The LinkedIn News team today was nominated for an Emmy for our Catalyst video series: https://lnkd.in/eHDn25wd. Here's the backstory...

This was the first series that Courtney Chapman Coupe crafted when she joined the team from CNN. From Day 1, Courtney had a vision for what would resonate with members: She was looking for a thread that runs through all of our working lives, a universal idea that could be told best through video. 

What she and the team landed on was the concept of setbacks and what we learn from them. She nailed it. I can't think of one person I've interviewed, managed, or been managed by who wasn't changed by some workplace setback that then then helped them see their purpose or path in a new way.

Courtney wanted to bottle that concept and her team came up with Catalyst, which involves members talking direct-to-camera about the moment when everything changed for them —  the firing, the critique, the loss of funding, even the jail time — and how they turned those setbacks into success. Getting people to tell those tales hasn't been easy, but our bookers and producers have taken the time to make sure subjects appreciate why sharing these moments is so critical and them eased them through the creative process.

The short videos that come out of that care are beautiful; even better are the incredible conversations they spark. 

We've launched a lot since the creation of Catalyst, but it still is the beating heart of the team. And I'm thrilled the judges behind the Emmys, which are the creative industry's highest honor for craft and content, noticed.

I'm thrilled I can now start applying the adjective "Emmy-nominated" to them all...

I often get asked my thoughts on AI as it relates to the creator economy. On a recent panel, I joked that I’m “just waiting for a hotter, cooler AI version of myself to replace me so I can retire.” While this felt absurd coming out of my mouth in that moment, the more I read up on AI, the more realistic this “joke” becomes. This past week I stumbled upon a fascinating Business Insider article (linked in the comments below) that does a great job of weighing the current pros and cons of using AI to develop content. While I’m sure these feelings will change dramatically as AI advances in the coming months/years, here are some of my fears, hopes, and thoughts on utilizing AI as a content creator:

My fears:
1. Lights, Camera, Action…or not: I was recently visiting a friend in Miami and walked by a street that was filming a car chase scene for the new Bad Boys movie. The entire street was blocked off and we got to witness stunt drivers risk their lives to nearly collide (but of course get out of it at the last minute) over and over again. I was completely entranced watching this, but couldn’t help but think about the insanely high budget that it takes to make scenes like this - closing down busy streets and crews of 100+ people. With the technology we have now, will these in-person productions even get funding in the future? While I likely won’t be casted in the next action-packed drama, being on set is quite literally one of my biggest joys in life. It's such a unique environment, and I can’t imagine a world where this industry doesn’t exist!

2. Deep Fakes: You've likely seen examples in the past few months of how AI can take advantage of name and likeness data to create deep fakes - my personal obsession is the deep fake account of Tom Cruise on TikTok (@deeptomcruise for those interested). Of course I’m concerned at the possibility of my digital persona to be hijacked - especially with how much Corporate Natalie content exists online.

What excites me:
1. Contract Reviews: My biggest pain point as a creator is reviewing and redlining contracts. It’s a fairly repeatable process in many ways, but does require reading & digesting 10-30 page documents weekly. I’ve met with a handful of founders trying to tackle this administrative burden through AI, and I’m hopeful for innovations to come!

2. Content Ideation: I love to use chatGPT as a supplementary tool when it comes to ideating content. If you follow me, most of you have seen my Gen Z feedback videos. When scripting this series, I often turn to AI to help generate Gen Z lingo ideas to get the ball rolling. My hope is that I can continue to use available tools as a compliment to my current creative process, not necessarily a replacement.

What are your thoughts on AI as it relates to content creation and creativity in general?


I’m heading back to London after a couple of wonderful days in Dublin. This trip was a great reminder of the value of in-person meetings — sometimes, you really do need to hash things out face-to-face or have a good whiteboarding session.  

And while I have many learnings and takeaways from my visit, the main thing I want to share with you all is just pictures from the LinkedIn Dublin office because OMG. 😍

We have an exciting six-month News Editor opportunity to work with our North American Daily News team here at LinkedIn. The role will be either hybrid based out of our NYC, DC or SF offices, or fully remote — but the candidate must be based in the US. 

We’re looking for a highly motivated journalist with exceptional news judgment to help curate our coverage of news and grow the conversations around them. The ideal candidate is a business news junkie who is also a strong, fast and accurate editor with a knack for writing compelling headlines and news blurbs.  

