I'm committed to systems change in the largest industry on earth because it's the largest lever we can pull to improve life for billions of people. Changing who the finance industry benefits will lead to conversations humanity is currently not equipped to have today - the conversations needed if we're going to be here in 200 years time.

Things I've learned: 
As a Cleaner - People are messy but expect others to be clean. 
As a Waiter - Human interaction is the joy in life. 
As a Paramedic - People need healthcare, but first need society to care.
Volunteering  - People with disabilities are often holistically more able than the able bodied.
Cooking for others - Those without food are the most generous people.
Training as an Army Officer - Good leaders make themselves redundant.
Studying Psychology - people's 'why' is everything. 
Studying Law - Two wrongs can’t make a right. 
Running a Managed Fund - the finance industry is fu*ked. 
When I was poor - I learned that happiness comes from within.
As a Queer Autistic Jew - my existence offends many people.

I’m thrilled to announce Maslow® has finalised a partnership agreement with a fully licensed bank!

This partnership equips Maslow® to pursue a strategy that has been 3 years in the making. A strategy that will position us to respond to and expand on a fundamental shift in customer and societal expectations that Up Bank identified.

We’re planning to go a lot further than Up did by not just building Maslow® for our customers needs, but by building it 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢, and for the society every person has an equal right to share and play an important role in. 

Every customer of Maslow® will be entitled to ownership the moment they join, and we plan to do a near full equity transfer to our customers over time - a gift from Maslow’s shareholders to the world (which they’re contractually bound to). 

Today marks an important step on our long but determined mission to build a new finance industry for humanity. 

At the heart of Maslow® is a belief that a small group of shareholders shouldn’t be the main beneficiaries of an industry all people rely on to live a healthy, happy and prosperous life. We firmly believe that together we can change who this industry exists for who it benefits most. 

Next up, a million customers 🥳 Then a billion. Sounds crazy, but we aren’t ashamed of aiming high because that's what change demands.

Thank you to the people who’ve spent hundreds of hours on the phone with me the past few months because of your belief that the finance industry needs change, and that we might just be the ones to do it.

I was asked to speak about financing the transition. So I spoke about why this isn't happening. And I proposed how we can redesign business & finance to make it happen. 

💰 Today, life is in service to finance. 
🌲 We need finance to be in service to life. 

As we say at Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL), this requires building an economy that is regenerative & distributive by design.

Drawing on the work of Marjorie Kelly, we can do this by diving into the deep design of business - transforming ownership models, governance structures and beyond. We can draw from the models championed by Purpose Economy, People and Planet First, Employee Ownership Association, International Cooperative Alliance, Post Growth Guide, REScoop.eu and many others redefining the relationship between business and finance.

It also means redesigning investment instruments, drawing from the work of Zebras Unite, Aunnie Patton Power, Transform Finance, Equality Impact Investing and countless others.

Ultimately, financing the transition is about challenging the constraints of 20th century finance. Something new is emerging, and it excites many.

What do you call it when a pro-customer-wealth company launches a product that extracts from & harms those same customers?

Conflict, and it drives constant and irrevocable harm to customers. 

Conflict is the bedrock of the entire finance industry and all of the financially extractive businesses in it. 

It's why the industry grew 300% in the past 40 without adding anything to the broader economy. 

It's a rent-extracting industry extracting money from the world with harmful products it markets as being beneficial. 

Robinhood could be run for the betterment of its customers instead of the extraction of them. It could benefit customers. The entire industry could. 

We're building Maslow® to put financially extractive businesses like Robinhood out of business and to build a finance industry that serves its customers - not the billionaire owners who go on TV and sprout bullshit a 5th grader can smell from a hundred paces.

The finance industry doesn't have to be like this. 

It can benefit 100% of humanity instead of just the 5% who own it. It doesn't have to extract from everyone for the benefit of a few.

Brilliant and smart oped by Oxfam's Nabil Ahmed from last month. When corporate power becomes so concentrated in such few hands as it is now, money only flows upwards, driving inequality and totally distorting societies and democracies, just like in the Gilded Age. Nabil gives a great reading of the current situation globally and in the States, as well as some glimmers of hope on how cracks are appearing. 

"An economic paradigm shift appears to be underway within the US government, exemplified by a reinvigorated anti-monopoly movement. Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan and Jonathan Kanter, the head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division, have advanced a series of ambitious reforms, rewriting the lax merger guidelines that enabled corporations to amass unprecedented power, proposing a ban on non-compete clauses, and securing landmark victories for patients and consumers. The FTC’s antitrust lawsuit against Amazon, in particular, represents a powerful rebuke to industrial oligarchy".

Cracks in the New Gilded Age | by Nabil Ahmed - Project Syndicate

When I talk about our mission of pursuing a finance industry that doesn’t extract from the world for the benefit of a few, men often fall over themselves to challenge me on it - as if I’ve threatened their entitlement to exist. 

Frequently, they fall over their arrogance and ignorance and clamour their way into the comments of my posts, challenging anything and everything they can, rationalising backwards, ignoring all visible and available facts, ignorantly refusing to research or answer for themselves the questions they demand I answer without the context they well know would invalidate the premise of the question itself. 

It’s nothing more than patriarchal bullying and gaslighting - just asshole men running around the internet looking for a fight with people they feel would judge them for being the oxygen thieves they know they are. 

These men never look for fights on posts that celebrate getting rich at the expense of others. They only ever look for fights with people who have the courage to say that the alter they worship at and celebrate is exactly what’s causing the issues in the world. 

You might think that I’ve drawn an irrational conclusion…. That I’ve rolled out a straw man argument….But I haven’t. And do you know how I know that? 

Because not one woman has ever done it. 

Not one. Ever. 

Never has any woman challenged my pursuit of a mission that would bring greater fairness to the world. 

Dozens and dozens of men have. And will continue to. 

So let this be a warning to these men: 

I have no time for you. I will continue to delete your comments and block you because you are trash and I owe you nothing of me or my time. 

And for the avoidance of doubt: 

I’m here for the women, and every person who prefers the way most women treat people over the way so many men do.
