Before that: 25 years of trying to make things look a whole better than they were as Head of Marketing, mainly in the tech / SaaS sector.

I'm Ieaving marketing.

This is because of some of the issues I've raised on here over the last decade. Predominantly the sexism, lies, bullying and lack of intelligence.

My patience has gone.

It's been an awesome career. I loved it.

But I am going to have to leave it in your capable hands.

I can't explain social media to one more CEO.

I can't explain the power of brand to one more bunch of investors.

I can't face one more interview where they ask me "how could you get those results more quickly and with two thirds of the budget".

I'm not consulting / freelancing / moving into internal comms.

I'm leaving leaving.

I'm going to be living off grid. Which to those of you who know me personally should be no surprise.

A million pounds can't delight me more than a leaf does. All the kudos and gloss matters less to me than a single blade of grass. I have a sense and power of wonder like nobody I've met. So I need to live that life now.

Now I can be quite honest with you, making rich men richer was for me personally a waste of a good few years of my life. And that's the job. And the more senior you get the clearer it becomes that everything else is just window dressing to that goal.

I'll still be on LinkedIn but it won't for much longer be appropriate to talk about tech marketing because I won't be practising. Hopefully I'll forget a lot of it.

My words are my gift so here are some:

You can be intelligent and unconventional.

You can be brilliant at marketing and not have to be grateful for a shit product or crumbs of recognition from a board you LITERALLY have to explain basic concepts too whilst being told your plan isn't a plan.

You can be loyal and hardworking but have a line.

You can be happy.

That's what I'm going to show you next.

And if you do...that's OK too.

But I don't.
