Before I stepped into the working world, I battled mythical creatures and traversed countless MMORPGs. My favourite was World of Warcraft. It taught me about grit, coordination and entrepreneurship long before I got my first paycheck. 40 people across timezones, coming together for a single purpose. Still gets my blood pumping just thinking about it. My proudest moment came when our group of traders successfully monopolised the in-game market. I hit the max in-game currency, wallet literally couldn’t hold anymore! My first full-time job came after an internship at the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL). I incubated there for over 2 years as a full-time developer and part-time pantry raider. I kept things light, real and respectful, which helped me connect easily across the office. Surrounded by supportive mentors and dad/mum vibe colleagues, I helped build the first CPD platform which served 1,200 lawyers. Subsequently I landed in Singapore Medical Association (SMA). I still remember my pitch when asked to justify my salary: “I am worth it.” It was a brand new role, with no manual to follow. I had to build up the IT department from rubbles of POP3 servers, CRT monitors and PC workgroups. The job scope was far broader and deeper than expected, but with my tribe behind me, I pressed on. In a non-profit, I was trained to be “well rounded”. Belly aside, this meant working across departments and dabbling in everything. My boss call me “The Facilitator.” Three websites, two payment gateways, one learning management system, a B2B procurement system and countless support pings later… there’s still more to do. I believe opportunities are made, not given. If I see a gap, I’ll try to fill it. Generative AI complements that mindset perfectly. It’s helped me break boundaries and evolved once more. Lately, I’ve been working closely with cybersecurity experts to support medical practitioners with Health Information Bill compliance.
