I am a detail-oriented career practitioner and a former research scientist with a passion for helping graduate, and postdoctoral trainees maximize their potential for transitioning into fulfilling careers. I strongly believe in leveraging LinkedIn to share and amplify opportunities. I use my lived experience as an international student and postdoc to guide my advising. I currently work as a postdoctoral and graduate student professional development specialist in the faculty of engineering and architectural science at Toronto Metropolitan University. I have written articles on career and professional development in both Inside higher ed and University Affairs and been a guest speaker at career and professional development events at several US and Canadian universities and national career conferences. I am a member of the Graduate Career Consortium (GCC) and the Graduate and Postdoctoral Development Network (GPDN) and have organized social and career events for the science non-profit STEMPeers. My role involves one on one advising, organizing events, career and professional development events, and in-class programming in collaboration with faculty, staff, and student groups. Over the last three years I have organized over 40 events including STEM career panels, a virtual job shadowing program to encourage networking amidst COVID19, and facilitated workshops on LinkedIn, resume, cover letters, navigating the Canadian job market, and shared my experiences as an international graduate student, postdoc, and Canadian newcomer. I have been an invited speaker at career-related events at Brock University, Stonybrook university, Humber College, Fleming College and presented at the GPDN and LSCE symposia for students and postdocs As a scientist, my research has focused on the molecular pathways involved in neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders including schizophrenia, alcohol abuse, and Rett syndrome. I have mentored three high school, three undergraduate students, and one medical resident for their research projects and served as a peer reviewer for over 20 manuscripts for PLoS one, Neuroreport, schizophrenia bulletin, Molecular Psychiatry, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, and Journal of Neurochemistry. I love connecting with professionals in higher education, career and professional development, STEM hiring managers, recruiters and hearing from graduate, undergraduate, postdoctoral trainees that have transitioned into different career paths.
