The Navy Seals only use 3 questions to review missions.

Their breakthrough (& how it will radically improve your performance): 

AARs review projects, missions, training exercises or any other event you want to reflect on.

There’s a world of difference between an effective AAR and a post-mortem bitch session.

The magic is in the phrasing of the questions.

I adopted AARs for my portfolio of companies years ago, and they’ve been incredibly helpful.

Here’s how we do them:

Step 1: What Went Well

We begin every AAR by asking this question:

“What replicable new learning did we gain from what went well?”

In any post-mortem, our brains can naturally focus on what went wrong. 

However, it is critical to get clear on what went RIGHT so the good can be repeated.

Step 2: What Didn’t Go Well

After reviewing what went well and the successes we can repeat in the future, we move on to constructive criticism.

We frame the discussion with a similar question:

“What replicable new learning did we gain from what did not go well?”

Notice - the question isn’t asking what went wrong... specifically what is the new LESSON we can incorporate for the future.

Step 3: New Standards

Once we’ve dissected the lessons from what went well and what didn’t, we turn 
our focus to the future.

Combining the insights from the first two steps, we assess the following:

“Drawing upon questions 1 and 2, what changes can we make to our processes to systematically improve our consistent tactical excellence?”

This reinforces that the standard is excellence, clear process is how we get there, and asks what improvements to our process move us ahead?

Process note - each participant should complete these questions in writing 24 hours in advance.

AAR sessions begin with reading all of the written feedback.

Then the meeting owner leads the discussion of each question.

That’s an AAR process at a high level.

1. What went well (to be repeated)
2. What lessons exist from what didn’t go well
3. How we’ll modify our processes going forward (with excellence as the standard)

So, you’re in an “OK” shape - How to Get in Great Shape Once and for All 🎯

I think it’s important to touch on what that “OK SHAPE” means for most guys in the first place:

	• You’re not fat, but also not lean enough to look toned, especially abs.

	• You’re doing some sort of training, weights, and a bit of cardio.

	• You like your arms and maybe shoulders, generally feel good with a bit of size, but your waistline and lower abs are stubborn fat areas.

	• You like balance - watch what you eat but like to indulge on occasion. 

	• You healthy, feel fit for your age but not athletic or agile and start to lose flexibility. 


IT ALL SOUNDS OK for an average guy.. 

But you are not exactly satisfied and SHOULDN’T BE‼️ - You are right on the line between being just above average or in peak condition of your life.

And all the while, you’re achieving professional milestones and juggling an incredibly busy and stressful life.

That’s something to be admired for. That’s 1% achievement on a physical and mental level.

Here’s your 4️⃣ STEP BLUEPRINT:

📍PHASE 1: Base Building (Weeks 1-4)

	•	Nutritional Overhaul: Shift to a whole foods-based diet. Cut down on processed foods, excessive fat & sugar.
	•	Consistent Training: Mix of cardiovascular exercises (running, cycling, swimming) 3 times a week and strength training 3 times a week.
	•	Hydration and Sleep

📍PHASE 2: Intensity Increase (Weeks 5-16)

	•	Advance Your Training: Increse intensity to boost your metabolism. Increase weights and complexity in strength training.
	•	Mindful Eating: Start tracking your calorie intake to ensure caloric deficit for fat loss. Increase Protein for muscle building. Consider strategies to improve insulin sensitivity.
	•	Recevery: Incorporate one day of stretching, daily mobility for flexibility. Focus on quality sleep.

📍PHASE 3: Specialization and Plateau Breaking (Weeks 16-20)

	•	Target Weaknesses: Identify any weak or lagging areas & incorporate specific exercises to strengthen and improve them
	•	Nutritional Adjustment: Based on progress, adjust your macros ratios to fine-tune fat loss or muscle gain. Experiment for energy optimization.
	•	Mental Resilience: Challenge yourself with tougher workouts. Practice mental toughness exercises like cold showers or breathing techniques to enhance discipline.

📍PHASE 4: Sustainability and Lifestyle Integration (Beyond Week 20)

	•	Fitness as a Lifestyle: Make your fitness routine adaptable to your lifestyle to keep the routine enjoyable and sustainable.
	•	Eat for Life: Transition to higher calories that you can maintain long-term without fear of gaining back fat.
	•	Continuous Goal Setting: Whether they’re related to strength, endurance, flexibility or overall health. Do not get stagnant.

When should you BULK to put on MUSCLE 🏋️‍♂️ that is if you’re 35+ & fitness is only HOBBY, not your life ?

Ahh..The grand old question of when to bulk.

Realistically, from an expert point of view, 99% of guys SHOULDN’T even consider this ‼️

It might be the brutal truth, but most men are not in any position to get fatter for the sake of  “gaining muscle”. 

