I gave practical academic advice to young scholars based on their completed research and current career goals. As part of this advisory role, I completed substantive editing work and proofreading on a variety of document types, from academic journal manuscripts to job query letters. Many of my clients were English as a Second Language (ESL) speakers, so the job also drew on my expertise as a trained linguist; I was able to quickly identify and correct common errors in cross-cultural communication, while also providing in-depth disciplinary feedback and tips for producing clearer, cleaner, more professional-sounding writing.

I grew the product function at Shmoop from a 'one woman band' (myself) to 4 additional PMs and 2 UI/UX designers, while organising the efforts of 14 engineers in-house and dozens of content developers to launch 100s of K–12 products. I was instrumental in determining the financial strategies and product direction for the company, along with the CEO, CTO, and CCO. One of the biggest changes I implemented during my tenure was to convert the company’s direct sales model for student-facing products from a single-purchase model to a subscriptions model. (Everyone wants to be Netflix.) At the same time, I helped to switch our back-end payment system from Paypal to Stripe. Profits doubled YoY for this revenue stream.

I organized and prioritized all of Shmoop’s engineering and product tasks/bugs via agile, two-week sprints in Jira. I also owned products end-to-end, chatted with teachers and students using our products on-site, managed design and user testing, and managed product QA up to release and the engineering teams during release. I always aimed to work at the intersection of large-scale data analysis and human, creative design to build products that grew the business. And it was all for a good cause. Unlike private college tutors, our SAT Test Prep was low-cost enough to be purchased by almost anyone with an internet connection. We helped under-served schools give top-quality education to their students.

I designed, specified the UIX for, and wrote and edited the copy for thousands of unique URLs within Shmoop's English language and literature sections, college and careers sections, and premium test prep products. For example, I wrote this “dating profile” for Stanford University http://www.shmoop.com/stanford-university. All of this content is designed to be SEO-savvy and click-bait-worthy. As my responsibilities at Shmoop grew, I came to manage 50+ at-large writers, editors, and translators of Shmoop's free and premium content to meet tight product deadlines while maintaining high quality. Quality is a must for Shmoop, as the company contracts with individual schools and districts across the U.S.

As a researcher in sociophonetics, I analyzed how the way you talk represents who you are, where you've been, and where you're going. I like this field particularly because it uses quantitative data analysis to further social theory, grounding each pursuit in the strengths of the other.

During my Ph.D. work, I also helped to found and served as a primary researcher for the Voices of California Project (http://web.stanford.edu/dept/linguistics/VoCal/). You can find press on that project on KQED (http://www.californiareport.org/archive/R201211231630/a) and elsewhere. 

The Voices of California project investigates how Californians perceive the social geography of California—how they see their communities, their regions, and the rest of the state—and how these perceptions influence language variation across the state. Our first field site was Merced, a county in the center of the state where a lot of the state’s food is produced. Then followed Shasta County (with a focus on Redding), and Bakersfield County (with a focus on Bakersfield).

What if AI isn't replacing junior analysts, but becoming their most effective teacher 🤔💭

People generally tend to lean on the negative side of how AI will impact real estate. “Oh, if AI is doing the junior analyst work, then how will the junior employees actually learn!?”
