I work in a variety of DG's at the European Union - Commission, Council, Parliament - with middle to senior managers, directors and secretary generals.  I have done a lot of work in authentic interview preparation to assist these managers for interviews for higher positions.  Of recent I have two clients who have been posted as Ambassadors to Jamaica and Somalia and a new Director in DG Near for the Western Balkans.  

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿

I arrive in #Dubai between two long flights.
Evening light. A warm breeze. The city humming.

Weeks ago I set a date to meet a friend I first met online in 2020.

My flight lands late, so we agree to meet for coffee in the morning.

I am grateful that Noha Hefny is free. She has just moderated  a panel at a #MENA Women’s Leadership Summit in Dubai. She brings talent, knowledge and soul. You feel it the moment she walks in.

Noha is an inspiring executive and a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship. She serves on boards, consults and lives her values and purpose with a clear vision. She is a graceful communicator.

Our #connection began during Covid. Screens on. Spirits open. I cannot recall the first message. I remember the instant click.

Five years ago, I tried twice to send her my book. Lost somewhere between #Singapore and Dubai. We laughed about this and agreed hand delivery has its own magic. Finally…

What binds us is the #NomadicMindset. The work I do with individuals, teams and organisations. And most of all our shared humanity and desire to be useful.

Morning comes. We sit for coffee at my hotel. Conversation flows like a river after rain. We cross many terrains like a nomad. We laugh. We trade stories. We sketch possibilities. We almost solve the world’s biggest problems. Almost.

Along the way, this meeting with Noha brought me home to my top Gallup Strengths quality - #Connector and its superpower. Our time together re-affirmed what I live.

In fact, this entire trip to Europe is about connection. I will join the SUN Coaching Retreat (a coaching certification I have, have some business meetings, and meet with long time friends. I do not know many at the Retreat so this will be wonderful.

Connection matters. It is multilayered. It lifts the heart and opens new paths. I leave Noha alive. Inspired. Reenergized. Then I head to my flight.

The magic of connection is never to be taken for granted.

𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯? Don’t put it off. Life is too short to be too busy for connections.

I loved my Dubai pause. Next is a twelve hour stop over in #Brussels to meet a client and share lunch with long-time friends. More connections ahead.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲: 𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗣𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘

Miroslav Bardović CSP asked, after my post 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘸𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨:
“Such a beautiful post… during your time off, what other guidelines did you follow apart from not working?”

His question nudged me to share more.

We live fast and uncertain. A roller coaster that keeps changing direction. We can fight every turn, or loosen our grip, notice what life is showing us, and choose a deliberate pace. Sometimes the wise move is to go nomading for a while, then return by choice.

This speed throws many of us off mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically. So #PAUSE. And then #PACE it.

PACING is a nomadic approach to explore and “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘝𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘺, 𝘈𝘤𝘵 𝘕𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘺.” — Binderiya, Mongolia.

I know I have more flexibility as an #entrepreneur, that’s a privilege and a choice. Still, taking a PAUSE is non-negotiable #choice, because health sits above everything.

When your voice says, “I can’t pause, let along pace,” notice it. 

Start small with a five-minute stop, a slow breath, a short walk. Choose it. Be brave and patient; changing pace is challenging for most. Listen to your body and to the world around you. This starts the #belonging to you.

Here are eight out of many defining practices/guidelines that work for me and for my clients:

1.    Pause in four rhythms: Micro daily (5 min–a few hours), Mini monthly (a few days), Medio quarterly (up to 10 days), Macro yearly (up to 4 weeks).
2.    Detox from social media, even briefly.
3.    Listen deeply. Observe readily. Stay curious.
4.    Be with Nature’s elements: Sun, wind, rain, moon…
5.    Let body and heart lead. Rest without guilt.
6.    Flow, don’t force. Allow, don’t resist.
7.    Breathe deeply with awareness.
8.    Watch the inner grumblings (“I should be doing more…”). Do not engage.

Why “belonging”? Because PAUSE brings you back to yourself. Belonging begins by belonging to you. From there, you are more useful to others, your team, and your world.

Speaking of belonging and PACE, Sunday I took Melissa Kee (IHRP - MP) and Kee Hong from #OmniSuperConnectors into Thomson Nature Park to Pause. We moved at the pace #Nature invited. Air that comforted our lungs. Birds, wind, and footsteps forming a small symphony. This is belonging to something bigger.

What did Nature give back? 
𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦. 𝘕𝘰𝘯-𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭. 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵. 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨.

We even saw a shy, rare Raffles Banded Langur high in the canopy, Long-tailed Macaques leaping joyfully, and the first time for me, a wild boar sprinting across the path.