There’s a big risk here.

You’re not 20 anymore, life, responsibilities, metabolism..

So getting into a bulk, you might never come out. 

Taking advice from a PED enhanced influencer coach, or even worse, a bodybuilder, is a sure way to keep you on their online coaching program for the next 3 years 💵

Clever, isn’t it?

Here are THE REAL options you have, based on your current body composition:

1️⃣ THE ELITE FEW who’ve managed to keep a physique that is LEAN & already IN SHAPE.

Your body fat is low, your abs are out, and you’re sitting pretty at 12-15% body fat. You are in the prime position to bulk up because your body is like a sponge, ready to soak up all the gains. 

Still, bulking isn’t an excuse to eat like you’ve just discovered the buffet. It’s about a strategic caloric surplus, an extra 200-500 calories, aiming for 0.5-1lb bi-weekly with training intensity at all high.

2️⃣ THE SKINNY FAT who’s not exactly out of shape but looks SOFT and has little MUSCLE DEFINITION.

Diving into a bulk will only make you a bigger version of your current self, a fatter version to be precise. The goal isn’t to fill out your frame with any kind of weight but to first focus on leaning out. 

Your body fat needs to drop to a healthy range to create a “clean canvas”. Use a slight calorie deficit and maybe the addition of cardio. Once your abs are popping, start a controlled bulk.

3️⃣ THE HEAVYWEIGHT GUYS that risk never coming out of the bulk.

If you are starting a bit heavier, aiming for a BODY RECOMP is, well, dreaming. 
By all means, lift weights, get stronger, but DON’T BULK. Your body is full of energy stores that are overflowing.

If you put on body fat easily will have a very hard time not only drastically cutting to get lean but also being able to sustain it. 

You need to approach your journey in phases - FAT LOSS ➡️ MAINTENANCE ➡️ SURPLUS. The exception is where you carry significant muscle mass already, then a fat loss & reverse from low calories will deliver you great results alone.

I’m almost certain that most guys have NO desire to look like an immobile and cardiovascularly unfit bodybuilder. Why would anybody who values health want that ⁉️

If your goal is to look fit, athletic, maybe like Cristiano Ronaldo or just a little bit bigger, QUIT the idea of bulking completely. Just get leaner and MAN-GAIN, 1% better every day.

You SHOULDN’T do fitness like a bodybuilder to feel healthy and athletic - Longevity vs Vanity at 40 🎯

What comes to your mind when you think of Health & Wellness, Superior Quality of Life, or even Mental Clarity for everyday performance in life?

Who do you know that is able to achieve a healthy lifestyle, professional excellence, and overall life balance that inspires and motivates you?

I honestly don’t see an issue with having purely aesthetic goals as a starting point for guys who have let themselves go and lost all their confidence as a result.
If your motivation is currently low, fast visual changes can be incredibly encouraging to keep going.

That initial stage is great to drop some weight, restart resistance training, and force yourself into a more disciplined and routine-based lifestyle.

But…

There has to come a time, better sooner than later, when your training and nutrition become sustainable and NOT disruptive to your family and professional life.

That is where your body becomes a BYPRODUCT of eating tasty, enjoyable yet healthy food, and when you train to strengthen and bulletproof your body so it remains agile, flexible, and able for the next 30, 40 years.

Your fitness strategy has to transform into a long-term approach from which you rip consistent benefits, grater than just muscle size, like:

✅Better health markers to remove fear of diabetes, coronary disease & high blood pressure

✅ Optimal hormonal health

✅ Improved cognitive functions, focus and mood

✅ Unrestricted flexible and pain-free body that moves well and is able to play sports

✅Increased fitness levels for your cardiovascular health

There’s a reason why so many (to be precise - 9 out of 10 people will gain weight back within 18 months or less) get initial dramatic “Before and After” results but CAN’T KEEP THEIR RESULTS after - It’s extreme sacrifices, restrictive diet & lifestyle which makes it possible to only carry on so long… till it’s impossible and you’re falling off track, binging and potentially suffer mentally. 

That’s how the bodybuilding mindset works, based on:
“How much do you want it”
“Adapting your life to your strict diet and training”.
“It’s a lonely journey that nobody else understands”.

Remember, you’re not a bodybuilder and your fitness journey has to fit into YOUR life not the other way around ‼️

I’d question if the bodybuilding lifestyle you might feel tempted to recreate has anything to do with actual Fitness & Health & Mental Wellbeing.

Also, what might LOOK good on the outside can often be EXTREMELY UNWELL from the inside.

So make choices that will benefit you long-term and preserve your ability to live a long, active, and healthy life.
