On my way to my dream job because my world didn’t end when I got divorced in pharmacy school.

There’s something extra special about this month in that I’ve officially precepted over 30 APPE students.

And man… I wish 2013 Kate could see me now and just know we turn out pretty awesome.

This topic is hard to be vulnerable about but I know someone needs this message today.

Some student out there is not even sure where to apply for residency because she doesn’t know where she will be living.

Some student is terrified of matching to a program using a name she won’t have by the time she starts next summer.

Some preceptor needs to be reminded that we have no clue what our students are going through if we don’t invite them to be humans. That starts with modeling our own vulnerability.

I felt so much shame back then. 

I didn’t tell a single preceptor.

I kept my head down. 
Worked hard. 
Cried in private.
Numbed the pain.

That’s why as a preceptor, I’m normalizing making spaces to say hard things, like:

I’ve experienced grief.
I’ve been crippled with anxiety.
I’ve been hurt by someone I thought I could trust.
And
I’ve laughed until I cried.
I’ve been so full of joy I could burst.
My hurt has been redeemed.

I’m human.

And every time I show my humanity, it gives my learners the freedom to be humans too.
