through job portals isn’t the most effective way to land opportunities.

Because it only works under one condition -

Your experience aligns almost perfectly with the job description.

If it doesn’t, your application won’t even reach a human reviewer.

That’s not a reflection of your potential.

It’s a reflection of how hiring systems operate.

So what you need to ask yourself is this:

"How do I transition my PM skills into AI without relying on portals?"

The secret?

You build your path through visible, high-quality work.

Let me give you an example.

Some months back, I kept seeing a PM show up in my feed...

She wasn’t positioned as an “AI PM” at the time.
She wasn't trying to signal expertise she didn’t have.

But she was consistently:
 
• Teaching what she learned
• Sharing the projects she was building
• Contributing to community discussions
• Demonstrating genuine curiosity and depth

I was so impressed by the work that I invited her to teach one of my cohorts.

Here's the point I want to get across:

Proof is your most valuable asset for your career as a PM.

You must be able to demonstrate your ability to [insert]

So if you’re trying to transition or upskill into AI roles with your PM skills,

This is what you MUST do:
 
• Build product projects that solve meaningful problems
• Share your work consistently
• Make your thinking visible
• Be intentional about the skills you’re developing

It is 10x easier to be hired when you show the industry that you’re already doing the work.

This is why I emphasize building a portfolio in my AI PM cohort...

The people who will give you an opportunity must see you're already doing the work.

Don't apply for roles with the intent to learn.

Learn with the intention of demonstrating your capability by educating others.

And this will attract the roles to you.
