What are relatable opening scenes in a video?

Like a visual handshake, the opening scenes welcome your audience into your video story.

Their goal is to connect with your target viewers' experiences, desires, or challenges - making sure your audience knows they're in the right place. 


🟠  I'm not talking about "flashy" or "clever." 

Opening scenes that try too hard to impress easily lose the more important and relatable human touch.

Those rapid, high-intensity cuts between scenes might dazzle - but they probably leave the viewer wondering, "What does this have to do with me?" 

More fitting for a blockbuster movie trailer than a connection-building brand video.

'Say too much and you say nothing.' 

It sums up viewer confusion when you overload your video with too much information.

It's an easy trap to fall into.


🧡  Instead, think of your video as an introduction that creates an emotional connection.

Its role should be a high-level overview of the main points you want to convey, not an exhaustive lecture about every nook and cranny.

Save the deep details for the next step - after they express interest.

Planning a training video?

🟠  Start with the end in mind - what should your employees be able to do differently after watching the training video?   

Vague goals won't cut it.   

"Improve safety awareness" is a start, but "Reduce workplace accidents by 85%" is far more actionable and measurable.  


🟠  Understand your audience 

You need to understand their challenges and the gaps in their training.  

Don't go at it with blinkers on. 

Or what you 'think' the knowledge gaps are.  

Consider their current level of understanding and build from there.   

Are they new to the topic, or do they have a base level of knowledge that you can expand upon?   


🟠  Consult with stakeholders 

Talk to managers, team leaders, and trainees.  

If you've conducted training sessions before, feedback from these can be a goldmine.  

Are there common questions or difficulties that your audience faces?  

Take the time to review feedback or conduct surveys to gain these insights.   

Knowing this helps you plan training content for better clarity and understanding.

Recruitment videos should be more than a list of facts about your company and the job offer.

Instead, your video should tell a story.

🟠  That might be via chats with your people to let the genuine values of your company shine through.

🟠  You could use the emotional pull of music to create a montage of scenes that takes viewers through an uplifting journey.

🟠  Or start your video with an attention-grabbing blooper - a behind the scenes moment that makes the viewer smile.

The ebb and flow of scenes, the changes in tempo and camera angles all work together to keep viewers engaged in your video storytelling.

Your audience – prospective candidates – can then connect with your company emotionally.

When you start writing a training video script, don't worry about the vision - get the words down first.  


🟠  I start with a structure built from a list of main points to be covered

...and then expand on each point.


🟠  Use the words 'you' and 'your' more than 'we' and 'our.' 

This will connect more naturally with your trainees


🟠  Consider the flow of your script

It should move logically and smoothly from one point to the next - and not sound like you're speaking from a list of bullet points.

Check this by reading out loud. 

Any phrase that sounds jarring needed to be rethought.


🟠  Keep your language simple and direct  

You want to connect with your audience, not preach.  

So, use a conversational tone in your script.  

Banish jargon, technical terms, and overly complicated language – if you must use specialised terms, define them clearly.  

If there's a shorter or simpler word, use it.  

[Instead of saying "utilise," say "use."  Instead of "facilitate," say "help."]


🟠  Go easy on adjectives; you don't need them  

All they do is trip up the flow and make your message a little harder to quickly understand.


🟠  Review each sentence you write - what can you cut out?  

By stripping back the language to essentials, you create a script that's easier to follow and understand.  


🟠  End with key takeaways 

Add critical takeaways at the end of the video or each section in a video series.  

This summary is your final punch, a recap of the crucial points you want them to take away.  

You could also encourage viewers to reflect on what they've learned. 

Pose a question or suggest a quick activity related to the key takeaways to ensure the learnings stick.


🟠  Now you can think about vision

What can you add visually to reinforce the words? 

Could a real-life scenario make the content more relevant and actionable?
 
Will a graphic or animation make a challenging idea easier to understand?  

Can you add testimonials or interviews with people who have successfully implemented what you're teaching?  

This storytelling adds authenticity and shows the real-world impact of the training.
