I’m a counseling psychologist and writer based out of Hisar, Haryana. Over the last 6 years, I have been working to make mental health easier to understand for laypeople through lectures, seminars, videos, and articles. 

Having fought clinical depression and suicidality during my teenage years, I try to put more emphasis on men’s mental health to help people and men understand what issues they face and how they can be overcome. 

I also enjoy explaining topics related to stats and research. I believe psychologists, before everything else, are scientists and should be well-versed in the scientific method. My aim is to take the fear of stats and research out of psychology students and replace it with confidence and applicable skills.

Some things I am surprised psych students don't know but they should 👇🏼

:- Ivan Pavlov tortured his dogs in order to conduct his experiments on them. This involved brutal surgeries and poor conditions for the dogs and cats he worked on. Unsurprisingly, a dog cannot tell you when it is salivating or when it is hungry

:- Albert Bandura's Bobo Doll experiment was a quantitative, controlled, lab experiment, not a qualitiative study which depended purely on observation. I did a poll on my Instagram a few months ago. Only 20% seem to know this. His design was quite elegant, which is why it got the fame it did. 

:- Harry Harlow conducted his studies on monkeys, including infant monkeys. This included some gruesome techniques to induce depression in them. He came under so much criticism that it contributed to the animal rights movement in the US. 

We learn about most of this stuff in the Intro to Psych books but forget that those are just intro books. They aren't all there is to psychology. They will give you an overview. Digging into the depths is your choice!

Working on Men's Mental Health | Making Research Fun | MA Psychology | GATE XH-C5, 2024

From when I first got an intimation for this, I thought this would turn out to be a scam but apparently not. I recently got included in the 30 under 30 list by Global Governance Initiative in the healthcare sector. It is still a bit unreal to think about. 

Don't think this could have been possible without the constant support and helpful feedback from the community we have here :)

The YesMadam email reminds me of parents who tell encourage their child to share their problems with them. Ask them to be honest. Offer a sense of security to the child. But the moment the child says something, the same parents lash out at the kid for 'misbehaving'. 

Trust with HRs is already at an all time low. These actions willl only make it worse.

Visited a bookstore yesterday and observed two interesting things: 

:- There were separate Psychology and Self-help sections. It's not usual but I am glad to see they were separate. Most books in the psychology section were self-help books only though, but at least the spirit is right. 

: - More importantly, the Science section was actually full of books about the domain topics of Psychology: memory, intelligence, gendered brain, learning, behavioural economics, neuroscience etc etc. 

That got me thinking. The things people are most curious about are from the domain of the mind or psychology. Yet, the field of psychology doesn't find itself at the forefront of such conversations. It finds itself limited to the realm of clinical psychology/self-help.

Why could that be? What can be done to change that?

The death of Atul Subhash is a disheartening issue. I am not surprised that some influencers are trying to capitalize with rage bait on this. Here's how you can identify rage bait:

1. Makes you experience anger, frustration, outrage. 

As the name suggests, rage-bait will make you angry. Social media algorithms are made to maximize engagement. Nothing engages people more than anger. I fell for it too during the YesMadam PR thing. 

2. Wilfully misses the conversation to deflect to a tangent:

If, for once, the conversation is centered around men's mental health or ingrained biases in our legal/judicial systems, some will completely bypass that issue to talk about something else. (Remember how infuriating the "not all men" phrase is?)

These are sensitive times. Some will try to play with your emotions for their own gain. I recommend trying to have conversations with those close to you. Try to understand their perspective. Help them understand yours. Build bridges. 

It's a bliss to be understood by someone else. It's peaceful to talk to someone who isn't trying to misunderstand you all the time. Seek peace and understanding. Not rage.

I wish I could tell you that the ordeal Atul Subhash experienced was an exception but its not. The phrases he used, the experiences he shared, I have come across them many times in support groups, in online conversations and occasionally in therapy sessions too. 

There are loads of thoughts I have, and there is a lot to be said, but for now I hope there can be some semblance of justice for him. If our justice system itself laughs in the face of injustice, why would anyone trust it?

