When’s the right time to start freelancing?

I often get this question from people stuck in jobs who want to break out.

Here’s the truth:
There’s no perfect time. But there are two schools of thought:

1. Start now.
If you don’t have major responsibilities on your shoulders, sometimes the best way to learn is to remove the safety net.
When I left corporate and started freelancing, I had no clients, no network. Just a lot of free time (and a lot of stress). But having no option forced me to figure things out fast.

2. Start later.
If you’ve got people relying on you, or you want a smoother ride, save 3–6 months of expenses and line up at least a few consistent clients first.
This way, you’re not waking up every day in panic mode, and you can build
your business with a bit more breathing room.

Neither option is wrong. It’s about knowing yourself.
Are you motivated by urgency—or by security?

The only real mistake is waiting for “the perfect time.” That doesn’t exist.

If freelancing is what you want, start preparing today. Whether that means building savings, getting clients, or just burning the boats, just don’t stay stuck.

I wasn’t lazy these past 2 weeks.
I was rebuilding energy for the next phase.

I didn’t post.
Didn’t create much.
Didn’t do anything “publicly productive.”

But I was working, just not in the usual way.

After weeks of constant editing, client calls, and deadlines, I hit pause.
Went on a few long bike rides with friends.
Slept more.
Thought more.

And for the first time in a while, I didn’t feel guilty about it.

Because I realized something simple
“Work” isn’t just about output.
It’s also about recovery.

You can’t pour creativity out of an empty tank.
And sometimes the smartest thing you can do for your business…
is take a break before you need one.

If you’ve been running non-stop, maybe this is your sign to slow down before burnout forces you to.
