Guaranteeing $5 billion dollars worth of loans for Indigenous people at one of the best rates in Canada is only a tiny fraction of what is OWED, without payback or interest, through historical treaties. The Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 all by itself was valuated (by a Nobel laureate economist) at $100B in retroactive payment and settled for $10B in court (payment, not loan), with ongoing legal battles and negotiation for what that payment will be going forward. So if we’re comparing to a single treaty in one primarily Anishinaabek and Cree territory, the federal loan program is less than 5% of that accounting for what nations will have to pay back in interest. 

What is the government doing to actively honour treaties? Anishinaabeg and other First Nation, Metis and Inuit relatives: do not settle or stop at such a small deal. $5 billion dollars in guaranteed loans may seem like a lot but it’s like Canada is loaning us our own money. Revenue sharing and tax benefits are the only way that the federal and provincial governments should be making reparation for all of the historical legal and treaty injustice.

This deal comes from a deep place of scarcity, aligning with the historic purpose of the Indian Act. I say this not trying to minimize the hard work of FNIM in getting here, but pointing out that this deal is not “just the beginning”: but hardly even a start at all.

Incredibly inspired by Joe Hanita FCA, CPFA, CMInstD (Ngāti Kuia, Te ātiawa, Rangitāne and Ngāti Kahungunu Māori nations from New Zealand) model for value creation founded in notions of our relation to the land. Absolutely incredible and necessary in the energy transition and sustainability reporting. Indigenous identity tells an incredible story of land stewardship, energy security, prosperity and safety for years to come. He also highlights the criticality of Indigenous languages and traditions, where our depth of knowledge comes from.
