I saw someone (aka Rebecca Taylor) say recently that their use of the salute emoji 🫡 came across as… aggressive???

HUH???

Friends, I fear I am deeply unserious. Because I use it as
“got it”
“on it”
“acknowledged, respectfully”
“heard you, no notes”
"aye aye captain"
"okie dokey smokey pokey"

And when I don't use that, I use a custom thumbs-up-Michelle-Tanner-"YouGotItDude" emoji. Because of course I do.

Apparently some people read it as:
– passive-aggressive (jokes on you i'm just passive and scared, hold me)
– sarcastic
– militaristic???

Which is wild because in my head it’s giving:
I am a small, earnest person trying my best.

This feels like another reminder that half of work communication now lives in tone interpretation.

Same words.
Same emoji.
Completely different read depending on who’s on the other side.

Anyway I'm Lauren and I'm out here doing my darndest as a millennial who simply must emoji reply to everything.

Some days it’s hard to hold pride and grief in the same body.

The same day we launched something I’ve worked hard on, something awful happened in the world. And I felt this quiet, nauseating disconnect. Like I was supposed to be excited and grateful and energized, and instead I just felt… small.

This post is a departure from my normal style of posting, so feel free to click away. But I wanted to take a moment, after reflecting all weekend, to name the thing.

It doesn’t escape me that this story is getting attention in a way so many others never have. 

That violence against Black people and people of color has been happening for centuries without this level of outrage or visibility. 

I knew that before. I cared before. I was angry before.

But if I’m being honest, now I’m also afraid in a way that feels closer to my skin. 

As a white woman. As a mother. As someone who has spent years learning how to move through the world carefully. Keys between fingers. Eyes up. Smile so you don’t escalate. Don’t poke the bear.

Motherhood complicates everything. 

I’m trying to stay present for my kids. To notice the milestones. The learning. The ordinary joy. And I feel guilty for that joy, knowing there are parents who don’t get to have it. Parents whose children didn’t come home. Children whose parents didn't come home.

A friend recently described “the void” as something that feeds on our fear and rage. That when we scream into it, it grows louder, more chaotic. I don’t know if that’s true. But I do know I’m exhausted from being angry. And tired of being scared.

Logging on to work on product messaging and launches and marketing plans feels absurd in moments like this. But it’s also part of choosing to stay here. 

To keep building. To keep caring. To keep noticing.

I don’t have a lesson. I don’t have a clean ending.

I’m just trying to hold all of it at once.

Saw a journo request for comment looking for a male CFO for a career Q&A.

The angle:

Ah yes. Finally. A voice we never hear from.

Anyway, I have a 3x CFO for you. She’s led companies, scaled teams, and somehow managed to not be vanilla about any of it.

Guarantee you’d get a more interesting interview.
And actual diversity.

I’m Lauren, and I’m tired of pretending this isn’t ridiculous.

New year, same PO'd me at the state of the workplace. Case in point:

A journalist posted that they have to call their boss to prove they’re sick and use a PTO day.

Calling your boss while sick like it’s a middle school attendance line… and still burning a PTO day? Absolutely not.

It’s wild how some workplaces are still operating on:
If I can’t hear your voice, you’re not actually sick
Rest is suspicious
You must suffer and pay for it

Also… journalists, of all people? In a profession built on autonomy, deadlines, and adults doing their jobs without being babysat? Be serious.

If someone is well enough to call their boss to “prove” they’re sick, they’re well enough to just not be micromanaged.

And if they’re not well enough to call? Congrats, the policy just punished the people who are actually sick.

This is why people aren’t “lazy” or “uncommitted.”
They’re tired of policies that assume bad intent and call it culture.

I just read U.S. News’ 2026 Best Jobs report and laughed when I saw where HR landed. Ohhhh boy.

I’m just... curious... who these rankings are really built for.

According to the article, the methodology rewards things like stability, balance, predictability. lol ok. 

Meanwhile, HR has become the place orgs route their dumpster fires.

Layoffs. 
Policy whiplash. 
Legal exposure. 
Culture breakdowns. 
AI anxiety. 
Leadership indecision.

That reality doesn’t show up neatly in a ranking.

AND THEN there's the student survey attached to the report. Mentorship and full-time opportunity top the list. Important goals!
 
...And increasingly ones HR teams are expected to deliver while being under-resourced and treated as overhead instead of infrastructure. Eek

So yes, HR Manager made the “Best Business Jobs” list. NUMBER 5!!!

But best job for who, girl?

I finally peeped at my ChatGPT 2025 Year in Review and apparently my award is:

“Most Likely to Turn a Soap Purchase into a TED Talk.”

Which feels… unnecessarily accurate. :(

I’ll set out to do one small, normal, human task. And somehow I come back with a story about capitalism, community, working parents, employee benefits, and why we’re all a little tired.

I don’t mean to do it.
It just… happens.

Small moments turn into big feelings (daily).
Big feelings turn into observations (i have a lot to say).
Observations turn into content (i be writin).
Content turns into me processing life publicly on LinkedIn (who needs a diary).

Anyway.
