After years of cultivating methods to keep my joy of teaching alive amid daily demands and perfectionistic tendencies, the pandemic hit. Following distance learning, back on campus I witnessed low morale, pervasive exhaustion, and an exodus of burned out new and established teachers. Shadowed with unmetabolized trauma ourselves, educators, school counselors, administrators, and district officials have been facing distressing student and parent behaviors, lack of public support, and the task of closing academic gaps while addressing grave social and emotional needs of students. I fear that, if no action is taken, our educational system will collapse. Teachers are quitting to find less stressful jobs. New professionals are not attracted to the field. Administrators and district officials have no place in a hierarchy where the foundation is crumbling. If we don’t take action, what kind of future can we offer our children? Now is the time for reflection and innovation. We are trying to return our educational system to normal. Let’s be honest. The current challenges we face shatter norms. We need new, powerful solutions. I’m on a mission to guide districts composed of open-minded, forward-thinking people who understand that healing begins in each individual classroom, to a better present and future. I’m on a mission to help kids by serving their teachers who are supported by districts that set themselves apart from the rest.
