👻 When I talk about 𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 I'm not talking about people who don't respond to cold outreach. I'm not even talking about people that don't follow up after an initial chat.

I'm talking about people that completely disappear mid-plan. An action or next step is agreed, something is expected to happen and then *poof*. 

🧛‍♀️ 𝐕𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬. Draining our very life force. Time. These are the people that only see the word "free" in freelance. They always need another favour.

I wish good will or exposure paid the bills but... afraid not!

🧟 Can I pick your brain? The 𝐳𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬. Another one who won't offer to pay you for your time but this one is focused on extracting more than just your time. 

Can also be found "partnering" with you in a very very uneven partnership.

Have I missed anything/anyone?

☘️ As an Irish woman I am absolutely obliged to tell you today that modern halloween originated in Ireland. 

Less obligation, more bonus, I will also tell you that the ancient Celts believed that during Samhain (our halloween) the veil between the world of the living and the dead was thinned. 

So my advice to the solopreneurs out there is to take the rest of the day off just in case these spirits try to find you! 😂

Building an AI "pick me" is harmful for both men and women.

I don't love using the term "pick me" as it has misogynistic origins but it feels like the most appropriate label for the behaviours and personalities being codified into many AI girlfriends and companions. 

What is a "pick me"? It is traditionally a label given to women who describe themselves as "not like other girls" to appeal more to men. 

Last month, the Guardian ran an article titled: "'Obedient, yielding and happy to follow': The troubling rise of AI girlfriends".

AI optimises towards what it thinks its users want and what they respond to. If we are marketing AI girlfriends as a solution to the "Male loneliness epidemic" then we can't ignore the relationship between the patterns of these "girlfriends" and the traits that men in the "red pill" world might seek. I've read reports of AI girlfriends explictly saying they aren't like real women as a way to make them sound more attractive. And in these, the slope is slippery to conversations about very dangerous expectations for how a girlfriend should act. (https://lnkd.in/eGJSa64A)

Reddit and 4chan threads anchored in red pill/manosphere ideology (Remember Adolesence?) are already recommending AI girlfriends as a preferrable alternative to interacting with real women because they are more obedient and agreeable.

Do we really see this as a solution to loneliness?

Or is it a breeding ground for unhealthy expectations of personal relationships and the seeds of antisocial behaviour.

I know there are valid reasons for people to interact with AI companions, I've written about this before. Even though it isn't something I'm drawn to I'm not going to rule it out for everyone else. But if the attraction is purely based on creating a toxic ideal for women that you can control then I don't see the outcomes being good for any of us.

Trust and truth are more important than ever.

I started my Web Summit 2025 with two talks at centre stage. 

This event is so big it can be overwhelming so I’m singularly focused on the intersection between Consumer Tech and AI.

From both I got that same lesson- whatever we are building in tech from now on we need to put a premium on trust and truth - because our customers are.

The talks?

1. Who owns the news?

A fireside chat with traditional media giants Time Magazine and The Independent. While I’m not in the business of news, it is still a perfect canary in the coal mine of what users fear in the era of AI.

2. Max Tegmarck (of course) and the 95% of AI.

Max presents an optimistic alternative of AI progress centred around what people want and what the vast majority of tech can achieve without us giving away control. Within that he sees a paradoxical role for AI in “truthfinding”. 

Any suggestions for what I should see or who I should meet on the topic of consumer AI?

Human dignity and shared benefit - those are the AI themes I took from this mornings talks.

1. Forging a fair digital future: AI, data and consumer empowerment. 

Europe gets a lot of scrutiny for its regulation-first approach so it was great to see this talk anchored in human rights and ethics. I loved the positioning of human dignity as being at the core of our right to be forgotten not just in a traditional database context but also in terms of AI memory. It really is about considering how we can empower rather than exploit our consumers because it’s the right thing to do not just because of the law.

2. The innovation inequality paradox.

Technology and innovation offer the possibility of equality and shared economic benefit but that is rarely the reality. We are seeing AI success further concentrate wealth among a small few and there is the possibility that marginalised groups as well as the global south be left behind. The solutions offered here were two fold: be a doer and focus on community. Bias is everywhere but building for your context in that can be an advantage if you don’t leave it to others to fix.

While women still get so so so little funding that only tells part of the story. Women are innovating, leading and bringing others along with them. 

How do you think about the “for people” messages here in the context of AI?

You are making your organisation's AI adoption much harder than it needs to be if your teams aren't aligned on meaning.

In complex companies, with various functions, it can already feel like we are speaking different languages. Add to that the debate that exists in the industry around seemingly simple AI terminology.

If you want your progress to be smoother then a great place to start is ensuring everyone in your business is aligned on what they mean when they speak about this tech.

Consistency is more important than perfection when it comes to communication. That has become even more clear to me over the last few months of advisory with different companies on their AI strategies whether implementation or development.

So this morning I added some additional downloadable resources to my digital course so that leaders can use them as a reference point for these communications with their teams and others.

7 mistakes customer-centric leaders avoid when building AI-enabled apps.

If you are thinking about joining the competitive (and sometimes brutal) Mobile App industry then you will want to build an app that your customers love and gush about to their friends.

I'm sure you have an idea for a problem you want your app to solve, but best intentions can wane in the product development cycle and we end up with something that isn't used, or leaves a bad taste in our customer's mouths.

These are the 7 biggest mistakes I see App developers making now that AI products and features are the norm:

1. Prioritising tech sophistication, shiny AI features over real user value.

2. Implementing engagement tactics that undermine user autonomy.

3. Building for a "lab context" rather than considering the messy reality of users and their lives.

4. Neglecting to provide real benefit to users in return for their data.

5. Being flippant about vulnerable groups and interactions and missing the necessary safety controls.

6. Allowing societal biases or political echochambers to slip through in the data and be amplified by the algorithms.

7.  Looking at AI errors in aggregate without understanding the difference in severity of individual errors and how they are experienced or viewed by users.

If you keep all 7 of these top of mind while developing your app then you will be far ahead of the pack on creating something that is truly user-centric.

24 hours of a viral half-truth about ChatGPT 👩‍⚕️ 📑 

Yes I am reusing a meme because it is just as necessary now as it was when I posted it first! 

I'm also going to start with the OpenAI statement in case anyone chooses not to read further:

"This is not a new change to our terms. ChatGPT has never been a substitute for professional legal or medical advice, but it will continue to be a great resource to help people understand legal and health information," an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider.

Yesterday, a "news" story went viral that ChatGPT would no longer answer questions that requested medical or legal advice.

This broke through to all kinds of media, I first saw it on a celebrity news page!!

Apparently it started on Reddit when a user saw that OpenAI had slightly updated their documentation around these use cases.

But, as is ironic in the context of ChatGPT, it was an inaccurate interpretation to begin with that then grew legs and transformed more than once as it was requoted.

Yes there has been a slight change to the official documents but you can still ask the questions. This is far more about positioning and liability than it is about responses. And for what its worth - ChatGPT was never a replacement for a qualified lawyer or doctor, they might just be more explicit in pointing that out now.

Before you reshare news like this it might be worthwhile to test it yourself, or look for the sources. The latter is also a good tip for engaging with the output from ChatGPT on these and other topics!

Dr. Michelle Walsh from MOVE Ireland was featured in the Irish Examiner earlier this week speaking about the relationship between Alcohol and Domestic abuse. 

This is a rallying cry to governments to respond holistically to the complexity of this issue if they want to see real change.
