As a hobby outside my postdoc appointment, I collaborate with a team of Physicists and computer scientists with an aim to build the next gen, HFT-friendly Financial Derivatives Exchange. My role is a code developer and the API designer at the C++ end. Specifically,
I built a C++17 *Asynchronous SDK with callback that connect with Bitwyre's REST API. Currently I'm implementing a couple of trading bots (sync, async).

I never follow anybody from Google. A company hires 80% no degrees folks.
I am NOT saying qualifications are essential to tech. But, I personally found people with degrees less likely to throw nonsense irrigated your gut :]

Please, young people, stay in school enough before thinking about a job. This society needs more humble, reliable, hard working and honest individuals rather than bogus tech social media influencers know nil besides selling.

Why? I'm in the mood for Java now. Follow a few influencer genZ Java-ish. Their thoughts decently upset my gut ...
For programming, respect only those who teach or mentor you from school. NOT social media sites or YouTube. 
What to follow? I follow my gut to find what I like to eat. Banana 🍌 bread and yogurts at home :)

Arch Linux is retiring. Mirrors from Australia appeared to die for over 3 years.
I'm retiring this beloved ancient manjaro arch linux for a new windows machine. Hopefully in a couple of days.
Windows is great for almost everything, except IT :]
And for server, I will never credit windows. 
The biggest advantage of Windows is accessibility to everyone. To be a master it takes a few months. Unlike linux, one only know it if one start living with it from a kid age. All operating systems got their own competitive advantages. I like being a user of all three. 
My washing machine has retired too after many years of service since 2015 while I was living in Armidale for my PhD. No plan for replacement. (too expensive. I could have bought a new i10 desktop again.)
I'm very used to washing own cloths from a young age. I dislike getting parents to wash my things since a kid. It is tiring every morning, but the process of cleaning, washing can be quite rewarding too. (addiction to water, possibly)

Last night I was coding Java until 2am. Javadoc in IntelliJ reminds me fighting C++ with Clion. The proximity of Java to C++ is a lot more than any other programming languages.
After multiple comparison, my view stays: the best programming language to study computer science in university is Java. With python, unfortunately, one won't appreciate what software engineering and architecture really mean to one's life and how one climb stairs as a developer junior.

Weekends are way precious to us to fix all things. Tons of things.
I love ancient computers as it has got all ports needed without buying all kinds of costly adapters or special cables.
We need people who got the right heads to design all our computer hardware without everybody paying a lot more for the less utility level.
I hate almost every modern design. They are suited to rich genZ who don't wish to think about ways to look after their own technological assets.

I did not get to finish my assignment but won't sleep early tonight.
Tomorrow I got a tooth surgery so I will work from home from the afternoon. Wish me luck not crying dead.

Women are much better Java programmers. Male programmers are over-confidant, enjoy boasting, women don't, but just act straight in. 
The more one think one knows the more likely one knows nothing^
Of course, in physically demanding industries, men always win, trade skills (e.g.)

Expressions in Python are way irregular compared to classical programming languages. Check for instance, list comprehension. Mastery of Python can take you as a Data analyst rather than developer.

Father visited me since I had an operation.
He left today with minor anger.
I feel sad. I can't talk much due to post surgery requirements, moving my face muscle too much delay the healing and require revisiting dentist. Father did not understand, he told me he took out 5 teeth but still Okay with everything. He turned upset spending time with me. My dream is to make enough income to have my parents living in the best scenario. Would that come true one day? My biggest concern is the communication. I have been living separated from parents since age 16. I do not have anyone I care more than myself except my father who I frequently fight against on lots of matters. Dad is a humble and pragmatic person, and as 68 yrs old he look like a 45 on the street.
I failed to communicate Chinese in a satisfactory way relative to father. At this age, it is very hard to re-learn a language even it was my mother tongue.
I wish father have a very safe flight back to Sydney and train to Kiama.

Networking is a invisible pre-requisite to a genuine cyber pro.

I never agree with it. I prefer to keep my posts with plenty of typos.

Do not make crappy apps like me..:\
Designing the right layout takes plenty of cares.
A successful prototype leads to thousands other apps.
Otherwise, everything expects to fail.
Not a joke, I've never understood well how design works in software engineering til I spent decent amount time with Java and C#. 
C# WPF has the advantage that one can modify the xaml which consequently update the business logic in code.
In C++, there were too many other complexity caused a loss of focus what was important. In Python, no way one can design an app given everything has been apriori encapsulated and simplified. Python is for scripting and maths, not so much for software development. My view only, apology any offences to the python only folks. I reserve it for automation and system scripting. Not large scale application development.

It has been a long day. I highly appreciated the cooperation of everyone in the team! I seem to foot in every app  while my primary should reserve to *oversee all development workflow.
IT admin can be handled by a dedicated year 10 leaver but gladly I prefer it to dealing with the complexity of my main role. Joke -- just need more bandwidth.
But really, who can we trust ? The best is to pick things as observed 

I got somebody pretending to be Juliana, and logged a suspicious DNS registry request to Damstra :(

I hope I can sort out all the admin stuff. Make use of our old server, resume dinosaur warehouse infrastructure planning, development and deployment. 
Our old physical server could be a handy friend at the stage of prototyping. It should not be retired.

Very thankful to the cooperation of the team. I'm sure everyone knows I'm not the IT support specialist. But more of a data warehouse admin. But yes, 90% time spent on various subtle IT admin matters.

When can I get to write code for the role? hopefully after the establishment of infrastructure for the dinasour.




when I was a grad student up until my early 30s, I tend to stay in Uni lab til midnight. My teachers saw me and commanded me "go home"...I did not listen.
My dinner were often filled up with energy drink, pies, donuts or muffins :(
I just did not like my home even it was very clean and comfortable than anywhere else. 
 
It brought in a series of health bottlenecks I don't realise until now.
Be kind to yourself, from a young age. Stay at home, cook yourselves more often :) #selfcare

I vote for physical server for computations for variety reason. Not because I'm still a fan of traditional networking.
Not a fan of Cloud adoption for massive parallel computations.
Why? Just like why I prefer OSS solution to commercial solution (linux vs windows for instance)
In-premise server is awesome!

- 24/7 access without calling your IT supports
- Highly flexible: Physical servers provide complete control and customizability over hardware and infrastructure
- Security: Physical servers live inside premise, does not rely on internet - scam free :)
- Never spend over quota
For business not intending to scale massively, serverless solution isn't helpful.

I enjoy drawing with codes rather than manipulating PowerPoint like objects in paid tools drawing software engineering diagrams. Neither canvas, visual paradigm, figma, Lucid charts are free if you want usual development ambience.

My PhD plays no roles in any of my industry work post-postdoc.
However, I appreciate all my advisors from heart ! Most advisors (I got 6) are pure mathematicians have never stepped out the academic sphere. But I highly admire their intelligence and diligence. It explained my 6 years journey pursuing a maths PhD. Advisors do not remember me as a student. I remember them all.
