I JUST had a sales call with a 20-year-old company's founder who said the words every marketer dreams of hearing:


“I want to slow down and build the foundation before we scale.”

A legacy brand.
Doing millions.
Working with national names.

Still humble enough to say:
“Our message isn’t clear, and it’s holding us back.”

THIS IS THE PART NOBODY TALKS ABOUT.

Your brand doesn’t outgrow the need for clarity.
You don’t “age out” of strategy.
And you’re never too established for a refresh that actually matches the level you operate at.

→ Even the companies who’ve made it hit a point where people don’t understand what they do anymore.

 → Even the brands with decades of proof start losing opportunities because the story hasn’t evolved with the business.

 → Even the strongest referral engines eventually stall if the foundation isn’t built to scale.

Legacy is not a strategy.
Adaptation is.

The companies who are willing to pause, re-evaluate, and rebuild the base: are the ones who stay relevant instead of becoming a “remember when” brand.

In honor of founders everywhere just trying to do their jobs without losing their minds… here are some REALLY FREAKING WEIRD things that have been said to me over the last 5 years of owning a business:


1. “You’re too young to have an office space.” (A relative. At Christmas. With the confidence of someone who’s never paid rent.)

2. “You becoming a mom has made you more intense.” (Oh, you mean the boundaries? Yeah. Those.)

3. “Do you really think this business will sustain you?” (Honestly, at the time I also didn’t know. But why would you say that out loud lololol.)

4. “A beanie is not a hat. Look it up in the dictionary.” (An employee. Attempting to lawyer their way out of our no-hat rule. In a Zoom meeting.)

5. “Will you and your team be willing to work for commission only?” (Said three months into a six-month contract. Reader… we were not.)

6. “Please accept this plant and box of chocolates as an apology for ripping apart your expertise AND your proposal. Will you still work with me?”
(To this day, I still have no words. Except maybe: ‘The plant died.’)

You know what I did when people said this stuff?

Mostly smiled, nodded, and internally cringed/cried.

Because at the time I thought:

 – That’s just how business is.
 – Being young = automatic imposter syndrome.
 – Saying nothing is the “professional” thing to do.

Except the beanie situation. That got a write-up LOL.

Maybe just maybe the real lesson is this:

Running a business gives you the confidence to stop entertaining nonsense, start charging for your time, and say “no” faster than Outlook loads on... any given day.

This afternoon 4-year-old hit me with:


“Grown-ups don’t play. They work.”

Which is… honestly the most savage feedback I’ve received all month.

Guess I’ll be rewriting my OKRs to include:

 → Build category-defining brands
 → Remember how to play
 → Touch grass. Literally.

BRB, scheduling mandatory “play time” into my Google Calendar just to prove a point. 

HA. That’ll show HER!!!!

The biggest marketing problem I’m seeing lately isn’t lack of content.


It’s founders and teams drowning in too many things to do, and no idea what should come first.

They're trying to decide where to focus when... absolutely everything feels important.

Here’s why this process wrecks people:

→ Too many moving parts
→ No clear starting point
→ Decision fatigue (aka “if I make one more choice today I will SPONTANEOUSLY combust”)
→ And the big one: no real plan for resources

So one might... put this off for *months* because it feels impossible to find the time or headspace to untangle it.

We’ve helped four brands through this exact mess in the last six months—including a legacy client whose new marketing director was drowning in 47 competing priorities.

We outlined what worked, what didn’t, and what we’d do if we could.

Together, we followed it step by step.

And this past October: highest revenue month in their entire history.

So here’s the process, the one we actually use, because I want more of you to stop building in an echo chamber:

1️⃣ Do your research (for real).
Talk to customers, partners, vendors, even internal team members.
You cannot prioritize anything without understanding what actually drives revenue, retention, and relevance.

2️⃣ Build messaging straight from that research.
This is where uniqueness is created; not in a brainstorm and not in a tagline workshop.

Messaging grounded in truth gives you a clear picture.
A clear picture gives you direction.
Direction gives you focus.

3️⃣ Develop a strategy that starts simple.
There is nothing more overwhelming (or expensive) than burning everything down to start from zero.

99% of the time, you do not need a rebuild.
You need to optimize the one or two things already working…

Then layer.
Then scale.

This is the unsexy work that creates category leaders.
THIS is the stuff you don’t see on social, but you absolutely feel in the results.

If you’re stuck in priority paralysis right now, I promise you that you're not alone, and your brain is definitely not broken.

You just need a starting point that isn’t built on panic (or analysis paralysis).

Most brands don’t need bigger discounts.
They need bigger TASTE.

2025 Black Friday winners SO FAR are =

⭐ creators who know exactly what their people want (Karrie Locher)
⭐ founder emails that feel like texts (De Soi / Scout Brisson)
⭐ experiences people actually want to interact with (poppi's site, right now)
⭐ a free gift that feels intentional (Primally Pure)
⭐ brands that know when to sit it out

Black Friday used to reward volume.

Now it rewards creativity.

Our inboxes and SMS notifications are feral at this point. Most people are shopping practically... and mostly from the brands they already love.

When it comes to promos (especially ending this year and going into 2026) the question is NOT: “How much do we discount?”

It’s identifying “What’s the one thing our loyalists would actually be excited to see right now?”

Not me thinking I’m so cool this Monday morning… until I realized 90% of my unread texts are brands screaming CYBER MONDAY at me.


The SMS marketers doing a good job though (AKA I blacked out and swiped my CC):

👉 Use emojis like a second language
👉 Put the % OFF in the first 10 words so it hits the preview
👉 Make you feel like an insider, not a target

If you’re going to text your audience…
Make it worth the ping.
