LarsLabs is a hardware start-up located in Munich that specializes in building intelligent IoT sensors for Industry 4.0. It was founded in September 2018 by Lars-Gerd Piwkowski and Dirk Lohmann. Our first product is the RangerSensor Suite.

The RangerSensor Suite is a group of IoT Sensors intended for use in industry 4.0, smart data, and predictive analytics. These sensors allow for the evaluation of environmental data, movement, orientation, and indoor and outdoor localization with precise accuracy. Additionally, they provide a connection to the cloud and integrate with blockchain. Our system is unique in its focus on flexibility, security, and scalability when compared to other IoT systems available.

OVAL Digital, Inc.

OVAL Digital Inc. is a IoT start up I co-founded as technology partner, developed and engineered an intelligent multifunction Sensor called OVAL. It detects changes in motion, acceleration, light, moisture, temperature and proximity. When the sensor gets triggered or activated it sends a notification message within a couple of seconds to the user using push, email, text message or direct telephone call notifications.

I engineered the complete hardware and software up to a full functional prototype out of the founder's initial vision. The small sensor is powered by an exchangeable coin cell battery and runs internally on a RF baseband SoC from Texas Instruments using the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The internal sensors are interrupt triggered in case of an threshold exception and wake up the SoC instantly up on an alarm event. An internal buzzer and light indicator raise awareness in case of alarm events. The circuit board is a compact, impedance controlled four layer design with a highly optimized PCB Antenna at a +3.3dBm in gain. A maximum power output of +4.5dBm (2,8mW) and a receiver sensibility of -97dBm allows coverage of high distances and guarantees full functionality in rugged and RF noisy environments.

Up to hundreds of sensors can coexist in one home network and communicate using a AES-256 encryption through a gateway with the internet. The gateway development was also part of my design.

For proof-of-concept and feasibility I also engineered and developed a complete functional mobile App based on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript enabling real-time data interaction between the user and the sensors.

In 2014 Oval Inc. ran successfully a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo and raised nearly US$50K within three month. Business development, marketing and product execution is managed by the initial founder. Oval might be available soon.

InterConsulting Srl Italy

Responsible for complete hardware design, from technical 
specification to conceptional stage, schematics design, 
PCB design with signal integrity, hardware debug, design 
verification, testing and documentation. Based on high-reliable 
requirements with military specifications, I developed mainly 
custom specific boards with integration in existing COTS 
hardware to a complete system design. Racked systems, 
based on VME and VPX bus with interconnection to ADC, 
DAC and complex FPGA and DSP systems.

Development of a complex, modular control and protection 
system for industrial and naval applications. The modular 
system was based on two controller boards interfacing with 
10 boards over a fibra-optic link connection. 

Development of a test target simulation system for a sonar 
application with hardware interface on VME bus structure, A/D 
and D/A conversion, digital signal and data processing 
implementing Virtex-5 FPGA and free scale’s MPC8641D 
processor allowing signal generation..

My design was based on a 6U VME card that received the 
digitized analog signal, passed the data to a Spartan FPGA 
for data pre-processing/signal conditioning and transmitted the 
data over a FPDP connection to a Virtex-5 FPGA. The 
integration of a 32bit VME bus interface was part of my 
design. This card was realized on a 12 multi-layer PCB.

Development for a test-equipment system implementing a 
XMC header card and a VPX 3U CPU processor, FPGA 
controlled with PCIe 2.5Gb interconnection, LeCroy/Tektronix 
probing footprint, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0. The design 
used a wide range of analog and digital video interfaces, like 
250MHz RGB and 1.2Gb DVI signal processing. This design 
was based on a 10 multi-layer PCB. The interconnection 
between the cards is realized by 1.25 Gb/s PCIe lanes, USB 
2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet communication.
