I’m a counseling psychologist and writer based out of Hisar, Haryana. Over the last 6 years, I have been working to make mental health easier to understand for laypeople through lectures, seminars, videos, and articles. 

Having fought clinical depression and suicidality during my teenage years, I try to put more emphasis on men’s mental health to help people and men understand what issues they face and how they can be overcome. 

I also enjoy explaining topics related to stats and research. I believe psychologists, before everything else, are scientists and should be well-versed in the scientific method. My aim is to take the fear of stats and research out of psychology students and replace it with confidence and applicable skills.

Yesterday, we lost Sudhir Kakar.

I was first introduced to his work at AUD. Two things stood out for me. First, he analysed Indian society in a way I simply had not seen from other psychologists in the country. Secondly, while I did not understand everything he wrote, every once in a while, I would read a sentence that made me pause and think for a while. 

If you are a psychology student/practitioner/enthusiast in India, I would strongly recommend reading some of his works. The best way to remember a writer is to read them.

Working on Men's Mental Health | Making Research Fun | MA Psychology

Today was a special day. I got the highest honour a student can get from their alma mater. My school invited me to be a chief guest for the annual prize distribution ceremony. 

While celebrating the students' achievements, I encouraged them to aim, not for perfection, but to be good enough. The same goes for parents and teachers. Aiming for perfection, in everything, at all times, is unrealistic. Being good enough and being consistent is much better. 

Gratitude to the people at O.P. Jindal Modern School who gave me this honour. 

Something that keeps me humble in life. The horizon of what I don't even know I don't know will always be orders of magnitude larger than what I know. There's always something more to learn. 

I read a paper a few months back where the researchers compared scores on two different scales and when there were no significant differences between the two, they claimed both the scales were "practically the same". That's not how it works.

No statistical differences

Something I have learned from doing a lot of seminars on men's mental health: The actual conversations happen after the seminar is over and the audience has dispersed. 

Some people stay back, they want to talk to you personally because they are not sure about sharing it in front of everyone else. The same happens in the support groups I do as well. 

The real heart-to-heart conversations happen after the seminar. The part before that is just a very elaborate trust-building exercise. It is a kind of trust that needs to be cherished and protected. 

Have been reading this brilliant, thought-provoking and super-concise paper on the challenges Psychology faces in becoming a science and what can be done to put it on a stronger footing. 

The paper is open access and I strongly encourage psych students, whether Bachelors or Masters, to give it a read. 

For the longest time, I have wished to meet the psychiatrists and psychologists who were treating me back in 2016. At the same time, it has made me question if they would want to meet a former patient.

A majority of my treatment for severe clinical depression in 2016 was at a private setup in Bengaluru. Honestly, I was not a very "good" client. I rarely cooperated but the professionals there still kept going. I still wonder where they are. 

Every time I visit Bengaluru, I plan to visit the place and maybe show the professionals the kind of effect they can have but the plan never comes to fruition. 

Maybe somewhere, I am also a bit apprehensive of visiting the place again. 

As a professional, how do you feel about being visited by former clients/patients? 

(Fun fact: I am connected with a lot of professionals working in the setup currently but I never gathered the courage to tell them I was treated there 🙈)

He will probably get a few media interviews where he will feign ignorance. 
"We did not anticipate this kind of reaction"
"We didn't choose our words correctly"
"We were just trying to be encouraging"

But let's be clear about what this is. Rage-bait. Say something so outrageous that everyone calls you out and gets you free publicity. This time at the cost of a minor. Blocking out her name and that of the company cause no one needs to know either. 

In times like this I wish there were legal repercussions for rage-baiting but they will get away with it. And do something outrageous again in 6-7 months. 

My first attempt at teaching research and stats was 2 years back in a course. I can say it now, but I was not very good at it back then - both marketing and teaching. 

My foundational concepts weren't quite clear either and I got confused if I didn't prepare before each lecture. Naturally, this course didn't do very well. 

The 18 months since have involved a lot of self-teaching and foundational work. The workshops I do today focus on building strong foundations instead of completing the topics to discuss. 

Strong foundations in research and stats can make the most complex topics seem easy. That's what my focus is today. (I am still bad at marketing though, pls help 😭)

Every once in a while, before an interview or a date, I will ask my friends for some last-minute tips and they say, "Just be yourself". 

The next two minutes are spent trying to control the urge to explain them how difficult that is. 

When an idea reaches popular culture, the idea gets moulded and shaped into something very different. Sometimes, the new form of the idea may not bear any resemblance to the original one. That's what I think happens with red/green flag ideas as well.

It is quite easy to encourage people to talk but there's a lot of context the phrase misses out on. What do you think?


Let's Talk about Talking

What started as 3 very basic workshops in 2023 is now a collection of 5 workshops building the concepts of research and stats in Psychology from the ground up. The fact that students are trying to learn, trying to become better and not settling for mediocrity is an encouraging sign.

Framing Effect

I am not sure if my voice will change your mind much but it is my responsibility to say it: Please vote. 

A lot of sacrifices were made by the generations that came before us to ensure that we get the right to vote and that the right is kept safe. It's up to us to exercise it. 

Check if your name is in the electoral list of your constituency, ensure your Voter ID is handy, know when your constituency will be polling. Even if there is some heat or some rain, I think it is worth enduring that to ensure your voice is heard in the electoral process.

One of the most eye-opening things I learnt about stats and statistical methods is that nothing is set in stone. Statistics is not like the axioms of geometry where everything is fixed. Take the concept of "level of significance" for example. It can be interpreted in so many different ways. Here are three of the most common ones.

If there is a social media platform, I can assure you there are some conflict entrepreneurs playing with the 'algorithm' to maximize views. The best we can do is try to disengage whenever possible.