Here are some simple tips to make your dissertation journey easier (Masters/Bachelors) 👇🏼

- When reaching out to participants, keep your messages short and sweet. Informed consent can be a part of the form itself but outreach needs to be easy to read and share

- Use tools like Zotero to build your bibliography side by side. You will not be able to find the papers once again later

- Have a statistical analysis plan ready before you have collected your data. if you think of it later, you will want to analyse whatever gets you a positive result. That's p-hacking

- Null results are not a bad thing. They are results as well. You don't need to "change" your data for a significant result (can't believe I have to say this)

Anything else you would like to add?

While we are discussing how male victims are treated by our judicial system, here is an example from just 2 weeks ago. POCSO is a gender neutral act but a case can be halted because the judge is too shocked that a boy can be a victim too. 

As per govt. data from 2007, majority (52.9%) of CSA victims are boys. Do you think it is possible they will get justice or a fair hearing if this is how they are approached?

EDIT: As Eesha Peshawaria has added more context, the hearing was paused because of the gender of the accused, not the victim.

I have recently switched from a manual to an automatic transmission car. Sometimes, I try to hit the clutch which isn't there, or end up trying to shift gears which don't need to be changed. This a matter of habits. With practice, these habits will go away and new habits will take their place. 

At this point, do you realize how stupid it would be if my co-passenger was constantly telling me, "Just don't hit the clutch" or "There is no gear to change, you are thinking too much". I know all these things, it's a matter of how I can overcome these habits. 

We similarly have habitual thoughts as well and with the right practice, they can be changed too but to say "just don't do it" helps no one. Simply because of how shallow the advice is.

It helps to know that a bad day is inescapable just as a great day is inevitable. Probability determines so.

Emotions and the NPC

Have been reading about the history of modern Psychology recently and it is quite funny to see how many similar attitudes continue to exist in our practice today too. 

"The more [psychologists] sounded like doctors, the more willing the public was to accord them similar status" 

This was in response to below par quality intelligence tests flooding the market in the US in the early 1920s. How much do we still chase similar status today?

Since at least the 1990s, research has moved away from terming a non-significant result as "accepting the null hypothesis". John Tukey in these regards, said that,

"The worst, i.e., most dangerous, feature of ‘accepting the null hypothesis’ is the giving up of explicit uncertainty … Mathematics can sometimes be put in such black-and-white terms, but our knowledge or belief about the external world never can."

Even then, it is surprising to see how many researches in Psychology, especially those produced in India, often end up with concluding that the "null hypothesis was accepted due to non-significant results". 

In some cases, I see teachers and supervisors specifically instructing students to "accept" their null hypotheses. If your supervisor is instructing you to do so, you can refer to the following:

- John W. Tukey, The Philosophy of Multiple Comparisons, Statist. Sci. 6 (1) 100 - 116, February, 1991.
- David C. Howell, Sampling Distributions and Hypothesis Testing in Statistical Methods for Psychology, 7th ed, Chapter 4

The more appropriate conclusion for such null results would be "failing to reject" or "retaining" the null

Psychotherapist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry

Last week, the American Psychiatric Association updated their practice guidelines for #borderline personality disorder. A few highlights:

1. No psychotherapy is the "gold standard" for #BPD, and three psychodynamically-informed therapies were included as evidence-based treatments: Kernberg's transference-focused psychotherapy, Fonagy's mentalization-based therapy, and Gunderson's Good Psychiatric Management.

2. There is no evidence to support the use of pharmacotherapy for BPD. Psychotropic medication treatment of BPD should be time-limited.

3. Early detection and diagnosis of BPD is key to good long-term outcomes. Clinicians should not withhold diagnosis of BPD when the patient meets criteria for it.

Given that the YesMadam email is now looking like a marketing stunt, the post which called them out by Anushka Dutta has been deleted. Last I checked, it had >4k reactions and >100 reposts. How does it effect your decision to avail their services?