The role involves discovering and writing a mix of breaking news and trending stories, with a strong emphasis on essential news and stories related to the workplace that provide unique information and insight to our members.

Another important element of the job is time management — you should be tech savvy, able to juggle multiple projects and deadlines at once and help LinkedIn users find and understand the best and most timely coverage of major news events. You should also be able to take complex information and communicate it clearly, concisely and accurately without relying on technical or corporate jargon. 

As well as being cool under pressure and able to energize and guide other team members amid the daily news deluge, you may also be asked to help curate video content both produced by LinkedIn and outside contributors.  

This is a full time, 40 hour per week role. The LI news team operates on a seven day roster, so there will be also some weekend work involved.

I started writing this article back in January, after seeing a few pieces floating around talking about the end of the "golden age" of social media. Some recent conversations inspired me to revive it and finally hit publish.

My main thought: Yes, the Internet is not what it was in 2012. Yes, that's a tough adjustment for some of us (hi, Millennials!) who've been around a while. But social media will carry on, and humans will still figure out how to build community in digital spaces — because building community is what we do.

Yesterday, the LinkedIn London office was treated to a delightful talk between John Williamson and lexicographer, author and media personality Susie Dent. Susie is an inspiration to all word nerds; even if you don't watch her on TV, you've probably encountered some of her posts/tweets sharing fantastic old words that feel remarkably suited to modern life. (My favorite example: hurkle-durkling, which the kids today call "bed rotting".) 

I find shifts in language and communication fascinating. (I wrote a while back (https://lnkd.in/gZDccBjM) about gifs becoming "cringe" for Gen Z; gifs and emojis particularly interest me because they take on meaning outside of their explicit definitions or forms.) One thing Susie mentioned is her effort to bring back "lost positives" — words like "feckful", "ept" or "ruthful" that have been lost to history but complete the pair to what linguists call "orphaned negatives". Psychological research has shown that having the words to label specific emotions can allow people to express or manage them more effectively, and part of Susie's mission with lost positives is to put more of those, well, positive emotions out into the world. 

This effort also answers the very profound question: "I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?" It turns out, you can — and not just in Europe.

One of things we pride ourselves on at MIDiA is helping the marketplace peer over the horizon with disruptive, forward-looking ideas and vision. We have a long track record of doing this. While many of these ideas were difficult to swallow, or a little ‘out there’ at the time of writing, they became (or are still becoming) a good reflection of where markets ended up heading. Well, it is now time for another of those big market shaping ideas: bifurcation theory.
 
🚥The indicators on the disruption dashboard are flashing red. AI is, of course, standing centre stage, but it is not the cause, instead simply a change enabler.

🎧The causal factors this time round are all direct byproducts of today’s music business, unintended consequences of the streaming market. The fracture points of today’s business are the catalysts for tomorrow’s 
 
📻Streaming was once the future but now it is the establishment. It has rocketed from lean forward niche to lean back mainstream. Streaming is the modern day music business’ radio

💡Now, there needs to be something more, built alongside, not instead of, streaming. This is the dynamic behind bifurcation theory. 

📱In fact, the music business is already bifurcating between consumption (streaming) and social (fandom and creation). This will become the demarcation of tomorrow’s business:
 
1.   LISTEN (user-led): streaming services, monetising consumption at scale
2.   PLAY (creator-led): highly social destinations where fans lean in to create, connect and express identity
 
⚡️PLAY will evolve as a self-contained set of ecosystems, built around the artist-fan relationship. Meanwhile, mainstream streaming will become even more lean back, and social and new apps will exert what will increasingly look like a stranglehold on fandom and the creator economy.
 
🤖AI will play a key role in the future of both sides of the bifurcated music business, but rather than beingtomorrow’s business, it will act as an accelerant for the underlying dynamics of bifurcation theory.

Hot take: I hate this idea. Understanding whether someone is on the same page about urgency is important, but it's hard enough being a jobseeker these days without being put through tests you don't know are tests. I do appreciate that the recruiter in this piece uses the late-night text as as a way to understand if someone is a REALLY good fit, rather than as something punitive (it's not an automatic "no" if you don't answer quickly). But there are two sides to a job search — the candidate has to feel good about the company, too, and that means transparency in the hiring process is important.
