I co-founded Mannequino with my husband and fellow designer Arash Kaynama in 2012. Mannequino was the world's first closed-loop mannequin design, using our patented shaping technology, we digitally manufacture our unique flat-packing pop-up Mannequino range exclusively here in the UK. Royal College of Art Alumni, we studied Design and built a London based studio practice together, working as consultants for many brands and institutions, including MIT Media Lab, worked on collaborative research with Stratasys Fortus, taught at the Royal College of Art, Brighton University and the Free University of Bolzano. We have designs produced by Memphis Milano in Italy, and manufactured large our own designs under 'Arash and Kelly' between 2002-2010. You can see some of our earlier projects here: https://www.behance.net/ArashandKellyStudio Our interest in the circular economy really started in around 2006, when we began to understand the social impact and environmental damage of large scale global consumerism, and cradle-to-grave system. As designers we felt in a pivotal space. At the same time in 2005/6 we were designing a flat packing mannequin to be first used by fashion sustainable expert Dr. Bernice Pan founder of Deploy Workshop label, to use internationally. We decided to scale down the studio and concentrate on one circular activity, the resulting concept was awarded with a place at RCA Innovations, in the Dyson Building in 2012, and from there we were invited to ARCC Innovations, to start the disruptive journey towards our first global roll outs, becoming manufacturers and designing a neat and dynamic digital factory for our circular products. Our business model neatly encapsulates a number of highly valuable propositions for our clients. As well circularity, the propositions are bonded into a product concept model that can be expanded in range and scaled globally in the future in small off-grid manufacturing hubs. We are currently contributing our experiences as guest speakers on the MBA Electives and Exec MBA at Cambridge University, for Professor Khaled Soufani, Director of Circular Economy Centre, Cambridge Judge Business School. And I am a member of the board for design Thinking at Cranfield University’s School of Water, and visiting business for ‘Operations Excellence’ Program.
