Twenty one years ago and just a week before Christmas, I had my design career pulled out from underneath me. With no warning, after refusing to work another 14-hour day, I was immediately let go. Before that, I worked myself to the bone as a young, ambitious designer. I was moving quickly up the agency ladder, putting in the long hours, often working weekends, and basically burning myself out. At the time I thought I was doing it all to advance my career, but in a slow economy, it eventually became a necessity to just hold onto my job. After losing it that night, I had an important realization. I realized that all of that hard work, all those extra hours, all of it had only been benefiting someone else's vision and someone else's bottom line. And that the bottom line for me was that I was, in their eyes, expendable. I knew that no matter where I worked, this would never really change. So that night, I decided never to let that happen to me again. I decided I would never work that hard or give my all for anyone else but myself and my own vision ever again. I decided to be my own boss and to do it by becoming a full-time freelancer. That was when something interesting happened. I discovered I could dictate my schedule while earning much more in less time. I matched my salary in the first year, but in nearly half the hours it took me as a full-time employee. In just a few years, I doubled my income. All working remotely on my terms and in far less time than my full-time counterparts. I discovered a new life of freedom. A life free from: → Office politics. → Grinding hours. → Pay restrictions. → Limited time off. → Company layoffs. → Controlling bosses. → Corporate restraints. But most of all, I found a life that paid me in the most valuable way of all…time. Now I'm a Certified Professional Coach.
