AI won’t replace lawyers. But lawyers who can prompt like pros will replace those who can’t. Microsoft and the Singapore Academy of Law just released a 30+ page guide on using GenAI in legal practice. No fluff. Just real tactics. Here are 10 prompt engineering ideas every lawyer should steal: 1. Start with your goal. Don’t be vague. Don’t be polite. Be specific and direct. Bad: “Can you help with this?” Better: “Summarize the key differences between Clause X and Clause Y.” 2. Give context like a case brief. Specify the jurisdiction. Mention the relevant parties. Include any legal constraints or frameworks. The more legal context you feed into the prompt, the more relevant (and accurate) the output becomes. 3. Set the tone, format, and audience. Is this for internal review? A senior partner? A corporate client? Be explicit: “Draft a formal email summarizing this judgment for a client in the finance industry.” or “Bullet-point key risks from this MSA for a partner’s review.” 4. Use reference materials precisely. Don’t dump in the whole 80-page contract. Reference specific clauses. Example: “Refer only to Clause 7.2 of the NDA. Focus on indemnity obligations.” Precision in → precision out. 5. Break big tasks into prompt chains. One prompt won’t cut it. Break the work into stages. Think like a legal workflow: Draft clause → Review clause → Compare clause to precedent. 6. Think like a litigator, prompt like a strategist. Example: “Compare the plaintiff’s affidavit with the statement of claim. List any inconsistencies in a table with paragraph references.” That’s not prompting. That’s briefing your AI like it’s a junior associate. 7. Always review the output. Always. AI is confident, not always correct. But you are still liable for every word it writes. Treat GenAI as a starting point but not a final answer. 8. Use chain-of-thought prompts for deeper reasoning. Want your AI to show its working? Say so. “Explain your reasoning step by step.” or “List the key considerations before suggesting amendments.” 9. Redact and protect client data. Never feed confidential or identifiable information into a public AI model. Use enterprise-grade tools with strong governance, compliance, and data security controls. The ethics bar hasn’t moved—it’s just higher now. 10. Save what works. Create your prompt playbook. Find a prompt that nails contract analysis? Save it. Refine it. Reuse it.
